Re: Medicare And My Mother
sell your mothers house, and build a room on your house for her. Take care of her.

It's not the governments problem to take care of your family.

Whats wrong with people.

I know people in my church who have taken eldery people to live in their home to help them out. Until they are too sick to live at home or are a danger (starting fires or leaving to freeze to death outside) to themselves or children in your home, YOU should take care of your family.

Thats what life is all about.
Taking care of each other.

Take care of your mother.

Sooner or later, as planned, they will get us to a point where we either die or are forced into the system. If all you noble bastards want us to die while you sit on your high horses and tell me to go to Wal-Mart with the rest of the trash, - well, screw you. Where there's life there's hope. I feel for you. My mother is 85 , currently in a rehab center (sick sad joke), going back to her house soon.
I may end up moving into her townhouse....
not what I want, but I will take care of my mother as she did me.

Just a hundred a month? What if she had a car payment? In your state, do car payments count as necessary expenses? I find the whole medicaid system ridiculous. Nineteen year olds that pop out kids and never worked a day in their life can qualify, but God forbid older Americans with no minor dependents need medical. We went through this with my mother in law. It's a nightmare.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15450698

Car payments are not allowable deductions. She never learned to drive, anyway. Yes, it is a nightmare. :(

Yes

THIS

since when is it someone else's responsibility to take care of someone's family??

100 years ago people did it automatically

Why is it everyone in this country feels ENTITLED in some way?

The elderly think it is someone's responsibility to take care of them....

The poor think they are entitled to hand outs

Take care of your own family
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22161671

We feel entitled because the government keeps taking and taking and taking until there is nothing left. Now, if you have a decent insurance policy, they are going to tax that by 40%. Sometimes I just think the government wants society to fail. Everything THEY do is a failure.

But to answer your question, take a look at the deductions on your paycheck then YOU tell ME why we look to government. A portion of your payroll taxes go to fund Medicare; what part of that don't you understand? If they'd keep their friggin' hands out of our pockets, we could afford things like long-term care insurance, etc.
 Quoting: ruxpin

They have been taking since before I was born...

This is the system here. Take take take

I am young; but it seems NO ONE seems to really care.

They keep voting for the same and the system never changes...

2 party system?? it is all the same. Like I said, I am young but I see it clear as day.

Why don;t people DO something about it?

NOw, the same thing is happening.

Everyone is told they are 2 choices for "president"??

They seem like the same choice to me...

Nothing EVER changes in this f'ing country....

But everyone like to biaatch about it but no one wants to

CHANGE it

I don't understand people's reasoning here...

My parents, their parents put up with the same damn shit

Now, my generation will put up with it and even more....

THere won't be anything left

We are told by the time we are in our 80s, no health care benefits and NO
social security...better start saving now....

But they can find plenty of money for all the wars, plenty of money to give to other governments...

This shit just goes on and on and on

it starts with the elderly and handicapped, but rest assured it will affect all of us. and yet they give money to other countries and give themselves pay raises. They have medical insurance very different from what they give us.
Keep voting out the robbers and vote in new, and if they do nothing bring in more new people its the only thing we can do
You Mother will have to make a choice, your house or a nursing home. she has to realize she just cant stay in her house any longer, besides soon she will need 24 hour care and unless you have lots of money you will have to go through the same thing again.
This country throws their old and handicapped away.

The slippery slope is well greased. The elite have no problems when it comes to medical needs, as they have the best care available to them. FTR, politicians are not forced into obamacare. They have their own insurance. If obamacare is good for the regular people, it should be good enough for them.

They wanted us to become their patsies and be their slaves. Oh please we're so old. No we won't clean toilets and drive 2 hrs each way every time they needed a ride. No I don't do dishes for charity, especially when they could easily hire a maid.

This is what you can look forward to. Get off the band wagon while you can.

tsk tsk its the nursing home... and YOU leave the state before they can charge you for their care.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
As of August 1st, Medicare drastically cut their covered services. As reported on the news, BILLIONS of dollars have been removed from the Medicare fund, and used for obamacare.

Here is how it affects my mother;

My mother is 89, and doing pretty good overall until earlier this year. She had a pacemaker put in, and subsequently developed congestive heart failure. She is now on oxygen 24/7. She probably only has 1-2 years left max, maybe less, because of the congestive heart failure. As of August 1st, her medicare coverage was drastically reduced, as it was also for millions of other people. She previously had a Therapist come in 1 day a week, a Nurse 2 days a week for a couple of hours, and a Home Health Aid for 2 hours, 2 days a week.Due to the medicare cuts, all she has now is the Nurse for 1 hour once a week, and the Home Health Aid for 2 hours, once a week. Myself, and one of my older brothers live relatively close by. We stop by frequently to her home(yes, she still lives in her own home), and check on her, cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes, take out garbage,do her laundry, etc.
We really depended on the medical professionals to fill in the gaps, and now they have been taken away almost entirely. We are in a horrible situation. My mother is deteriorating, refuses to live with anyone, and her medical help is down to almost nothing.
Financially, no one can really afford to hire a full time person to stay with my mother. Thanks to obamacare and the raid of the medicare fund, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We cannot afford to hire someone to stay with her full time. We do not want to put her in a nursing home, as there is no doubt she will not last there longer than a couple of months. IF we put her in a nursing home, medicaid would kick in and cover it, after we sold her house and the proceeds of the sale were used up. She doesn't want to leave her home.
I wonder how many other children of the elderly are now in the same situation as us?
 Quoting: tiger1

ME - please e-mail me at beckaction@yahoo.com. I am almost about to lose my job due to caring for my parents. Then we are shit out of luck. I have no bro or sis to help. No one. I am a freelance writer on the side and I'm writing an article about this. PLEASE send me a private e-mail - I don't need to know your identity I just want to go over the facts of your situation. NO ONE is talking about this stuff.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21982181

I have a friend who quit their job to care for an elderly parent. Now that their parent has passed, they cannot find another job.
 Quoting: tiger1

That is why you have to put yourself before them. Take care of yourself first or you can't take care of them. This is what parents have to do with children. And put your foot down with her. Don't let her ruin you or your siblings life. Take care of her but don't let her control you and be unreasonable. She won't like it but that is just the way it is. You have become the parent now so act like one. If she can push you around she will keep doing this until there is nothing left of you.

Care for her but she is being unreasonable. And you are sounding like an enabler. But if you want to bust you butt for someone who really doesn't care if you get sick/have no life caring for them then go ahead. But I would put my foot down and either she moves in with you or a sibling or she has to fend for herself. My friend finally had to do this to her dad who is close to 90. His wife died and he lived an hour away and couldn't take care of himself. He did not want to leave but they put their foot down and made him move. She is old herself and couldn't deal with it all. He is happier now the decision is made and he is with them. It is not being mean to not let her have her way all the time. It is actually loving on your part to say NO. And to tell her what she is going to do.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
As of August 1st, Medicare drastically cut their covered services. As reported on the news, BILLIONS of dollars have been removed from the Medicare fund, and used for obamacare.

Here is how it affects my mother;

ME - please e-mail me at beckaction@yahoo.com. I am almost about to lose my job due to caring for my parents. Then we are shit out of luck. I have no bro or sis to help. No one. I am a freelance writer on the side and I'm writing an article about this. PLEASE send me a private e-mail - I don't need to know your identity I just want to go over the facts of your situation. NO ONE is talking about this stuff.

I have a friend who quit their job to care for an elderly parent. Now that their parent has passed, they cannot find another job.

There is nothing I can do with her. She is extremely independant, but yet is so dependant on others.

...and I watched Obama's speech in New Hampshire yesterday, dripping heavy with sarcasm like no other President in history; stuttering, claiming he SAVED Medicare.

Yeah, saved medicare by killing off all the elderly, the bastard.

I was off work Thurs and Fri to take my mom to a dr. Tomorrow is catscan. We decided to do it the hard way rather spend 12 hours suffering in an emergency room waiting for the illegals and knife stabbing, gunshot victims and drug OD'ers to get treatment before us. Tomorrow I tell my boss at the company I've been at for 8 years that I have to leave early again. He won't tolerate much more of that, he just wants someone at my desk working, and if I can't do it...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21982181

Yes, you will lose your job. Hopefully your mom can support you if this happens.

Yes

THIS

since when is it someone else's responsibility to take care of someone's family??

100 years ago people did it automatically

Why is it everyone in this country feels ENTITLED in some way?

The elderly think it is someone's responsibility to take care of them....

The poor think they are entitled to hand outs

Take care of your own family

how? How do you keep a job to keep a roof over your head and do full time care at the same time? Everybody thinks they have an answer. There is no answer.

If i was wealthy, I could easily hire full time care for her, but, that is not the case.

You can lay it on the line and tell her you can't do this much anymore. That she is going to have to give in and meet you at least half way. Get ready for tough love or you can just let her run your life until she dies.

I had to move a few states away from my mom because of work and she knows it is either assisted living for her or moving in with me. I cannot run down to see her at all because finances are tight now. It is rough but you have to do what is best for you. She is 90 years old and has lived a long life. She doesn't have the right to run anyone ragged. She needs to understand she is old and has to deal with it now. And you need to help her see this.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
I love how GLPers act so anti-government and hate "THE MAN" yet when their mothers need free healthcare they get upset when it isn't enough.

Your mother shouldn't be living at home, at that state she SHOULD be in an assisted living facility - period. Its insane to complain because you aren't being given enough over the top free taxpayer benefits on this. Its only right that medicare would cover it after depleting her assets - you should pay for your own bills in this country.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
I feel for your family Tiger...

Is there a way she can move in with you or a sibling? Does she have any other health issues other than CHF? Have you tried calling like a center for the aging or such?

I took my grandfather in to live with me till he passed. Was the only choice we had outside of a nursing home... Which Was never gonna happen. It actually was a wonderful thing. He became more alive being around my kids. And my kids loved to listen to his stories.

Best of luck for all of you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16463130

She refuses to live with anyone. She is also almost totally deaf, and legally blind. No one can help, unless we have the money to pay for it. There are no free services out there.
 Quoting: tiger1

yeah, when I had to leave work to check on my parents in the EXTREME heat, one of my bosses called and said "I don't understand what the problem is, can't you take them somewhere, why is the heat such a problem?" Well, let's see - I don't have CENTRAL AIR like you do. I had to buy a second window air conditioner, put it in myself, put up sheets, strategically place fans. Check my father who has COPD, Dementia, on O2 24/7 and make sure he didn't put his flannel jackets on - which he loves to do even in the heat. I had to keep them hydrated. There were no cooling centers open, and even if there were we didn't need one. I had a cool place for them but they need attention beyond sitting them in a cool room. Nobody gets it unless they live through it. Everybody thinks there's SOMEONE out there to help you. There is not; not without big bucks.
