I don't really understand why people are against this

There's no real difference between a biometric and a credit card.
Well, it's harder to falsify a biometric than a card.

So, you people using fake credit cards?

I've noticed in a lot of the comments I'm reading below the news articles, that people are calling this a "sanitation nightmare".

The mother and other parents can choose to send their child to school with their own lunches so that they don't have to have their hands scanned.
I wonder if this school is in a poor district? If so, maybe they felt like there wouldn't be a lot of opposition to it.

You know the school is getting some $$$$ to try this out. I am sure they didn't pay for it.
 Quoting: IllumiNaughty

This article mentions the cost of each one, so I'm assuming they did purchase it:

Florida's Pinellas Schools were the first to adopt the technology last year, where the implementation was opposed on the grounds of funding.

Each scanner costs approximately $3,500, though officials say the system will save thousands in unpaid lunch fees.

Most of the kids get free lunches via the school lunch program, don't they? So... what does he mean? They're not charging the government enough?

If they have a record of who is on the free lunch program, doesn't the government get auto-billed regardless of whether the child eats or not? His comment doesn't make sense.

Holy shit. This is near where I'm at! Ignorant principal trying to brush it off.. "oh it's JUST technology.." He's in it for the money obviously. So sad.. I would NEVER allow my child in a public school. It's best for children anyway to be around adults when they're small (elem. age), not other children. They learn more from being around an adult. Plus, more help. I'm homeschooling ours!

Makes sense, get them used to it young so they won't question it later. It won't catch on though, too many germaphobes and angry parents for it to go through. Soon as some sick kid touched it half the school would get sick.

Re: Palm Vein Scanners To Pay For School Lunch at Elementary School in Louisiana
Are biometric ID tools evil?

Fingerprint readers, iris scanners, palm vein scanners, facial recognition systems and more -- biometric ID tools are going mainstream. But will the mainstream go biometric?

When school officials sent out a letter announcing the program, some parents freaked out.

The parents had concerns centering around the belief that all forms of biometric ID constitute what the Christian Bible calls "the mark of the beast."

Wait, what?

Here's what it says in Revelation 13:15-18:
"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, OR the name of the beast, or the number of his name ... and his number is six hundred threescore and six."

Opposition to biometric ID is pretty widespread, and most of that opposition is based not on prophecy, but on concerns about privacy.

A Senate hearing last month revealed the U.S. government's own concerns about the use of facial-recognition technology, both by government law enforcement agencies and private companies like Facebook.

Europe is broadly resisting Facebook's facial recognition initiative, especially Germany.

I agree.

Do you know anything about the technology of this device?
I'm trying to find out how it works.

If you find anything, please post it.

It works through a light source shown through the skin and into the veins

It acts kind of like a finger print scan; picks up your own private patterns and sends it back to the "source"

Something like this...

Palm Scanners To Pay For School Lunch At Moss Bluff Elementary Has Parents Up In Arms, Call It 'Mark Of The Beast'

Moss Bluff Elementary School in Louisiana is looking to streamline lunch payments by implementing a palm vein scanner program, but some parents aren't pleased.

A letter to parents this week informed them of the new scanner that will allow the school's nearly 1,000 students to move through the lunch line faster and with fewer payment mistakes -- an issue that had arisen in the past, KPLC-TV reports.

While the letter notes that parents can opt their children out of the program, parent Mamie Sonnier told KPLC-TV that she was angry and disappointed by the program, as the scanner violates her beliefs. She contends that if the scanners actually make it to the school cafeteria, she'll be transferring her kids to another school.

One of the strongest selling points that can be made for any product or idea is that it is more convenient than existing products or methods.

Here are some "points" that were mentioned in the letter sent home with the child:

Eliminates meal charges when your child did not eat

Eliminates security issues with lost or stolen Pin Numbers and ID cards

Eliminates human error associated with incorrect student identification

Increases speed and efficiency of Point-of-Sales lines

Peace of mind knowing your child was served a meal.

Many people WILL embrace this system of commerce because of its convenience and it will make life easier.

After seeing this could be a problem, it appears the company did make a hygienic, user-friendly model that doesn't require your touch.

I don't know if the school will be using this model though--the video shows a hand touching the product.

Fla. District Considers Student-Fingerprint Scanners

In response to an anonymous survey of Palm Beach County principals, the 171,000-student district is considering implementing fingerprint scans, or biometrics, for student bus riders, lunch purchases, and other uses, according to school officials.

In the survey, commissioned by the district's support operations staff, 60 percent of Palm Beach principals said they would like to see biometrics in schools to help take attendance, borrow materials from the library, or make cafeteria purchases. "Based on the responses to the biometrics survey we will seek Board approval to pursue a pilot use on school buses based on information learned from the previous pilot in school cafeterias and media centers," Joseph Sanches, the school district chief of support operations, wrote in a blog post.

Biometrics in schools isn't a recent phenomenon, as some schools have been using fingerprint scans for more than a decade. CBS ran a story about a school using fingerprint scanning to help lunch lines move faster way back in 2001.
