Seriously, a German Shepherd if you want an intelligent, trainable guard dog. They are hard to beat. Alsatian is very similar.

But for the cute factor, there is this to consider. Will alert you to anything within a block with ceasless yapping, guaranteed. Then YOU can deal with the intruder.

Re: What kind of dog should I get?
What do you want the dog to do? If you just want it to make a racket if someone is there, you want a watch dog. Any of the small breed terrier types do a good job there, yorkie, fox terrier, Jack Russel.

An actual trained guard dog, which will go after a person, is not a good idea. Because you are expecting a lot for a dog to decide if the neighbor's 5 year old needs to get bit or not for accidentally coming into your yard. Lawsuit just waiting to happen. Plus, do you know how to train one? Probably not. A correctly trained guard dog has to be one that will stop dead in its tracks in hot pursuit of a squirrel when you call it back, much less a person.

Any good size dog that has some training will intimidate folks who need to be intimidated. People used to think my Newfie (you probably couldn't MAKE him bite you) was some kind of attack dog just because he knew how to heel.

Regardless, don't get a dog expecting that it will protect you. The most dangerous animal in the house has to be the person. You need to be the leader for the dog, it can't be the dogs responsibility to take care of you. A dog is not a machine, it requires a lot of care from its owner. A dog is a long term commitment, not a short term problem fix.

Look at some of the breed rescues and on petfinder.com. There are lots of wonderful animals of all sizes, ages and breeds out there that need homes.

Get a Lhasa Apso!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13376778

Actually, you may be on to something.

Monks used Lhasa's as their temple lookouts. Loyal and very alert dogs. Love them.

I have had Labradors and Lhasas' and both make KICK ASS guard dogs.

Take your pick, or get both like we did!
 Quoting: DrumrDude 21083803

Yeah, but the Lhasa's job was just to make a lot of commotion until the Tibetan Mastiffs showed up to see what was for dinner....

Re: What kind of dog should I get?
An Anatolian Shepherd dog is a flock guardian and a superb guard dog however they are not for the novice dog owner.

Unless you have a great deal of time and energy to invest in socializing a dog stay away from Anatolian Shepherd dogs as they require much work and an alpha owner.

Mine is 15 months old 32” at the withers and at last weigh in was 117 pounds and he is still growing and when fully grown will reach approximately150 pounds and may gain another inch in height. From a standing still position, he can leap over my head and I am 5’6” tall.

Their lifespan is 12-15 years, the AKC has a minimum height requirement for the breed but no maximum size, and some grow to be 36” tall.

The farm where I bought my pygmy goats had 2 huge white dogs...shepherding dogs of some sort...maybe anatolian? They were there to protect the goats.
They were massive yet not aggressive. They also had a donkey and a llama
for the same reason.

Re: What kind of dog should I get?
I'll second the mid sized terrier. They're fun as hell, smart, protective and so god damn lovable. Not to mention its easy to find a breed to fit your specific needs. Everyone will probably mention bigger dogs but IMO when SHTF you're better off with a small dog, medium dog and a large dog and then breeding them to suit the specific situation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2108941

yep, maybe even 2 or three, they can attack in packs... You could have a huge dog or 2-3 small mid sized ones, you could have 10 Pomeranians lol

Whether a dog owner or not, you must appreciate the efforts this owner took to sell her dog. Look at the picture and then read the following sales pitch.

Dog For Sale.
Free to good home. Excellent guard dog.
Owner cannot afford to feed Jethro anymore, as
there are no more drug pushers, thieves, murderers,
or molesters left in the neighborhood for him to eat.
Most of them knew Jethro only by his Chinese street

 Quoting: mopar28m

Have you owned one? They make a good loyal guard dog?

I'll check them out, I always loved the look of Huskies. hf
 Quoting: Blue Beamed

huskeys are not really guard dogs tho
higly energetic

I love dobermans as guard dogs
I have owned one, loved that dog to bits
but have to be strict with them
once you have a rule of "don't jump sit on the sofa", then stick with that rule for the rest of the dogs life
if you train them in discipline and obedience
you get the best out of them
I have flaws, I was just as surprised as you when I found out!
