I was visiting West Virginia in late July and noticed a strong sulfur smell on I-79 between Elkview and Amma (about 40 mi N of Charleston). Of course WV has lots of geothermal activity, including the famous White Sulfur Springs in the Eastern Panhandle region, but this part of WV is not noted for springs or anything else except hardwood timber.
Quoting: Little Bee Could be a Paper Mill. I know when i drive through Covington, VA, the MeadWestvaco paper mill spews sulfur into the air and it smells of sulfur for miles. I live 20 miles from this mill and can occasionally smell it at my house, depending on the winds. Are there any paper mills in the detroit area or any type of manufacturing plant in that area that is using sulfur?
