I can tell you all about the netherlands.

There is nothing there at all except for windmills and fields of tulips. And fields of marijuana. And everything is completely flat, no hills at all, except for dikes which keep water out. And the national food is Edam cheese.

Or am I thinking of Holland?

And is Holland the same thing as the Netherlands?

Yes you can ride a bike and everything is flat and crowde with people, not only around the big cities.
And almost everybody speaks English, so that's nice for a starters..
 Quoting: Momo 13113022

I have noticed that a lot of the Dutch speak English. That will make it nice for me. But, I plan to learn the language as best I can too.

I didn't realize outside of the cities is crowded. That kinda sucks!

Why do you move to The Netherlands?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21674902

I would like to try a different culture from America.
 Quoting: aNONaMITTy

That's all? You can't just 'try' another culture just for fun...
What are your skills?

Well, it isn't just for fun. I believe it will be a good place for me to grow spiritually.

I'm a professional with an education and had a career as a Social Worker and then alternative health. I also illustrate and edit books.

Thank you. I just need to find a room to rent somewhere. I don't care where. I've got a profile on some of the NL rental sites but it would be great if I could work something out with a GLP person.

No, my country doesn't need me.

Food here is going to go up and probably everything else. One thing I like about NL is it's bike friendly and has trains. In fact, most of Europe seems to be like this and that works for me. I can always rent a car if I need one.

Re: Moving to The Netherlands, Tell Me What to Expect!
It was not free! Somebody payed it!
They have free healthcare. I was there as a tourist about 20 years ago and my friend needed to go to the emergency room. We were worried about how we would pay but it didn't even cost a dollar. The doctors were surprised that we were surprised at FREE healthcare.

The people there are pretty nice, slightly mercenary, and don't have a lot of respect for what they perceive as the violence of Americans. They can't understand our gun rights, the high crime rate, and all the wars we are "involved" in.

They are very efficient and clean. Many of them wash and scrub (with a scrub brush) the sidewalk in front of their house DAILY. The Dutch language sounds like English with a very heavy German accent, it's kind of cool to listen to it. The food is not very creative, lots of potatoes and cheese, kind of like Switzerland.

I enjoyed my time there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 858876

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2050312

Well duh. But their system is very efficient and the doctors all know going in to the profession that they will be paid at a standard rate.

Food here is already expensive, it will get even more so due to shortages and taxincreases. Quality is going down also, most of the food in the stores is imported while we produce better quality food for export!

The trainsystem looks great in theory, but expect frequent delays. Our trains don't run when there's leaves on the rails :)

Good train system nationwide, very bike friendly, everyone speaks English, nice scenery, coffeeshops, good beer, pleasant friendly people, quite good for shopping.

The food is generally pretty naff and expensive. Supermarkets
are small and pricey compared to USA/UK.

To me, being in the Netherlands reminds me of what life would have been like if I'd gone back in time, stood on a beetle and come back to the future and everything is slightly different and weird.

Nice country overall.

- in general the establishment, economic and political power lies within North and South Holland (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague).
- Holland represents another mentality, more bragging and louder, where Provincialen are more modest and reserved.
- Holland often falsely represents the Netherlands in foreign countries.

This is why Provincialen (ppl from the other provinces) dislike Hollanders I suppose.

From what I've studied so far, I'll be okay because of my savings.

The better way to move would be to apply for certain papers (MVV or something like that.) I may have to come back home and apply for it, but that's okay. I have family here that I wouldn't mind seeing.

Also, there are employment agencies in The Netherlands that specialize in helping expats gain employment. That's a route I'm also looking into but I'm going on over anyway because I want to check it out.
