What kind of dog should I get?

A husky would be a good dog.

Have you owned one? They make a good loyal guard dog?

I'll check them out, I always loved the look of Huskies.

Uh, do you mean an ATTACK dog, capable of taking down a man and chewing his face off?

A guard dog that just guards and alerts can be a little chihuahua if he bark loud enough.

My mid-sized terrier it a great alarm, and is not afraid to run down an intruder and bite the shit out of him. That's enough time for me to get in a defensive posture and take care of business, if you know what I mean.

However, the best dog is ONE YOU CAN TRAIN to do what you need him to do. A big pit bull who won't follow your commands is a lawsuit waiting to happen. That's why they are a problem breed.

A German Schutzhund (a Shepherd specialty breed) has shown up in my research time and time again as the best all-around "guard" dog, if properly raised, socialized and trained. But we're talking a big dog and a bigger commitment to training.

Look dont think bad about pitbulls i have one and hes the best dog around hes got a great personality, hes so nice and loving, smart , and is a GREAT guard dog.

I'm not a pitbull hater. I personally don't trust them though, and haven't heard about many police or security forces using them.

I want a dog that police or security forces would use, I know they use German Shepards.

I'll second the mid sized terrier. They're fun as hell, smart, protective and so god damn lovable. Not to mention its easy to find a breed to fit your specific needs. Everyone will probably mention bigger dogs but IMO when SHTF you're better off with a small dog, medium dog and a large dog and then breeding them to suit the specific situation.

Schutzhund isn't a Shepherd specialty breed. It's a sport that German Shepherds and other breeds train for and compete in.

Assuming the dog will be OUTSIDE, I'd like to suggest a beagle. I have one. They're extremely smart, loyal, protective, and loving. Ours weighs about 60 pounds. While they're not the biggest dogs, they're all muscle, and could take out anybody. They howl, or "sing" as we call it to alert you of something. Some people are annoyed, but I think it's beautiful. Ours would make an intruder wish they'd never come within a mile of our yard.

Mals are nice dogs. Smart as they can be and busy, busy, busy. A working GSD (German Shepherd Dog) is also very, very active, but I think a Mal tops even them. You'd have to be a real busy person with either one of them. If their energy isn't channeled, they can be destructive...or worse.

Being far more ignorant about Beagles than I'd like to admit, why did you say "outside" dog? And yours is smart?

Reason I'm asking, a beagle showed up at my house at the end of last winter. No one claimed him after trying every resource I could to find his owner. So, he's still here. Sometimes I think he's outsmarting me; other times I don't think he has a brain in his head at all. His nose seems to be the control system of his body.

He's adorable, loving, funny, but tries to be the top dog and intimidate my GSD. More courage than brains. Also extremely possessive. Of me, his crate, his toys, his food and water. Anything.

So, will you tell about yours?

Husky's are jumpers and escape artists....better have a high fence. Very intelligent, not so much guard dogs. Akitas are good guard dogs as are GS. Remember, most thieves will not enter a yard with a big scary looking dog in it. Good luck...and visit a shelter...lots of good pups there.

Get a Lhasa Apso!

Australian Cattle Dog will lay down his life for you. They are family friendly, intensely loyal, fearless, athletic, very intelligent. Needs a strong leader though since they are so smart. We had one. She was amazing.

German Shepherd. They will make a better guard dog. Especially if you have the money to have it trained.

Pit bulls are good at laying waste to other dogs and critters, but they would probably be too friendly to would be thieves.

Rottweilers are intimidating but they end up big and fat and lazy.

Doberman Pincers can be trained to be a good gaurd dog and they are intimidating as well.

get a border collie. 50 to 60 lbs of spring steel with a brain.

We have a female husky that will be 1 year old next month. Caught onto house training very quickly & is very obedient.

She doesn't let the other dogs in the home push her around even tho they are older & have been here longer than she has.

Monks used Lhasa's as their temple lookouts. Loyal and very alert dogs. Love them.

I have had Labradors and Lhasas' and both make KICK ASS guard dogs.

Take your pick, or get both like we did!
