I just got back from dollar store. Spent $90 and got nothing but coffee, pizza mix, cheese, milk, and a few cleaning supplies.

I feel very sorry for a family of four trying to feed their family. Luckily, I raised my children during the 90's when food, gas, and salaries were reasonable.

I, also, feel sorry for my adult children trying to survive in today's economy.
 Quoting: Renegade (Me too)

You named 7 items at the dollar store for 90 dollars?? You should have purchased 90 items for 90 dollars unless it's one of those FAKE dollar stores like Dollar General which is NO WAY a dollar store but are building a pile more of them all over US due to a perfectly fraudulent name!!!
 Quoting: ****SUPERFLY****

I can easily purchase food for four people for that much per week. The poster should have been able to purchase those items for a third of what s/he spent. It would be nice if they posted exactly what she got and the price and even the area. I find it unbelievable such items would cost that much unless this person lives on an island.

Shit, I paid $2.20 for 3.6 oz of ground black pepper atthe Dollar General today. Why cuz the Save alot was 2.45 and the Food Lion was higher and so is Wally World and the Lowes foods store. All of them are higher.
But I got a great deal on a nice pork roast. I got a nice one for $3.81 and it was 3.715 lbs. @.99.lb! Not bad. they had more but I needed to get some other stuff.

They had 5 lbs of white or red potatoes for $1.97 each so I grabbed some of them.

I purchased 14 ounces of Badia black pepper at Food Lion for less than 6 bucks. Look into that brand next time. It is near the Mexican food and not with the regular spices. I believe most stores carry this brand.

Hundred-Year Forecast: Drought

BY many measurements, this summer’s drought is one for the record books. But so was last year’s drought in the South Central states. And it has been only a decade since an extreme five-year drought hit the American West. Widespread annual droughts, once a rare calamity, have become more frequent and are set to become the “new normal.”

The current disaster map

Maybe if all you fucks weren't dead bent on eating meat, we could use the resources for growing vegetables.

Producing meat, especially how we do it in America, is a fucking joke.

Care about health insurance? Why don't you get to the root of the problem. It's the way you eat.

This drought outta teach you a thing or two about starvation.

Meat is good for a person. It provides b-12 and other nutrients. It is the over consumption of meat that is a problem. Higher meat prices will curb that though and hopefully stop overeating. People with emotional eating issues will have to find something else go after.

We are fortunate in southern Calif that there are 99c stores and Dollar Tree where we can get such items still for a buck, and also at the health foods store they have items in bulk, including spices, so you can get what you want for a good price. I used to see pepper for 50c at Walmart, along with other common spices. Or, every time you go to a Wendy's, grab a few extra packets.

Haven't noticed price changes, Yet. Probably will soon...

I just keep track of gas & oil.

If i somehow for some reason see something will post from Southern California.

Cool, thanks. I am already seeing prices creeping up in Canada. Eggs alone are easily $3 for a cheap dozen. I am also noticing a big rise in pre-packaged foods as well. Tuna is like 3.79 for some cans. The cheapest no-name cans are like 1.99 now. You NEVER see tuna on for 99c anymore. Very rare.

Many other examples, but the rise in prices is basically everything. It's more like 20c here, 10c there, another 10c, then another 5c. I remember Old El Paso Burrito kits were 3.79 quite a while back. Now as much at 5.99. Insane.
 Quoting: JayJ

Yet, I just discovered a new product at Trader Joes, cubed Albacore tuna. Frozen, but it's sashimi-style, not processed. You can thaw it and pretend you're in a Japanese restaurant.

$4.00 per pound.

If you want the larger tuna steak pieces it's $8.00 per pound or more. But I don't need that for my purpose.

There usually seem to be bargains out there, but you gotta keep shopping and finding the new bargains as the old ones get expensive.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19852008

Be careful with tuna, especially albacore, since it is LOADED with mercury.

Just because it's at a store labelled the "dollar store" doesn't make it CHEAPER.

In fact, they already know you'll THINK it's cheaper, so you will buy it anyway. I like how all you tards think you can outsmart the corporation that OWNS your fucking asses.

Things you're buying at the dollar store are coming in smaller ounce containers and/or are factory-defective from the get-go. 2-ply toilet paper is 2 half-ply sheets now, yet you're shopping out of CONVENIENCE and as long as you're doing that, you will always get fucked (not that there are too many choices to begin with).

If it's "convenient," you can bet your ass you're paying for it.

And 90 dollars isn't hard when you're buying pre-cooked garbage. Try fixing a HOMEMADE meal instead of relying on Kraft foods to fill your stomach.

SHEEP.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15044657

If you know what things should cost in the first place then dollar stores aren't that bad. You have to know what you are buying. If you go shopping and have no idea then you are a sheep.

I use to keep a price book so I have a good idea now. That is what people need to do. When you go shopping jot down what you are paying for things in pounds and ounces. Keep the book with you and soon you will know a bargain no matter what type of store you shop in. Keep a small calculator with you. You can get one for a buck. If you only just keep track of what you buy when you get home from your receipt you will be ahead. Just keep track.

Re: EMERGENCY G20 meeting likely over SOARING FOOD PRICES!! This is getting SERIOUS...Already seeing prices RISE!!
its insane. i was at the grocery store yesterday, i spent 200 dollars on stuff that would normally cost me only 100 dollars. its a 50% increase and we didnt even get the whole amount for two weeks... pissed me off and the hubby was like "whatever". we have 3 kids, one of whom is still eating formula but we only get 600 dollars in assistance. when groceries cost 200 dollars or more for two weeks not including formula which is another 100 dollars, were living off of top ramen and oatmeal for the last week of the month. at least i have had the foresight to start buying staples instead of processed foods which helps alot. i cook alot more stuff from scratch than i ever did in an effort to eat healthier but when produce and staples are through the roof alot of people are going to get mad and start taking it out on authorities.

I find potatoes go a long way in feeding people cheaply. But yeh it would get broing eatng potato curry everyday.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1647266

I am making potato soup tonight with cheese, broccoli, onions and celery. I have some left over meat I'll throw in as well. I'll probably top it with some sour cream and a meal is made. Sometimes I oven fry potatoes and top with sauteed onions, cheese and sour cream. I make my own potato chips as well with a mandolin to slice them thin. I love potatoes.

OK we're all going to just eat less....it's the only way. I for one could loose a few pounds. I'm 5'3" about 127. I look better At 120. Hungry folks can load up on veggies like carrots, last I checked they were still pretty cheap. Same with celery, tastes good with homade hummus. Folks agree or think I need a tinfoil hat? I love that saying....
 Quoting: ruser 2275761

My kids get three meals a day since they are still growing but I only eat one snack and one meal a day. I am female and not extremely active(I walk a few miles a week) with no health problems so it is doable.

I drink some lemon with honey in the morning and have a hard boiled egg with some V8 juice for lunch. I eat whatever I want for dinner and add in a desert if I want it. I have lost at least a pound a week so far. I am not heavy but just want to slim down some. It might take a while to get use to eating less but it gets much easier. At least cut your portions down at first.

I know my stomach has shrunk because it is impossible to gorge myself at dinner anymore. This is the way I use to eat when I was young and my body really seems to like it. I just make sure to eat nutritious foods now and rarely eat any 'junk' food. I am making most of my desserts as well.

I feel better and our grocery bill is better as well. Hubby is only eating 2 meals a day but then he works out a few times a week and is more active than I am.

We both take a vitamin/mineral supplement as well. Even if you are eating a lot of food a supplement is still needed since our foods aren't as nutritious as they used to be.

The food prices don't have to be a curse. It might actually help people's health in the long run.

Yeah, it looks like we are all going to have to "trim the fat", if food prices do skyrocket to unfordable levels.

Even I have cut back a fair bit, and I now look twice as hard for deals and sale items.

The only thing I use the Dollar store for is cleaning supplies and paper products (TP, paper towels, ect..)
Everything else that most of them sell are no cheaper than your average supermarket or Walmart.

the only answer is population reduction ...

its as simple as that , everyone on benfits or food stamps should be incinerated period
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21874701

Oh you are so Right Genius, and being that the majority on benefits and food stamps are mothers and children caring foe those sperm donor-raping dicks who will NOT take care of their sperm ejacs...leaving the mothers and children in poverty while OTHER tax payers pay for the Entitlement of males having their two second squirt...

We should burn them and by golly we should find the sperm projectile and

BURN THAT TOO... EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM

Question is,

Should we burn those entitled to squirt and dump fetus on society to raise while connected to thus rest of sperm squirted...

Or

Should we just cut it off and burn it that way...and save room for other burning materials?

You decide5a

Or... you could always ask the woman why she pretended to take birth control when she was not in 90% of those cases ...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18216274

Birth control pills FAIL. Always wear a condom with BC pills. And always wear a condom if you don't want kids. Two forms of birth control are needed. Even then babies have been conceived. Best to not have sex with a woman unless you could see marrying her and having kids with her but to many that is just old fashioned.

I could get pasta for 99c a pack here a year ago. Buck seventy nine today. Unreal.
 Quoting: Buck Zander

I saw pasta at the Dollar Tree for of course a dollar. Don't know how you feel about not eating name brands but it might be something you look in to. Sometimes they have name brands though. Just know what you should be paying for things and you won't be paying more.

It's nature's way... gotta cull the useless eaters from time to time. It's not like people in the turd world contribute much to the advancement of anything anyway.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14778597

People in the Third World are the people who feed your fat lard ass.

Majority of them are still rural and they are still producing food, for their own and for people in the West.

sorry but the USA is still is the worlds breadbasket
what we buy from those third world countries is out of season tasties which we shouldnt (im a permaculturist)
but the fact is the USA has a huge food calory surplus
we can live without a banana in December
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21914255

true alot of countries third world rely on usa, those third world countries used to grow their own food but now they grow biofuel crops. Australia is in a very lucky position because we still grow our own food and we dont rely on usa for anything
