Quoting: Wash It'd never happen... the ice might all disappear, the ice caps are only there during an ice age, like what we are in now. ice ages don't last forever, which means that all that ice WILL MELT. it is fantasy to think that we can stop the ice age from ending. |

This^^^ Last month they told us we were going into a mini ice age...they don't have a clue...but gotta say something to stay funded I guess. Well, actually, we may see a significant global cooling sometime in the near future due to multiple factors. [link to wattsupwiththat.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 21915172 Germany 08/13/2012 10:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | artic ice reflects up to 90 percent of sunlight hence heat back into space...... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21504964 ...when it melts the dark ocean absorbs that sunlight and retains the heat...... So the more the ice melts the more ocean surface exposed to absorb the heat.........it continues and accelerates in the process known as a positive feedback. The loss of ice also allows for escaping methane hydrates to be exposed into the atmosphere.........which are very volatile greenhouse gases.........again the more methane that is released from the ocean/artic the more the atmosphere heats up and the more the ice melts and more ocean surface is exposed.................you get the idea by now............a series of positive feedbacks that increase global heating to the climate. The question is how much of it is manmade fossil fuel burning and are we or will we reach a point where nothing can no longer be done to reverse the effect..........a runaway process.......... That is difficult to assess because there are so many factors involved with global climate...... But the best minds dedicated to trying to understand all this aren't too optimistic as to what has happened and what is going on now...... And when the ocean water is warmer more water vaporizes, createing more clouds lessen sunlight, increasing rain and snowfall, rain and snowfall in the arctic lower seawater saltination, wich lowers freezeing point of water wich causes the icecaps to grow. Damn u can find hundreds of theories, nobody can accuratly predict what happens. Also as allready stated more CO2 in the atmosphere makes plant life prosper wich makes it easier for trees to grow creating more oxygen. Everything moves in cycles like we are now at the end of an iceage. Damn at the time the dinosaurs lived there was no ice at poles at all and there have been times where earth allmost complete was coverd with ice and only small zones on the Aquator where ice free. Also the Oxygen concentration changed alot back when dinosaurs lived it was like 50% higher wich made it possible to let em grow so much and made insects possible that where larger then birds are nowdays. All we realy know is we dont know what is going to happen, everything is just models wich are possible. Hell Meterologists can´t even predict the weather for a week let alone 10 years. |

Quoting: Wash No, the absence of ice caps would mean all that chilled arctic water will mix into all the world's oceans, cooling the oceans, messing with the undersea currents/weather and bringing us into one of those cyclic ice ages that the vostok ice core has recorded many times. Yes, greenhouse gases will get into the atmosphere like every other ice age cycle, they'll make the weather turbulent along with the OTHER FACTORS like cosmic rays, solar radiation. Temperature rise -> More moisture -> More rainfall -> More cloud cover -> global temperature drop -> ice age All this has happened before, maybe not with 7 billion people on the planet, it will require big changes and flexibility but is that a good enough excuse to surrender all rights to a global government that knows the best way to get through the changes? I say NO |
