Physical Mediumship
I have been much interested in the concepts of Trance and Physical mediumship, in particular Helen Duncan, a Scottish medium who supposedly died as a result of being arrested during one of her sittings (it is said that touching a medium while he/she is in the midst of producing the substance known as ectoplasm can send said substance back so fast that it damages the organs).

I am interested to know what other GLP posters' beliefs are regarding this. Here are some links to pics and the case of Helen Duncan.

I haven't heard of a case exactly like this before as I am not that familiar with mediumship but I don't see a reason why she should have been arrested. From what it looks like she had a rare gift and was using it to help others. I'll do some more reading on this.

Re: Physical Mediumship
Yes, A Nummo, she had a lot of defenders in high places, but still she was persecuted because of the information she came out with, while in a trance state, regarding certain things it was felt she should not have known about.

There are not many physical mediums around nowadays due to it being such a long, long road to develop in this kind of area. Some will sit in circle for years and years and still not find themselves able to reach the level of physical mediumship.

Of course, this area also has as many sceptics as any other form of mediumship and the question of why some are still trying to communicate with the 'dead' and provide evidence of survival when there is a much larger picture to consider.

Re: Physical Mediumship
Hiya Peaches, I will not say it is a cure for grief as grief has to run its natural course, but I have had imput from those I have received information for that it has been a comfort to them.

Mediums do not work only to provide comfort to those who have suffered a 'loss'. They also work because spirit wish to make something important known to people as a whole and, I suppose, to prove that there is no real death.

Someone recently said to me, the dead should be left alone, but the fact of the matter is...spirit choose to work with those physically incarnated for one reason or another. One cannot force non incarnated spirit to work with them, if it is indeed incarnated spirit! lol.

I am in an awkward position because whilst I receive information and am developing as a physical medium, I am in two minds as to where exactly the information is coming from.

i think with everyone that is going through grief, its the not knowing that hurts the most. did he suffer, was he scared, is he at peace now?

i don't think i will ever have peace until i know he has it

I agree with this also. In my opinion, if energy is neither created nor destroyed, there is no such thing as real death when we look at it from a matter versus energy perspective.

Re: Physical Mediumship
Indeed, I spend some hours trying to help a distressed friend s few days ago. I could have said, I am so sorry for your loss etc, but I chose to remind her, for she is a spiritual person, that the one who has passes is not truly gone. The soul does not die. What we mourn when someone passes is their physical, tangible presence. In that sense, 'death' is the real challenge of our beliefs.

Also, remember, this soul that you loved as you father, mother, friend, brother, sister, husband, wife, grandparent...they would not wish you to live in sorrow. They would want you to celebrate the time they spent with you. To keep the good memories and take comfort in the fact they are now free of the body and able to progress.

... it just depends, and on 'your own personal' beheld qualities... or your intent and desire. For many it may feel like just a bit of a jolt, and much like someone shaking you awake from a rather deep sleep. For others, it's as simple as like a snapping-back kinda thingie... and much like, ya know when ya space out on something or other, and are then snapped back by a thought, or something else that's a'goin' on.

Then there are also those who, and in a particular sense, will feel that they actually lose themselves (or, put themselves like totally aside) within their trance-like states (and just a note here also... we all have them very same kinda trance-like states all of the time too).

Those are the ones though, that may in-deed cause themselves some sort of personal harm... and they really ought to be left to their own de-visings whilst going into, and coming out of, their trances. For they will 'tend' to take on, and very personally speaking, much much more of a physically/feeling oriented kinda connections. In other words, they think, feel, and believe that they are actually living, and for that time, their trance.

Hope that helps some/any, lol...

Re: Physical Mediumship
There seems to be a problem with people who are called mediums. They don't have the "raport" that shamans do. I don't think you should channel until you completely understand what goes on over on the other side. The best way to do that is through the shamanistic approach.
They too will have trouble if you move them when they are in a trance state. But they have better protection and hopefully spirit guides who can warn them about the danger coming. Mediums open themselves up to anything, it seems. They also don't shield very well. Maybe they just need to attend a few Shaman seminars.

Re: Physical Mediumship
Too many people are throwing around this new age word, 'Shaman'. It is not a word comes from the Native American peoples, it was coined by new agers, hoping to cash in on the desire to return to a more simple way of life. Seminars? Since when can you learn your spiritual pathway from a seminar? I think not. Good grief.

Re: Physical Mediumship
And honestly, in truth, tell me, what is the different between the so-called shaman and medium? Not a great deal, in my opinion. Why assume a medium has no protection? Why assume the spirit a medium is in touch with is any different to spirit anyone else is in contact with?

Re: Physical Mediumship
Many who call themselves shamans know very little. most mediums are highly realistic people who have a great deal of practical, hands on experience with the spiritual world....shamanic expereince has always looked a bit airy-fairy to me in comparison to true mediums. Particularly physical mediums...although they are a very rare thing!

Re: Physical Mediumship
Indeed Monty, although there is a growing number developing in physical mediumship here in the uk, and some circles for such development are cropping up. I develop on my own at the moment, but have had some amazing experiences during this. At one point when I closed my eyes to enter a trance state, this incredibly bright white light seemed to filter in as if my whole room had been lit up. I used to believe it was all...a lot of nonsense, the ectoplasm and all of that, but I am more open minded to it now. It is a long, long road, which is one of the main reasons it is so rare these days, I believe, and also it can be physically taxing. Physical mediums are known to have shorter lifespans and there are risks attached to it, although apparently, ectoplasm is being replaced by a dense energy for materialisations. It is not my main path, but it is a part of it as I seem to have a natural gift for this area.
