Re: Moving to The Netherlands, Tell Me What to Expect!
Thank you. I think I've just found out the part of The Netherlands I'd like to try.
 Quoting: aNONaMITTy

personally, i love the southerns parts of the netherlands (province Noord-Brabant and Limburg). they are, for me, the ideal mixture between the dutch and the flemish people. there is also a lot more nature, compared to most other provinces in the netherlands.

on both sides of the border in these provinces, you will always have a mixture of both cultures. the actual 'border' is just a sign saying "welcome to holland/belgium" anyway, tollbooths and border police stations have gone since a decade.

if you like to live in a smaller town with plenty of cultural accomodations, and easy public transport to the rest of the netherlands and belgium, try Tilburg.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15782258

More nature? No. That is in the neast and north.

You have to make a tough choice: Heineken or Grolsch? Don't come to the 'Achterhoek' if you prefer Heineken!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1400299

as a belgian, i'm not ashamed to say that Grolsch is actually a nice beer :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15782258

The Dutch started to get less freedom, police everywhere ridiculous rules.

The Dutch have severe problems with North Africans that cannot adapt. Additionally the US gang culture slowly became the life of a lot of kids. Playing getto.

Now they are closing the coffeeshops practically by issuing crazy laws. In fact they could probably close every coffeeshop TODAY because of the insane 15% THC rule.

For everything there's a rule. And then everything is artificial as the whole country is cultivated or even created (which is an interesting achievement.) Not my thing I like nature and mountains.

This sounds great. What town did you visit that reminded you of southern France?

I live in Maastricht in a nice little village just outside the centre called 'Borgharen'. Today we went to Maasmechelen (20 min drive, just in Belgium), which has really nice lakes with a bit of a sandy beach, very very nice!
 Quoting: Daikirai

I was in Maastricht 2 weeks ago.

Such a friendly atmosphere there, totally different from Amsterdam, Rotterdam & The Hague.

Groningen is also nice, Arnhem & Nijmegen too.

Utrecht is supposed to be okay - I can't tell 'cos I never go there.

Haarlem is a very nice town to live - inbetween Amsterdam (15 minutes by train to the east) and the beaches of Zandvoort in the west.
 Quoting: RoXY

Thank you. This is the kind of thing I was hoping for when I posted this thread. I personally prefer to live in a smaller village but had no idea where. Your list is helpful.

Re: Moving to The Netherlands, Tell Me What to Expect!

both the netherlands and flanders (roughly the upper half of belgium) don't have any nature left. originally, those regions were either floodland, heath or moorland - but massive forests have been planted during medieval times; those forests have almost been cut entirely these days. a few spots still stand ground, and are more or less untainted.

the only real nature close to the netherlands is either on the german border (forests) or in the southern part of belgium (hills, forests, peatland, farmland).

of course, if you like the seaside, you'll find all you need :)
Quoting: Anonymous Coward I am very attracted to Belgium, probably because it seems so much closer to nature. Thanks again.

Like I said: go to the east of Holland: Twente and the Achterhoek. Rural, nature. Enschede has 200K+ inhabintants and a University.

This is what attracts me to Europe. The architecture, the culture and green trees, bushes, flowers, etc:. America is too landscapped. Everything is touched by human hands.
 Quoting: aNONaMITTy

Huh? Too landscaped bsflag have you ever been to pacific northwest. Norther California,Oregon,Washington
 Quoting: Ready2bugout AKA R2B BOB

indeed. the netherlands and belgium are one of the most densely populated and unnatural landscapes you'll find. its landscaping might look more natural or organically formed, because we have been building stuff for few thousand years, just patching it all together on top of the older stuff.

in general, the netherlands and belgium are quite rural and quiet places to live though. you just can't compare it to the vast natural reserves of eg. the united states or canada.

And about people being high on hash & weed I'd like to point out that they don't cause the kind of problems (agression being one) alcohol causes.

Hey OP,

The beer is a deal!!cheers

Just let me know when you arrive and where you are!

I went 7 times to the US, starting in the Ronald Reagan
and Archie Bunker (lol) periode in 1985.

At that time I was 24, and I went because Bruce Springsteen's album Born in the USA.

Yess the Boss invited me to you country.

I am still a loyal fan, I saw him this year in
Cologne and went for a 2 day trip to Paris to see him!
He is still my inspiration!!

Now he is playing in Fenway Park in Boston, wow
what a history in that stadium, more than 100 years old!

From my location its 3 or 4 hours by train to Paris, London, Brussels, or Berlin, Frankfurt or what ever.
Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are around 90 minutes.

But at that time in 1985 it were Glory days all the way
for me!!
I went to Orlando/Disneyland 5 days, saw the everglades
and ended up at Key West and got drunk with the sailors.
In Orlando I meet a guy from New York with his girlfriend
they invited me to New York.
So, my first visit to New York was a year later in 86!

My first landing on American ground was
a flight with Pan-Am from Amsterdam to Atlanta.

My first Budweiser was at the transit area at Atlanta.

After 2 hours there I was on the Plane to Miami!

It was my first American city to visit. ( many would follow after that, I tell you later, if you want!)

How I came to the choice Miami?
It was because the series Miami Vice haha

Re: Moving to The Netherlands, Tell Me What to Expect!
When I arrived and landed my first time,
Starship had a number one with this!

We built this city!

Cool song I had it on my casette player in the plane
when I landed!

I know I am getting old! lol

Casette player? Man, those days are over, eh? I always liked that song. Same with Born in the USA. Oldies but goodies.
