A lot of TV programming is subtitled English language shows.
Dubbing is only used for kid shows.

Why would the small sample of your personal experience produce a more reliable result than the census?
 Quoting: Halcyon Dayz, FCD

good point. but i don't believe in census results.
 Quoting: Belgian Coward 15782258

The census results don't care what you believe of them.
Unless you personally interviewed 10,000 people you're the one who doesn't have any data, only anecdote.

Really? Confabulating a Grand Conspiracy because the data disagrees with your myopic view of reality?

take a practical point view: on sunday, most of the many many churches in the netherlands are filled with people. on sunday in belgium, most of the many many churches are almost empty.

There you go again, pulling 'data' out of a body orifice.

You have to make a tough choice: Heineken or Grolsch? Don't come to the 'Achterhoek' if you prefer Heineken!

Well, you can get it here.
No idea why.

just make sure you aren't romantizing the Netherlands. all these quaint little houses surrounded by pasture and farmland sure look nice and cosy, but guess what: they're all occupied. finding a nice spot to actually live can be difficult and especially expensive. the majority of the population lives in districts of apartment buildings, around the large cities...
 Quoting: Belgian Coward 15782258

Thanks. I admit, I probably do romanticize it. The villages all look so quaint. It's very appealing.
 Quoting: aNONaMITTy

I was surprised to learn that the population density of the Netherlands (404 pop/km^2) is actually slightly less then England's [sic].
It's just as urbanised as the US, we just don't have as much rural area and wild lands.

Okay, this is my third day at this thread. I appreciate all the input from everyone. I'll be back tomorrow and it will probably be my last day to stay at this thread like I have been.

But please feel free to post your thoughts. I've enjoyed seeing what everyone says. I've found a lot of nice people here at GLP!!!!

And for the Dutch, I look forward to partying with you pretty soon, LOL!!!

statistics are flawed by nature. a small sample can never represent a whole, unless it the whole was evenly distributed. our world isn't.

no. i actually spent years in churches on sunday mornings, in both the netherlands and belgium.

Find a nice rural place to live in the south or the east. The west is not the place to live, it's only nice for daytrips or partying in which case our small size and good public transport will get you there in no time.

Get accustomed with the folowing foods: drop, bitterballen, pannenkoeken, haring en boerenkool!

I looked up Dutch cuisine. Bitterballen and haring en boerenkool weren't listed!!! So, maybe it depends where you live for those two.

I don't mind licorice but without salt and pancakes...who doesn't like them?

Thanks for the tip re: south or east. I will look there for sure.

Why the hell would you move to this stupid country? Most people very boring and shallow just as the landscape (which is really not natural at all.) The climate SUCKS, and every neighbourhood outside the cities is the most depressing thing you'll ever see. The only good thing about the Netherlands is Amsterdam! Everywhere else you will feel lost and out of place as an American.
