Welcome to Rocinha, the biggest "favela" in Rio de Janeiro! Let's take a tour? |
Rocinha Tour User ID: 21870854 Brazil 08/13/2012 08:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Welcome to Rocinha, the biggest "favela" in Rio de Janeiro! Let's take a tour? Olá.
Only 6% of the Brazilian population lives in favelas. 94% of Brazilians don't live in favelas.
In the city of Rio de Janeiro, one of the most "favelized" cities in Brasil, about 18% of the population (less than one fifth) lives in favelas.
Among all the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, the biggest one, and most famous, is called Rocinha.
Rocinha now is totally free from the old "drug lords". The government forces "occupied" the favela several months ago, and expelled the former powerful drug gangs.
Let's take a tour inside Rocinha?
The videos bellow will show you a glimpse of life inside Rio's biggest favela.
Yeah, it's in Portuguese, with no subtitles. But the images tell a lot.
I guess many people will be surprised...
Remember all the scenes show the life inside Rio's biggest favela! |

Those videos are very interesting: a TV crew from Rede Record, Brazil's second largest TV network, rented a place in Rocinha (as shown in the first video), and spent a whole week actually living in Rocinha.
They made reports about every day life in the community.
Very good work! |

A real favela is made of cardboard and wood shacks, hanging on a hill. These are a minority, thank God. |

Quoting: saturnino "A real favela is made of cardboard and wood shacks, hanging on a hill"?? Then we have almost no "real favelas" in Brazil anymore!!! "Favela" means any community that originated from homes that were built mostly illegaly, in occupied land. "Cardoard slums" are almost non-existent in Brazil for at least 15 years... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21798384 Not true. Favelas won't be "cleaned out". A few small favelas may be removed, only when necessary to build infrastructure for the Olympics. But 99% of the favelas won't be removed. The favelas that were controlled by drug lords are being "liberated" by government forces, one by one. Rocinha was liberated already. No more drug lords with AK-47. |
