Well, finally, a voice of "reason" that I can comprehend!

As I was reading this thread, and all the opposing opinions about raped women getting pregnant, I kept thinking about Elizabeth Smart. According to her own testimony, she was violently raped EVERY SINGLE DAY for 9 months while that CREEP held her captive.

How in the world did she avoid becoming pregnant? I have often wondered about that? I suspect it was partially from the explanation that a woman's body does not "react" such as in a real, loving sexual act...thereby making it harder to conceive. However, I also think your explanation that he may have been impotent might also be the primary reason.

Having said that, I'll add my own .02 about this whole debate, and why the Rep. said what he said. I believe there is a lot of dialog today pertaining to women getting abortions using the "I was raped" defense (not that they need a defense, I know). He may have been defending the fact that (and it has already been brought up in this thread) only a small percentage of women become pregnant from a rape experience. I would venture to say he was responding to a comment from someone else about it...although I cannot be sure, since I do not know the context from which his comments came.

I believe there are some cases. On the other hand, it's also clear that it's less likely under the stress of rape for most women.

So there would be even more who get pregnant by rape if this stress reaction weren't present.

Akin really should have checked with the rape centers to have statistics on the number of pregnancies from rape. It's enough to make me disagree with his view on the matter.

On the other hand, I am not so willing to have an exception for "health of the mother". Almost anyone who can get pregnant and carry it for the first trimester is physically able to carry the rest of the pregnancy (or it will miscarry by itself) and deliver it naturally or by c-section. So this exception really is bullshit, and I've heard it used to justify partial-birth abortions which are truly barbaric.

E(amount of sex | woman is taking pills) = E(amount of sex (unconditionally))

The skill level to do a safe and relatively pain-free abortion is well within the abilities of the majority of the population, so "abortion laws" are somewhat pointless as well as being a violation of our personal rights and integrity.

No you don't actually. Not a child? I assume you think a toddler is a human. So, what makes a toddler a human and an embryo not one? Is it the size difference? Do you discriminate because of its size or level of development? Should we extend this discrimination to older humans that are smaller or less developed? An embryo or fetus is less developed than a newborn, like a newborn is less developed than a 20 year old. Maybe you think that because the embryo is dependent on its mother that is not a human. So, being dependent on only one person is what disqualifies the unborn? Do you discriminate against the embryo because he or she is inside the womb instead of outside? Does a few inches determine whether someone is human or the fact that they are surrounded by a different solution than you?
