The campaigners identified the boat as one of the four French Triomphant-class that usually carry nuclear weapons. They say this is the first time a nuclear-armed French submarine has been seen visiting the Clyde.

The first of the class, Le Triomphant, collided with the British submarine, HMS Vanguard, which carries Trident nuclear missiles, three years ago. The accident happened somewhere in the Atlantic, but details have been kept secret for national security reasons.

An informed opinion appreciated. But they better find another place to base cause apparently the Clyde doesn't want them there.

No it means that the deal to share nuclear defence is going ahead.. even though I was hoping Hollande would burn that treaty.

No idea where they would want/plan to base them, But am sure with the referendum looming that the French would not consider Scotland the best place, at least until that is settled one way or other.

For me, the joint military treaty points only in one direction, giving the EU nuclear teeth through France and the UK.. I guess it has to start somewhere,

and no I don't like the idea, nothing wrong with the French, just to much distrust on both sides for it to really work.

Foreign naval vessels visit the U.S. all the time, including nuclear powered ones.

Wow, if the British public freak out about a known and trusted allied sub coming to a port of theirs, they would have immediate heart failure if they knew about the Russian subs prowling around all the time just a few miles offshore......

This is a sore point for me regarding some of our allies and our treaties:

Some of our allies make a big song and dance about how anti-nuke they are *cough* Canada *cough*, but they're in defensive alliances that require American, British, and/or French nuke forces to come to their aid, if necessary. They have their cake and eat it,too.

They don't appreciate foreign subs LURKING in or near U.S. Atlantic, Pacific, or Gulf of Mexico coasts. Big difference.

American, French, Russian, who gives a shit. All types of military shipping has stopped over in the UK over the years, many carrying nuclear weapons. Our ships do exactly the same in foreign ports to re-fuel or stock up with provisions.
