Arctic sea ice looks set to hit a record low by the end of the month, according to satellite data.

Scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center said data showed that the sea ice extent was tracking below the previous record low, set in 2007.

Latest figures show that on 13 August ice extent was 483,000 sq km (186,000 sq miles) below the previous record low for the same date five years ago.

In its latest summary, the centre said the average rate of ice loss since late June had been "rapid", with just over 100,000 sq km melting each day.

One year ago, the moderator of this symposium died in a plane crash at Resolute Bay, Nunavut. The jet crashed while military exercises simulating a crash of a jetliner were taking place on the ground. The airport was under military control at the time:

Fwiw, I heard that noise a lot in my area around the time of the Clintonville booms back in the spring. You sort of feel it more than hear it, too.

I live in Northville and I've been hearing the strange noises as well. Also all of the birds have left my property.

Interestingly, of all the EQs listed, that's the ONLY one that wont load...

Today, around noonish our clock and a big picture fell off our dining room wall...this has never happened. The nails did not give away. Then my DH heard the plates rattling on the wall in the living room, we had vibrations in the house. We are northcentral Illinois, about 2:30 p.m. So 2 separate incidents. No boom, just rattling and picture/clock falling off wall, again, this picture and clock had no reason to just fall off the wall..hangers will still in place, they were rattled off the wall somehow. We were sleeping and the crash woke us up. Today is 8/26, Sunday.

IN a few words, why is this thread still going? No Major Geological Event has happened in Michigan since the start of this thread which was over a week ago, if memory serves.

Cuz that's how we roll round here dontcha know! We form cliques in certain threads and keep it going.

I personally think we're about to get effed from all sides at once, and I'm smack dab in the middle.. oh goodie!

It might not be nothing.

Erwin, Tn Saw a bat land on a shrub tree right in front of me in the middle of the day, went for my camera and just as i was getting into position to snap a pic it turned its head toward me then flew away landing in a maple tree. so i was not able to get the pic. but I thought it very odd to see adult bat in bright sunshine land on a tree. Like it was confused or something.
