Re: Medicare And My Mother
sell your mothers house, and build a room on your house for her. Take care of her.

It's not the governments problem to take care of your family.

Whats wrong with people.

I know people in my church who have taken eldery people to live in their home to help them out. Until they are too sick to live at home or are a danger (starting fires or leaving to freeze to death outside) to themselves or children in your home, YOU should take care of your family.

Thats what life is all about.
Taking care of each other.

Take care of your mother.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1290518

Yes

THIS

since when is it someone else's responsibility to take care of someone's family??

100 years ago people did it automatically

Why is it everyone in this country feels ENTITLED in some way?

The elderly think it is someone's responsibility to take care of them....

The poor think they are entitled to hand outs

Take care of your own family
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22161671

We feel entitled because the government keeps taking and taking and taking until there is nothing left. Now, if you have a decent insurance policy, they are going to tax that by 40%. Sometimes I just think the government wants society to fail. Everything THEY do is a failure.

But to answer your question, take a look at the deductions on your paycheck then YOU tell ME why we look to government. A portion of your payroll taxes go to fund Medicare; what part of that don't you understand? If they'd keep their friggin' hands out of our pockets, we could afford things like long-term care insurance, etc.
 Quoting: ruxpin

They have been taking since before I was born...

This is the system here. Take take take

I am young; but it seems NO ONE seems to really care.

They keep voting for the same and the system never changes...

2 party system?? it is all the same. Like I said, I am young but I see it clear as day.

Why don;t people DO something about it?

NOw, the same thing is happening.

Everyone is told they are 2 choices for "president"??

They seem like the same choice to me...

Nothing EVER changes in this f'ing country....

But everyone like to biaatch about it but no one wants to

CHANGE it

I don't understand people's reasoning here...

My parents, their parents put up with the same damn shit

Now, my generation will put up with it and even more....

THere won't be anything left

We are told by the time we are in our 80s, no health care benefits and NO
social security...better start saving now....

But they can find plenty of money for all the wars, plenty of money to give to other governments...

This shit just goes on and on and on

it starts with the elderly and handicapped, but rest assured it will affect all of us. and yet they give money to other countries and give themselves pay raises. They have medical insurance very different from what they give us.
Keep voting out the robbers and vote in new, and if they do nothing bring in more new people its the only thing we can do
You Mother will have to make a choice, your house or a nursing home. she has to realize she just cant stay in her house any longer, besides soon she will need 24 hour care and unless you have lots of money you will have to go through the same thing again.
This country throws their old and handicapped away.

The slippery slope is well greased. The elite have no problems when it comes to medical needs, as they have the best care available to them. FTR, politicians are not forced into obamacare. They have their own insurance. If obamacare is good for the regular people, it should be good enough for them.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
As of August 1st, Medicare drastically cut their covered services. As reported on the news, BILLIONS of dollars have been removed from the Medicare fund, and used for obamacare.

Here is how it affects my mother;

My mother is 89, and doing pretty good overall until earlier this year. She had a pacemaker put in, and subsequently developed congestive heart failure. She is now on oxygen 24/7. She probably only has 1-2 years left max, maybe less, because of the congestive heart failure. As of August 1st, her medicare coverage was drastically reduced, as it was also for millions of other people. She previously had a Therapist come in 1 day a week, a Nurse 2 days a week for a couple of hours, and a Home Health Aid for 2 hours, 2 days a week.Due to the medicare cuts, all she has now is the Nurse for 1 hour once a week, and the Home Health Aid for 2 hours, once a week. Myself, and one of my older brothers live relatively close by. We stop by frequently to her home(yes, she still lives in her own home), and check on her, cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes, take out garbage,do her laundry, etc.
We really depended on the medical professionals to fill in the gaps, and now they have been taken away almost entirely. We are in a horrible situation. My mother is deteriorating, refuses to live with anyone, and her medical help is down to almost nothing.
Financially, no one can really afford to hire a full time person to stay with my mother. Thanks to obamacare and the raid of the medicare fund, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We cannot afford to hire someone to stay with her full time. We do not want to put her in a nursing home, as there is no doubt she will not last there longer than a couple of months. IF we put her in a nursing home, medicaid would kick in and cover it, after we sold her house and the proceeds of the sale were used up. She doesn't want to leave her home.
I wonder how many other children of the elderly are now in the same situation as us?
 Quoting: tiger1

Sorry for your situation. I can relate.

Took care of my mom (alzheimer's in my home for 5 yrs)after selling hers. She was 88 when she passed this past March.

She did really well with/for us. Ate good, had the run of the house (felt at home) watched tv with us and went out for visits to family and errands with us.

She got a terrible stomach flu and was put in the hospital. At that time, we decided that we were so maxed out emotionally and physically that we'd let her go on to a nursing home from the hospital. I did everything to work with them and to see to it that she would get the help she needed daily...even going up there every day once or twice to feed her.

She was on pain meds as needed (it was tylenol only) but we had also included hospice (seems like it was necessary to actually get her into a home...but I thought it was just to help make sure she was not being abused).

Long story short. She was dead with 2 months. Why? They switched her pain medicine to full strength powerful medicine of some kind without telling us, which stopped her from being able to suck down water or eat. They told us she was just entering the next stage of alzheimer's and was giving up. By the time we figured it out...it was too late.

May Mom forgive me! And God too! My only solace is that she was wanting to go home to be with the Lord.

Yeah, guess you haven't seen the statistics on the amount of doctors that are already, and will be - closing up shop. And the hospitals that will be closing. That WILL NOT happen under Romney. Not one person in the House or Senate voted for Obama's last bill. Do you even follow what's going on? Romney/Ryan are not our saviors, we know that, we're not children, but there IS a stark contrast between their ideology and Obama's.

Look at Obama - LYING LYING LYING saying Ryan's plan will END MEDICARE AS WE KNOW IT. It won't even TOUCH anyone currently receiving Medicare or approaching Medicare. Vouchers are for the Gen Xer's and below. My boss is a millionaire and he gets a Medicare check! You don't opt out you know. Ryan's plan would allow people a CHOICE to go about Medicare as usual or get that money back to invest in a lump sum to invest as they want to gamble with it. This is a GREAT idea and will take those people out of the system, like my boss, and leave money there for the poorer people who DO need it, like my parents.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21982181

They are going for their one world government no matter who is elected.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

Eventually, the Bible says that will happen - so I agree. But my parents are alive NOW and we fight for every day. Fighting means getting OBAMA out of office ASAP.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21982181

But then one problem is just replace with another. And that is how it will go until they get the one world government. Remember they ALL lie. And why fight what the Bible says is inevitable? Don't get yourself worked up over presidents who really don't matter.

there are a million stories just like it OP. When my father was in the hospital, the morning nurses pumped him with xanax because he was asking for recuse breathing treatments and he annoyed them. That was the morning of his nuclear stress test. He had a complete loss of memory for hours and was never the same after that. I was there almost every minute, except those few morning hours. He's still with us, but like I said, it did permanent damage. People are not being held accountable for these things. That pisses me off. But we do all we can, God knows it, and so does your mother and father. God Bless and find peace.

I feel for you, Tiger. Very soon I will be in your shoes with my dad who has CHF. He refuses to live with me or go to a nursing home. I've told him he may not have a choice and he looks me in the eye and says "there is always a choice. All I need is one good day." He is planning to take matters into his own hands if you get my drift. So now I live in fear of THAT happening. I am sick to death of Obama's lies and all the Democrats who point out that the cuts to Medicare were cuts to the providers and not the patients. Like we are ignorant enough to believe that cutting reimbursements to the providers would not affect patient care or services! To those who do not see that Obamacare is one giant step to a single payer system in which health care is rationed for all of us,I truly feel sorry for you. Yes, Romney and Ryan are unknowns, but anything is better than the current administration.

Medicare was funded by our money. It is supposed to be a safety net, but the rules and regulations are so fucked up that people go broke trying to take care of our elders.

Just fuck off... I owe Medicare 20K for nursing home costs for my mother in law...we took care of her until her dementia became so bad that she was a real danger to herself and everyone around her. Then we put her in a nursing home, they took her SS, her pension, and tried to take the house.
She died 9 months later from septicemia. In effect, they killed her to make room for someone less troublesome.

Where are the obamatards who bleated about how wonderful obongocare will be?

Or is it really that government is a total failure and lies about everything?

Even now you can't understand that statement, right?

God bless you and your family. The elders should be given all they need. I have been in your shoes. Pray! And give all the love you can with your full heart. She needs love and respect for her dignity than anything.

That is why she needs to stay in her own home. She has dignity there. A nursing home is nothing but a warehouse for the elderly to finish them off.

My mother doesn't want anyone to live with her either, with the exception of my daughters. She trusts them. My oldest was staying with her for a while, but she has medical issues of her own, and young children. The middle one has 2 kids, including a 7 month old. My youngest is away at college.
 Quoting: tiger1

I recently came back from TX to take care of my 88 year old aunt because she had a ruptured apendix, had surgery just in time and I went to help out.

She's been taking care of her husband my uncle who is the same age, he has dementia and hated the fact that there was a 'stranger' in the house. He wants to continue on with her taking care of him, but she is getting frail and he screams and shouts and loses it a lot. He cusses all the time and is always irritated over something. He was a highly intelligent person and very polite and personable, but now it's as if he's a different person. He also can't remember things and kept forgetting who I was.

They have money so can pay for care themselves so they are very lucky in that regard. My aunt wants to hire full time home health aides or CNAs, but my uncle refuses to have anyone in the house with them so it's a huge problem!

The entire family is in an uproar over this because they both need help and can't go on like this much longer by themselves.

He absolutely does not want to go into a nursing home yet refuses to have another person in that house, and she is determined too that they will stay in that house until death.

That is bad about those cuts in medicare, people paid into that all their working lives and now it's being taken away. I was under the impression they would pay for home health as it's cheaper than nursing home but I guess not.

Good luck to you OP, a lot of us are up against these problems.

First of all, if your mother is 89 years old she has used many years of services so you have no right to cry about 'cuts'. If you totaled the amount she paid in over the course of her life, she used her up her share 15 years ago. Sounds to me like she is a very bitter, stubborn, and spiteful old bitch by refusing to live with anyone. I would not cater to her. If she wants to be on her own than let her be on her own and 100 percent independant. Make it clear that when she falls on her bitch ass and busts a hip that the option to move in is no longer available.

The jig is up pal, you can spout that kind of stuff all you want, meanwhile 70% of the vehicles parked in front of our Local and Childrens Hospitals license say BAJA! The whole system is rout with corruption, no way to fix it regardless of ideas or finger pointing.

Sad, but true. Free medical, food stamps, housing, education, etc.

I know one thing, we have done EVERYTHING to stay out of the social services system and not become wards of the state. I have worked my fingers to the bone, exhausted my body and mind...

if we caregivers were PAID for the services we render, it would amount to BILLIONS of dollars in this country. Of course, the government doesn't want that. Sooner or later, as planned, they will get us to a point where we either die or are forced into the system. If all you noble bastards want us to die while you sit on your high horses and tell me to go to Wal-Mart with the rest of the trash, - well, screw you. Where there's life there's hope. I've never had a vacation, I work everday until I'm physically exhausted. I pay my taxes and I help others when I can. Obama is squashing every little bit of life and hope out of us. It is a rotten thing to do - for these seniors out there - to see this rotten ass Communist destroying the country when their strength is fading and the light is growing dim.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
First before i answer i must say that i harbor many, unusual, beliefs and ideas, now with this said i will state one of them, i do not believe that we as Americans and in many places of the world, live in a country run by a government of the people, by the people, and for the people as they say, i believe that the us government is a grand act of theater, on the scale of television. I believe that through many means, ones that i am not fully, and may never be aware of, the true masters of the world control it, the world. I think that one of these ways is the US "government". Now with this said, i can move on. Your story is one of the many that poke holes in President Obama's health care plan, as there are many holes being poked in much of what everyone says, all the time. seeing the deteriorating condition that has been ever present in my life of 17 years, leads me to presume this, that they are just trying to bring it down slowly, they know that shit will hit the fan, in layman's terms, and America i see as the powers that be's power base, and they are trying to gently lay us down into the third world living standard, and throwback to the 1860s, whilst them, the powers, whomever they be can still assert control over the rest of the world while keeping americans just happy enough, but just scared enough, to keep them in lethargic stasis, I'm just a kid, i have no grand plans as to how to stop them, nor do i think its necessary, all i want to give is a little advise, this is the condensation of my life so far, become as self, or tribe sufficient as possible, start trying to learn how to produce your own food especially, but also clothing, basically learn all of these now esoteric traditions, and skills. Learn how to, and then teach your children how to question everything, to think for themselves. I think that this could someday become a game of survival. I see Americans to day, of all ages, as children, sucking from their mothers tit, figuratively. become independent , it wont be easy, since when was the road to independence easy, it took some of you more than 18 years to become independent of your parents. now some people may misconstrue this as revolutionary/terrorist talk. cannot stress how much this is not, they only thing i would ever suggest anyone to do would be the bravest of all things and follow the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi, if need be all of you just sit down and do not fight protect each other, i don't believe that our military will stand for shooting into a crowd of people sitting on the ground and how can they arrest a million people

Re: Medicare And My Mother
As of August 1st, Medicare drastically cut their covered services. As reported on the news, BILLIONS of dollars have been removed from the Medicare fund, and used for obamacare.

Here is how it affects my mother;

Paul Ryan want to replace medicare with $2500/year voucher per family! What exactly will this buy?

Sorry about your situation my grandparents where in exactly same position. They wanted to stay at they house, however it was not practical. Current US care system set to consume every tax dollar in few years. It is the system we can not afford. Double digits cost increases for decades, while every other profession saw salary decline broke the system. Absurd abuses, specialists who think it is ok to work 4 - 5 hours three days a week, Medicare part D that pays 100% full asking price for drugs. Your mother needs to understand that staying in the house she can not upkeep may not be an option for much longer. In home care thing of the past.

Medicaid laws have changed. For your Mother to qualify she should have transferred ALL her assets to you and your brother 10 years ago.
My Mother refused to move in with me also. I forced her. She called the police on me. Force, meaning, I took NO for an answer. I would never hurt her or anyone. The police simply told her to listen to me. She must move in with her family to help her!!! She passed at 90. She moved in with me at 88. During the time she lived alone, I checked on her daily. But, then there comes a time...

Re: Medicare And My Mother
Tell ya what...her mom can have my moms share. She died three weeks before turning 62, and only drew her share of social security for three months, never drew medicare. Or...I'll give her my dads share. He died at 64, privately insured, never drew his medicare. So...somebody somewhere is welcome to all the years of benefits my parents paid and never collected on. I'd rather see it go to the elderly than to all the teenagers and twentish aged crowd drawing from a pool they never contributed to.

Oh...there are years of retirement or disability benefits there, too. I hope someone older can reap the rewards of my mom and dad's hard work because unlike real pensions, the only beneficiary to the single person's entitlements is the government.

Re: Medicare And My Mother
I feel badly for OP, but like many others here I believe we need to take care of our own families. None of the oldies in my family were put in nursing homes, their children took care of them.
