Medicare And My Mother
As of August 1st, Medicare drastically cut their covered services. As reported on the news, BILLIONS of dollars have been removed from the Medicare fund, and used for obamacare.

Here is how it affects my mother;

My mother is 89, and doing pretty good overall until earlier this year. She had a pacemaker put in, and subsequently developed congestive heart failure. She is now on oxygen 24/7. She probably only has 1-2 years left max, maybe less, because of the congestive heart failure. As of August 1st, her medicare coverage was drastically reduced, as it was also for millions of other people. She previously had a Therapist come in 1 day a week, a Nurse 2 days a week for a couple of hours, and a Home Health Aid for 2 hours, 2 days a week.Due to the medicare cuts, all she has now is the Nurse for 1 hour once a week, and the Home Health Aid for 2 hours, once a week. Myself, and one of my older brothers live relatively close by. We stop by frequently to her home(yes, she still lives in her own home), and check on her, cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes, take out garbage,do her laundry, etc.
We really depended on the medical professionals to fill in the gaps, and now they have been taken away almost entirely. We are in a horrible situation. My mother is deteriorating, refuses to live with anyone, and her medical help is down to almost nothing.
Financially, no one can really afford to hire a full time person to stay with my mother. Thanks to obamacare and the raid of the medicare fund, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We cannot afford to hire someone to stay with her full time. We do not want to put her in a nursing home, as there is no doubt she will not last there longer than a couple of months. IF we put her in a nursing home, medicaid would kick in and cover it, after we sold her house and the proceeds of the sale were used up. She doesn't want to leave her home.
I wonder how many other children of the elderly are now in the same situation as us?

I feel for your family Tiger...

Is there a way she can move in with you or a sibling? Does she have any other health issues other than CHF? Have you tried calling like a center for the aging or such?

I took my grandfather in to live with me till he passed. Was the only choice we had outside of a nursing home... Which Was never gonna happen. It actually was a wonderful thing. He became more alive being around my kids. And my kids loved to listen to his stories.

Best of luck for all of you.

Oh, what a sad story. I really feel for you and your family.

All government programs ultimately SUCK! We have been made a bunch of false promises.

My suggestion is that you try to find a part-time sitter (not necessarily a nurse) who can stay with her to make up some of those missing hours. Perhaps a student? With the economy in the toilet you may be able to find someone very inexpensively.

She needs to stay in her own home if that's what she wants.

Take care.

It's always amused me that when you hear a Demoncrap say something like "they don't care about the elderly" like you did again & again in reference to opposing Republicans during the Obamacare debates, what they're *always* telegraphing is the known quantity that they're trying to hide in whatever piece of legislation that they're pushing at the time.

They're the party of black is white up is down...

I'm sorry you're in this situation. The government is so greedy. They'll take the last penny you've got. We all helped take care of my grandmother around the clock until it got too difficult for us. Then, we put her in an assisted living. When she got really sick, the assisted living had her sent to the nursing home. The first thing they did was make us sell her house as you mentioned. I will be sure to keep your mom in my prayers.

She refuses to live with anyone. She is also almost totally deaf, and legally blind. No one can help, unless we have the money to pay for it. There are no free services out there.

sell your mothers house, and build a room on your house for her. Take care of her.

It's not the governments problem to take care of your family.

Whats wrong with people.

I know people in my church who have taken eldery people to live in their home to help them out. Until they are too sick to live at home or are a danger (starting fires or leaving to freeze to death outside) to themselves or children in your home, YOU should take care of your family.

I could put her here in my home, but she will not live with anyone. She is not incompetant, and if she refuses to live with anyone, there is nothing we can do.
As for the government, they can take care of illegals and people in other countries, but they will not help those who need it here at home. It is cheaper to keep my mother in her own home, than put her in a nursing home. So, if my mother ends up in a nursing home, the taxpayers ultimately will be footing the bill via medicaid. The proceeds from the sale of her house will not last very long, as the value of her simple ranch home is low.

Yes

THIS

since when is it someone else's responsibility to take care of someone's family??

100 years ago people did it automatically

Why is it everyone in this country feels ENTITLED in some way?

The elderly think it is someone's responsibility to take care of them....

The poor think they are entitled to hand outs

You are correct. I argued over the pacemaker, but the doctor scared her into having it done. She went into congestive heart failure 2 weeks after having the pacemaker put in. She has been on oxygen since then.

it starts with the elderly and handicapped, but rest assured it will affect all of us. and yet they give money to other countries and give themselves pay raises. They have medical insurance very different from what they give us.
Keep voting out the robbers and vote in new, and if they do nothing bring in more new people its the only thing we can do
You Mother will have to make a choice, your house or a nursing home. she has to realize she just cant stay in her house any longer, besides soon she will need 24 hour care and unless you have lots of money you will have to go through the same thing again.

The slippery slope is well greased. The elite have no problems when it comes to medical needs, as they have the best care available to them. FTR, politicians are not forced into obamacare. They have their own insurance. If obamacare is good for the regular people, it should be good enough for them.
