I don't understand.

If a person gets "food stamps" (SNAP) and decides to spend their money on something you see as a "luxury purchase", how does that give them more money to continue buying "luxury purchases" with their "food stamps"?

How is using the money allotted to them abuse?

How is lobster an abuse of "food stamps"?

It's food isn't it?

Abusing the system would be people getting these benefits when they aren't qualified (fraud) or selling their benefits for cash (fraud).

Using it as intended is not fraud.

I have to say, im all for food stamps for those who need it, but if you are buying whoopie pies, do you really need them? I just baked my husband a cake for his birthday. cost $3 for the mix at shaws. These cakes cost $5. I see people in the store buying $20 icecream cakes with ebt. I am an attorney working 80 hours a week and i cant afford those fuckin cakes. WTF
 Quoting: Shellbe

Yeah you CAN afford it, you just choose not to.

When i was on food stamps, I actually DARED to buy a few lobster tails (it was 40 bucks) for mother's day since I was broke and couldn't even afford a card for her. I had to make it and sewed her a pillow. I wanted to do something nice for her. I bought her a beautiful cake.

The rest of the time, i only bought healthy stuff and veggies.

also meant to add, when my father was a kid, his father was injured and out of work for about a year. with 5 kids they ended up getting food stamps temporarily. However, it was a stigma, and they did all they could to get off. At one point, my grandmother bought salted pork with them, and was told "that was a luxury and they could not purchase it with food stamps.Ē When did this change? part of the reason i am where i am is because my father drilled it into us that we needed to go to school and take care of ourselves so that we would never live like that. When the fuck did this change? Donít mean to rant, and again, I strongly believe that we should help those in need, but this is really pissing me off lately. One time I tried to help my best friend get temporary assistance when she was 6 months pregnant and her boyfriend thought heroin was more important than the baby (she left him). It was one of the most difficult things to get, and in the end, she gave up. So how the fuck do all these people get away with this?
 Quoting: Shellbe

Kind of like how in this country I get enraged when at the grocery store I see morbidly obese people who have to drive in store-issued motorized carts because they're too big to walk, have their baskets filled with cases of Coke, Chips Ahoys and multiple loaves of white bread. And I pay for their health care. Insanity.

People's priorities and sensibilities are totally out of whack, and the social safety net enables this.
 Quoting: ExoPoliChick

totally true. when i was 16 i had to have my foot reconstructed because the radiation i had as a baby fucked up the bones. was in a cast for 6 months. i tried to use one of those stupid chairs at shaws and they were all being used by obese people that could not walk.

When I was on food stamps and down on my luck

I budgeted and planned my meals so that my pitiful 130 dollars a month would feed me...

I had no money no income and life sucked... but i had foodstamps and could eat...

I would buy big bags of rice and pinto beans and made each cent count...

Foodstamps roll over each month... kinda like unused AT&T mobile phone minutes...

Each month I would try to "save" a few "stamps"

and every 2 months I would buy myself a steak... thats all i got... the only way I could enjoy life... every 2 months...

I didnt abuse the system... i just ate pinto beans and rice... so I could afford a 10 dollar steak once in a while

More people do that you would imagine...
 Quoting: Evol Eric

Please dont get me wrong, im not saying people should not be able to buy staek once and a while, even if on the government dime. just see alot of abuse lately. Watched someone buy 6 lobsters on ebt the other day. up until recently, i spent maybe $40 a week on food because between school and rent, i could not afford it. but we did not starve and we made it last. just seems that people should be forced to make better decisions if they are getting government assistance. if they are buying whoopee pies, cigarettes or alcohol, maybe they dont need the assistance. ((and yes I know, food stamps donít buy cigarettes, but the cash on the cars do.)

Your FATHER being the key word! Most of this generation "80s babies" grew up during the crack epidemic! Most of us had no father or father figure. I had my grandpa (pap) so I've turned out a little bit old school and knowing working hard is more important than most could understand.

The sooner you realize you are more fortunate (not better) than the person buying a $20 cake, perhaps for a child's birthday. The better off you will be!

Sure they could have baked a similar cake for 25% of that. But who the fuck are you to judge? Remember you are an attorney not a judge!

Not to mention if you work 80 hours and can't afford a fucking ice cream cake, wtf are you spending your money on?

you are very correct and i know how fortunate i am to have a father that cared, my husband did not. as to question number 2, drugs, lots of drugs. u have to in my profession, LOL. In all seriousness though, it is very expensive to live in boston. The average income is $60,000. My expenses, which do not even include a car payment, comes to about $3000 a month.

It is just hard to judge a person's real intent when we dont even know why they are buying whoopie pies. All i can tell is they could use that first time in that bakery or else they know that it will not be accepted.

I am sorry that after working 80 hours as a lawyer you cant afford a lobster ...Maybe you can look on your personal finances and make better planning for your future rather than wasting time checking out people on 135 ebt card.

It's obvious who needs it and who doesn't. People buyimg steaks and lobsters DO NOT NEED it and the people you see watching the sale items needing to stretch it because if they dont, their family will go hungry, do need it and maybe they could get a little more each month if people just think its a free for all.. My husband and I have 2 jobs each and I have to watch my money and I don't want to pay for their lobster. Also the ones that need it are usually shy and embarrassed by it and want to get off it as soon as they can because they have dignity and pride.

When you mention working 80 hours a week and say I can't afford a $20 cake, it makes me think you are a liar! And makes everything else you've said seem like bullshit!

For real did you ask that woman if her kids birthday was soon, or if she's some fat ass that is gonna eat a whole cake. Or since you were so upset by her using an ebt card, when she could by the same thing for around 25%. and use her food stamps on something else. Instead of it being an issue of your own entitlement (80 hours and can't spare $20) you could have said hi I'm (insert your name here) I notice you are getting a very expensive cake and could bake your own for less than half the price. And its very simple to bake it yourself, unless you are living at a shelter (which of course you can't use an oven).

But instead you get on the net and judge her. If you didn't offer her an alternative, you have no room to judge her. Ask your husband how many dicks his mom sucked to put food on the table! I can remember before I was put in a foster home and later my grandparents custody, my mom would go steal food from the store. Not junk food, hamburger and that kind of thing. Other times we ate cat food.

Saying blacks do not contribute to society is complete BULL and you know it, some people are so shallow. concentration camps should not exist and I would not wish that even on my worse enemy.

Every company in this country has black workers, you act like the only people with jobs in the usa are white, utter bullshit. While those fat white CEO's are sitting on their asses there are hundreds of minions black and "other" working their asses off to keep this "society" going.

I assure you wether its getting your car fixed, grocery shopping, doctors appointments, medicines, schools daycare, there are plenty of blacks somewhere along the line.

Since blacks dont contribute to society, refuse to buy anything from a store that has black employees, refuse to send your child to school with black employees, refuse to get your car fixed at a place that hires black employees, dont eat any food manufactured in plant that hires black employees, I assure you, your life will come to a stand still.

All i can tell is they could use that first time in that bakery or else they know that it will not be accepted.

I am sorry that after working 80 hours as a lawyer you cant afford a lobster ...Maybe you can look on your personal finances and make better planning for your future rather than wasting time checking out people on 135 ebt card.

listen, you want to buy your kid a cake on their birthday, i have no problem with that (although it really would be cheaper to make your own if your really that hard up). but go to the farmers market sometime, that is not what this article is about. people are doing this every week. i make the money i make because i choose to help people who need help. i accept that. nothing to do with my finances. what i cant accept is people who buy the shit every week, which there are many who do. i never would have thought this way until i moved to the city. it is a different world here. To think that you should be entitled to buy liquor and cake with your ebt card is just absurd to me. as i mentioned in the beginning of this thread, i tried to get my best friend who was 6 months pregnant food stamps when her husband left her for heroin, we had major problems getting it, and she did not have an income. at the same time, my neighbor, who is a 3rd generation welfare recipient, has no problem. thatís fucked up!
 Quoting: Shellbe

EBT consists of either food or cash, the food part which most receive CANNOT be used to buy anything other than food. The cash part I believe is TANF, you have to be in school or job training to keep it. IT IS ABSURD to say because someone is poor, thy dont have the right to buy snacks and $20 caked if they wish. Food stamps are a right, not an entitlement, as a attorney im sure you know that MOST americans are ligible, its the caseworkers who are areseholes and make it difficult. Everyone has the right to eat whatever they want, trying to dictate what a poor person eats makes us NO BETTER than TPTB that try to restrict the freedoms and inalienable rights we were born with. Food stamps are everyones right, they are not technically a welfare program even though they are distributed through welfare - everyone remember that.

 Quoting: andawg221

you are very correct and i know how fortunate i am to have a father that cared, my husband did not. as to question number 2, drugs, lots of drugs. u have to in my profession, LOL. In all seriousness though, it is very expensive to live in boston. The average income is $60,000. My expenses, which do not even include a car payment, comes to about $3000 a month.
 Quoting: Shellbe

come to think of it though, why does my income keep coming to issue here. i work hard, thanklessly, for my money. I know i said i cant afford a $20 cake, but that was the truth. yea sure, maybe once a year i could, but thats not what im talking about.
 Quoting: Shellbe

 Quoting: andawg221

ok,so i could probably buy a $20 cake if i wanted to once in a while. i certainly could not do it on a regular basis, as many do at least in my neighborhood, and that is not a lie. my husband does not agree with me on this one. as to my mother-inlaw, im sure there were plenty of dicks, i love her to death, but she overdosed and died 4 years ago. im not ignorant and even have brothers and sisters who probably could use assistance. i have seen people who really need food stamps and they r not buying cakes or whoopee pies. they bake their own. that is my point!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2667425

we all make sacrifices. i went a week without groceries to get my mom a new tv for mothers day this year to replace her 1982 box television. However, i did not use a ebt card to do it. If you r using the ebt card for luxuries, than maybe y donít need it.
 Quoting: Shellbe

All parents with EBT cards dont deserve to buy tv's for their families, their kids should just sit at home staring at a wall all day because their underprivileged? Poor people also should'nt buy lobster or expensive steak, they should just be miserable eating hot dogs?

The least among us (meaning) the ones with the least contribution to mankind are being enabled toward their complete reliance upon the government. Soon, the camps will be filled with them. Black & brown is correct.

you have to be brown or black to get on those programs

Not realizing there great grandfather was a druggie, like your dumbass friends boyfriend is now!

ALSO is the woman accepts EBT benefits then she cannot discriminate on what customers purchase with their cards, they can strip her of the right to accept EBT at all, which it seems she does'nt care about anyways.
