That sinkhole is part of the Unaka- Buffalo cavern system. It is documented in the 1969 NGS survey of unicoi county. Does none of these cities do their research? I knew about it before the school was built

Coffman estimated the sinkhole is 7 feet wide and 4 feet deep, but even firefighters couldn't tell how far the depression goes underneath the house. The sinkhole caused cracks in the foundation and inside the home in the floors and ceilings.

TYLER (KYTX) -- Tyler police reported a sinkhole at the intersection of Front Street Southgate Avenue.

Scanner traffic indicated city workers thought the weekend's rains may have caused the sinkhole. Rain can cause higher than normal flow rates through underground pipes, causing failures at weak points in the line.

Malloy said dirt had collapsed from the wall of the sinkhole on Thursday, and revealed a steel plate and brickwork. Malloy said the county is no longer investigating the sinkhole, because it only has money budgeted for mining-related sinkholes.

Good morning Peeps,

Not such a good day yesterday as it applies to our studies here...I had to make a run to a manufacturing facility in Saline MI yesterday, I left the office in Dearborn at around 2pm and went west on I94, as soon as I hit the I275 interchange the smell was immediate and the strongest I've drove through yet. It was bad enough that my eyes, nose and throat were severely irritated and nausea set in. I left the plant after an hour and headed back the same way, not only was it still present but it was even stronger. This is much farther west than we knew of previously and judging by the amount of it in the air I'd say I may have been closer to the source. By the time I arrived home in the eve I had a massive migraine from it. I went to bed very early due to the HA and feeling very sick so I did not call the USGS as I promised, hopefully I can make this happen today.

After driving through what I did I got to thinking (insert smartass remark here, lol), why am I smelling it so much stronger on the hghwy's? Any large gaseous releases will be spread by the wind across vast areas however it seems the heavier masses are settling in low lying areas. most of our hghwy's here are lower than the surface streets by about 2oft, it seems that the clouds of gas may be settling into those lower areas, becoming trapped and being channeled through the hghwy corridors by the wind. Winds are normally out of the west, this could account for the smell being stronger farther west and lighter going east and then north if the source is indeed somewhere in the western suburbs. More 'on the ground' intel is needed.

We have seen no further activity from ants lately and Kobe seems to have settled down a bit.

Over the past year or so, there have been several reports of people in towns in Arkansas and Missouri, near the New Madrid fault region, that are smelling a foul odor in the air. Some compare it to dead animals or bodies, and some to sulfur.

These reports have been increasing over the last few months, and people reported noticing the smell before a recent earthquake in the region, in Missouri.

The smell of sulfur would indicate that the volcanoes in the region are beginning to activate, and that the water in-flow from the affected North American plate area (along with the pressure from the Caribbean plate), due to the destabilizing of the Gulf of Mexico sea bed, is now near to completion.

This combined with the flooding of the New Madrid rift area (which happened with the great floods earlier in the region), means that the magma chamber can now move and begin to force its way up, as the Gulf of Mexico sea floor begins to collapse, and that the necessary destabilizing of the fault area has occurred (best way to cause a quake is to flood a fault). The pressure would be actually placed also in areas like Atlantic coast and Kansas-Oklahoma for example.

Around the time of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes, people in the area where the quakes occurred, noted the smell of sulfur, and especially after thequakes hit, many eyewitness accounts described a stench of sulfur in the air. This was due to the releasing of fumes from the magma chamber, up through cracks, with the pressure pushing it from the eruption sequence.

So, the only thing missing now would be a trigger. If a trigger comes, then there will be an eruption of the fault line, which could also allow for the Gulf of Mexico sea floor to collapse and sink, thus lowering the sea level of the New Madrid fault region. This would cause massive flooding, which would also include tsunamis caused by the enormous earthquakes that would occur.

What does it sound like? last night we heard a very strange sound as well, sounded like massive helicopter rotors beating and a train rolling by at the same time. hard to explain but wasn't mechanical, no trains in the area and no Chinooks observed (was much louder than a Chinook but sound was similar).
