Birds Flocking Already---Sign of an Early Fall/Winter?

I notice acorns are falling too soon here to. Dropping like stones and they are still nice and green. And yup, it's cooling down fast here in the NE. 50's at night, 70 during the day. August used to be the hottest month of the year.

Odd, I started noticing this flocking back in July but I was observing the birds heading due north. I watched several flocks due this on multiple occasions while at work on the golf course.

I'm sitting here in August and my feet are cold.

I am in Northwest Indiana. It has been as low as 50 degrees at night. The geese in the pond in the local park by my house, have been organizing to leave for the winter. The biggest sign for me, that we are going to have an early winter, is the ladybugs coming inside my house, and crawling into spaces in the siding of my house. they usually do this in October, not he middle of August.

I know its not the seasons. I remember telling a girlfriend how I wanted to screw her in the park in the middle of the night in august because at the time it was in the 20's celcius at night in August.

but there was also an early summer sometimes in may it would peak around 30 celcius for a week but still drop off in the night.
the leaves are turning and falling because the trees cut them off during the drought. I saw some myself, they werent brown from dying from lack of water, they were purple fall colored and laying on the ground after the rains like it was fall, and it sure was cool in the last few nights before this cold snap.
the wether is triggering the natural instincts of the ecology to believe the summer is over, but its not over, still going up to 30 on this coming weekend.
last few years I tracked the fall temps and it can coast along without going into autumn for a really long time.
just last week the dog ate some baby fleglings off the ground
I wish it was fall too. I hate the heat of summer, and I love the winter.

It's gotten noticably colder at night here (nothern VT). I'll have to make a point to pay attention to the birds. =)

well there calling for a bad winter here in the NE, but I will wait and see..Although I do beleive we are in a very snap back in fourth weather pattern that might be the new norm or shall I say we were in this lull period and the new norm is really the way it has always been....Hmmmm

signs of Early fall here in Missouri, looks like a week of Indian Summer this week, maybe part of next week too but the trend is rapid cooling over the next few weeks. It was cold this morning at 6 when I left for work. I noticed a whole flock of Geese flying south yesterday morning as well, first flock to head south that ive seen anyway, and I work outdoors.

The seasons are very weird anymore. This summer, extreme drought. Last winter no snow. Last Summer, Record rains and floods, with no hot weather in the summer. I dont know what to think of all of it other than Jesus is coming soon.

Central MA here. I've noticed the Canadian geese for a couple weeks now! Strange indeed.

Im over in DFW area..its been hot and dry but this weekend we got 2+ inch. Trees last week however were changing to what looked like fall but its due to the drought as Ive seen it every summer when its dry. Everything goes into slow mode.

This week however after the rains its been 63 at night at mid 80s days. Seems like a pre-fall

I noticed flocking birds two days ago and thought how strange that was but then I realized that this August, at least where I'm at, it is cooler than normal. May and June were brutally hot with weather that I would expect in July and August. Now it seems the weather is where it normally is in Sept/October. Regarding my dog, one of my dogs is getting her winter jacket in but I just assumed it was weird doggy stuff and didn't think about it until someone else mentioned it.

c'mon winter.

Up in NY state here and the chipmunks, squirrels are gone already. Before in May, June you heard them saw them everywhere, digging up lur property. Now it's like something killed them all or they're already prepared for winter.

I've noticed the same thing. We have been in drought for the last two years here in NW AR, so I really can't read anything into the trees dropping leaves early because that happens in drought. However, I did notice my birds molting very early this year. They normally don't molt til late September and they have already started and some have even finished. Also, my dog is starting to put on her winter coat. We were at the lake this weekend and saw several Canadian geese flying V formation coming in for a landing. And thankfully the weather has cooled about 10 to 15 degrees! I guess I better prepare for planting an early garden again next year.

I'm near Boston and always out in and in tune with nature, over the past month or so i've noticed i haven't been seeing as many birds as usual. Only a few are still seem to be sticking around. Bout a month and a half ago a bunch of crows landed on a tree near and kept flying around me constantly cawing over me. Haven't seen any crows or just the intelligent birds..also no bluebirds, hummingbirds, just the occasional average ones, though i have not clue what they're called. The brown ones, and the black with a bit of orange.

In Texas, here. I noticed that it seemed like Fall a few days ago. Not sure why I felt the Fall vibe. But it could be the light. The sky seemed bluer. Fall is definitely upon. September is almost here, so it makes sense. You definitely get a different feeling when Fall approaches. You can just sense it.

very true! thats what i told my wife as we were heading out of town this past weekend. it looked like mid to late october.

I'm in Alberta and I have been hearing cranes heading south. We usually don't hear them until late september.

No, we know the weather has been weird for two years or so but we just don't know what is next. I noticed the arrival of fall last week but was thinking maybe just a odd bit of weather for us here. This and the other thread show it is happening all over, so now we all wonder, what is in store? What records will we break next?

Yep and mating calls are starting early as well, I'm going to dread this winter unless the drought continues and I don't have to shovel 10+ miles a of sidewalk a week haha.

My hummingbirds are still here. They have left in mid august in years past.
Hoping that's a good sign.
