BREAKING: USS Porter collides with Japanese-owned tanker near Strait of Hormuz!

i would be totally gutted if i was in the US navy. That is one badass ship and now its out of action for a very long time.

On CNN now too!
No one was injured thankfully!

How people manage to collide two ships?

Especially with a tanker. They are not that tiny. Tanker was operating under Panamanian flag.

SFGATE states that the collision left a gaping hole in the starboard side of USS Porter.

Last collison in the straits happened 3 years ago.

Three years ago, The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered submarine based in Groton, Conn., collided in the Strait with the USS New Orleans, a San Diego-based amphibious ship.

With all the advanced radar and sonar technologies, not to mention the proximity sensors...how in God's name does a destroyer collide with a tanker ?

This is the 21 century guys, there are a shitload of electronics and all sorts of measures to prevent this kind of thing from occurring...either the crew on the bridge was asleep or drunk or something is very fishy here !

It's actually a very crowded pair of shipping lanes and oil tankers cannot turn on a dime.

True! Wouldn't make sense for the warship to make the turn though? WTF happened there.

lol It is an Arleigh Burke class destroyer we have 70 of these nothing to worry about limey!!!. Unlike the queen's fleet we have plenty of ships to go around.

I'm taking a guess here so don't anyone get mad at me if I'm wrong. The tankers Japanese, the Japanese have been how shall we say "a bit reluctant to go along with the US lead oil embargo."

I'd not be all that surprised if it was carrying Iranian crude and the USA was sending a message.

Also historically the Japanese owe the US a pay back for the oil, scrap iron and other embargo's that they placed on Japan prior to WWII.

Well that's a relief, but still it's sad that the US loses a destroyer before the war even began !

It's a good theory for me, Japanese want out of US influence for some time now.

Let's just say I'm somewhat of a Navy expert and I know these Arleigh Burke-class destroyer well and I know about Navy procedures.

I'm dumbfounded by this incident (refuse to call it accident) this class of ships are very maneuverable and while going thru the straits due to how busy the channel is they would of had observers on deck.

So what's your theory on the situation? I recall seeing a post that you said you were in the navy (i think), so your opinion is valuable and appreciated.

Tanker was bound for UAE port of Fujairah from Mesaieed in Qatar, according to ship tracking websites.
So maybe has no connection with Iranian oil.
