So frickin'what. Ayn Rand is no more his guru than I am. Your guy obama hung around a white hating black pastor, a convicted terrorist and his father was a Mau Mau radical. There’s something deeply unsettling about living in a country where millions of people go frothing batshit angry at the suggestion that maybe health care coverage should be extended to the tens of millions of Americans who don’t have it; or when they froth at the mouth in ecstasy at the thought of privatizing and slashing bedrock social programs like Social Security or Medicare. It might not be as hard to stomach if other Western countries also had a large, vocal chunk of their population who thought like this, but the US is seemingly the only place where right-wing elites can openly share their distaste for the working poor. Where do they find their philosophical justification for this kind of attitude? Anonymous Coward User ID: 21979804 United States 08/15/2012 07:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was reading about the guy Romney said he wants as his VP Paul Ryan on wikipedia when I got to the 'Philosphy' part of his page... Apparently he is a flip-flopper just like Romney and says/does what he needs to fit public opinion and get higher up in the political dick sucking race. Quote: At a D.C. gathering celebrating what would have been Ayn Rand's 100th birthday, Ryan credited Rand as inspiring him to get involved in public service, stating that "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand,"[130] In a 2005 speech at the Atlas Society, he said he grew up reading Rand, and that her books taught him about his value system and beliefs.[131][132] Ryan tried to get all of the congressional interns in his office to read Rand's writing. He also gave copies of her novel Atlas Shrugged to his staff as Christmas presents, he told the Weekly Standard in 2003.[133][134] In 2009, Ryan said "What’s unique about what’s happening today in government, in the world, in America, is that it’s as if we’re living in an Ayn Rand novel right now. I think Ayn Rand did the best job of anybody to build a moral case of capitalism, and that morality of capitalism is under assault.”[135] In April 2012, responding to criticism from Catholic leaders over his budget and Medicare proposals, Ryan rejected Rand's philosophy as an atheistic one, as it "reduces human interactions down to mere contracts".[136]He also called the reports of his adherence to Rand's views to be an "urban legend" and stated that he was deeply influenced by his Roman Catholic faith and by Thomas Aquinas. [137] Funny thing is, the reason I was researching him was because I had a very bad feeling about him for some reason... looks like just the beginning of my intuition being clarified. |

Are you kidding? I've read Atlas Shrugged, as well as a little about Ayn Rand. I can assure you, she never once called for anyone to be murdered and dismembered. In a nutshell, she believed that no one should be compelled by force to give what they've worked for to someone who didn't. I've seen her interviewed, during which she said she happily provided for her loved ones because it was her choice and it made her feel good. I am one who thinks the way Rand predicted the downfall of our society in Atlas Shrugged is uncanny, and I do appreciate her ideas. Anything to keep them reminded of their limited role. Anything to remind them to back the fuck off. Ayn would have socked Paul Ryan for his TARP votes and other big-government bailouts. It's possible Ryan evolved his view. I'm sure people pointed out she was an atheist. Just because you adhere to someone's philosophy doesn't mean you agree with every cent of it. At the core, Ayn's right: NO to generosity, giving or social diligence by force. Libs love to talk about the "poor" -- how many of them volunteer or do anything for their community? They want the government to do it. It takes the responsibility off the backs of the people. |
