The athletes do not compete for the medals, they compete to be the best, to push themselves to the limits of their potential. Sure, they want the gold medal, not for the actual gold, but for the recognition of being the worlds best at their sport. It has nothing to do with $ for the athletes, it's about competition and dedication.

I know two families over the years who have had a child on an olympic team, and they received almost nothing except in the very last year

families and athletes work their asses off, get up at 4 in the morning to train, to drive to training, to drive days away for coashing, they spend every dime, and they manage to do it with almost no federal support

most of the funding comes from the family and sometimes local organizations

there are athletes of every color and background at this latest olympics, and many of them are deep in debt in order to get their chance at the gold

why can't you be happy for them?

I'm proud of these kids, happy they achieved their dream, glad that years of training and hard work paid off

Why shouldn't they celebrate? Some of them have trained over 10 years for this moment, and they achieved it.

I donate to several children's charities. Once a month, our shop donates all of the profit for that day to a local charity. I do not personally have the means to purchase and deliver food wide scale. With what was spent on the Olympics, hundreds of thousands of kids could be fed.

Our nation is "slightly" smaller than the USA and there are "slightly" less people living here.

If you're not a brainwashed slave (which I doubt), you could compare the USA with the EU, in terms of population. The EU wins more medals than the USA.
