I think I know what your on about, I just can't remember what direction I seen it. It was like a 'wow bright triangle' thought at the time lol. Since the sky is cloudy I am using skyview and skysafari of whats above the horizon right now from my location on my Iphone.

According to Stellarium it's Mercury

This is no shit... (Some will understand what that phrase usually precedes)

Around 30 years ago I arrived on the bridge for the morning watch. It was still fairly dark and by the red light of the wheelhouse I could see the mate was visibly shaken. He was calling the 'westbound ship' and giving our location and course. He had us about 90° off course and said he had been attempting to avoid the ship heading directly for us. I looked out the door and saw...Venus directly above Mercury giving the appearance of the Masthead lights of a large vessel. Of course, there were no sidelights on the 'threatening vessel'. I told him I had it and he could go to bed...

Yes, a long time ago Venus was being mistaken for a very close rogue ship. Now it has advanced to rogue close planet status. I guess some things do change...

Mercury is very close to the Sun. You can't even see it on the CFHT. You can see Venus though, and it is much brighter than Mercury ever gets; [link to www.flickr.com]

Re: What Is That Really Bright Morning Star?
Really disturbing.

I was wondering, my friend, why every thing seems to be so different from what it used to be few years ago. I mean, I've never seen Venus as bright as it is now, and now this supposedly 'brighful star' ?

I really don't know what is this about, and I'd really appreciate that one of those 'big-time-astronauts' could explain it to us.

Gawd I am THE worst person to ask directions from lol. I'm in Northern NSW & they were West. I tried to get a photo but couldn't see them

Mabey its because Venus is getting hotter, faster than once thought possible? And as it does, it gets brighter? Mabey even expands some?..

Well, this place doesn't list your Time Zone [link to www.timeanddate.com]
I did find a nice webcam though, [link to www.virtualvernon.com] ...lots of Mountains.
Then I found this [link to www.theweathernetwork.com] which would indicate the Time Zone is correct. IF you are using Time Zone -8 with DST, and, You don't have a Mountain in your way, Venus will rise on the 21st Bearing 058° T at 02:09. Your mileage may vary depending on Time Zones & Local Obstructions. You don't have that problem at Sea.

You should call these people and tell them to add Venus to the list [link to www.theweathernetwork.com]

Here is the time for Vernon, BC, Canada --> [link to worldtimeengine.com]

Redshift, Luminos, and SkySafari all show Venus rising from his location at the time you stated.....around 2:09am. Luminos, which downloads terrain maps, shows a lot of mountains to the east from his location and Venus not appearing over the mountains until almost 3am.

In Sydney Austalia....west over the mountains at 7pm there is huge star triangle.....another guy at work got his star map out and nothing comes up for it....about 10 of us are outside the same time every night and we seem to always discuss the stars and how we didn't see this a month or two ago. I saw a triangle of three stars last month at the beach at night. One of them kept blinking in and out and another did maybe once or twice. And what else is weird is that I only noticed one of the stars at first and it was kind of bright. When I turned my head back to that spot probably after a minute two more were there that I didnt see and they would have been pretty noticeable where I saw them.

I'll give you a hint. Two of the Three in that 'Triangle' are Planets. Planets usually don't appear in a 'star map' cause...they Move in relation to the Stars. The post again is here; [link to astroblogger.blogspot.com]
