The Bristol pound — usable only with member businesses in the city in southwest England — is to launch in September, and organisers are deluged with local firms wanting to sign up. "The perception of banking and money is that it's a very ruthless system: people are out for what they can get," co-founder Ciaran Mundy told AFP. "This is about saying yes to something new. It's tapping into a different set of values about money." The scheme has "captured people's imaginations", he added, in a recession-hit year when British banks have been beset by scandals and ministers talked openly of a possible euro collapse. Forget GLOBAL. The solution to the current world monetary crisis is going LOCAL.

It slated to be fully functional next month. Eerie timing when there is talk of Finland and others getting out of the Euro. This will probably take off as more and more cities face potential bankruptcy. Most people want to spend money locally and this gives them the incentive to do that in a official way.

It was, at least, on national radio Radio 4 'Today' programme this morning and on their national News website. This is a promising, well-developed initiative in Bristol. The city of Bristol has launched its own currency, which cannot be used in Bath, never mind Berlin or Bombay. But other local currencies have never really taken off, so can the Bristol scheme really fly?" The answer to all the worlds problems . . GO LOCAL and redistribute the wealth back to the people. If every area did this most problems would go away.

The Bristol Pound is the UK’s first city wide local currency, the first to have electronic accounts managed by a regulated financial institution, and the first that can be used to pay some local taxes. The Bristol Pound is run as a partnership between the Bristol Pound Community Interest Company and Bristol Credit Union. It is a not-for-profit social enterprise.
