Saddly, orphanages and abandonment have always been the last instruments of the desperate parent. Ergo - the story of the Infant Moses among many others..

Prior to and during the Great Depression, my grandmother was raised on a small farm owned by her aunt, with nine of her cousins and a brother. The kids had all been sent there to be raised by the one family member that had the means to keep a roof over their heads. Young offspring, especially those too young to work were routinely sent to live with any family member that had the means to afford them when doom was imminent. Those that didn't have that resource, often turned to orphanages and abandonment.

Sorry OP, but Greeks don't abandon their kids in Greece. Family is and always have been sacred here and works very different from your typical western family with completely different values. People abandoning their kids are immigrants and the photo you showing as a Greek kid on the street is clear as day that is a gypsy, place is full of these gypsy kids today in all squares and public transportation spots begging for some change. I'm not saying that is not a shame for these kids to be abandoned by the parents and all that, it's very sad indeed, just want to correct the propaganda here.
