Why do people off themselves by jumping off bridges?
When you hit the water you are still alive, assuming the water is deep enough. I can't imagine a more painful way to die than drowning, sucking water into your lungs must hurt. It seems like shooting yourself in the head would be the quickest and most painless way to do it.

I dont think it's all about the drowning.
A lot of people jump off of bridges that dont have any water underneath, meaning it's a way more painful, but also much a shorter death.

I don't know why they do it.
It seems very painful to me, but also very very dramatic.
A sort of "I am ending my life by jumping off a bridge"
a "last jump" sort of free-fall. I dont know. It's also public, so people witness it sometimes, making it all the more dramatic.

If it's high enough I'd say you are knocked out, or killed by the impact. The question is why do people off themselves? The only reason I can see that makes any sense, is to avoid the lingering pain of an incurable disease, advance cancer etc.

They want the attention, so they make the death dramatic.

Drowning's not so bad. I drown once when I was 8 or 9. It's more disturbing than painful. You breathed water for months before you were born.

the golden gate bridge seems to be a favorite for suicide. I also wondered
if its high enough to die on impact or do you just drown?

You usually die on impact if its high enough. So , instant/painless death is why.

i imagine that would be the most painful, and i've heard of many cases where it doesn't even kill you.

The most painless way to die is prob by lethal injection.

if you jump from high enough, water might as well be concrete. also if that doesn't kill you, you will probably at least be knocked out and then drown while unconscious.

it's easier to find a bridge to jump off, and more height, than finding a tall building that you can get up on the roof and jump off.

jumping off anything sounds painful to me.

"lethal injection" does three things: make you unconscious, paralyze you, and induce a heart attack. so, what happens when you don't get unconscious enough. Fuck That

have you ever went cliff diving or just regular diving from a serious height and dove wrong? (is dove a word?) anyway, it HURTS. I cant imagine from a real height - it would be like bashing into a concrete wall and instant death

it's not really though, is it?

it takes pain receptors a certain amount of time to register the pain, and by the time they have, you're pate, so it's quite painless really I reckon.

Jumping in the water from that height is like hitting concrete. The only way you may have a chance to survive it is if something hit the water before you and 'broke' it.

in almost all death scenarios, there are a percentage of people who might have prolonged suffering or survive with permanent damage. Thats the risk you take, and why most people DONT. lol.. pills, jumping/falling, shotgun to head.. You could fail at any of them.. Aside from jumping into a volcano or being at ground zero of a nuke.

I think the easiest way would be to take your favorite alcohol and music and go sit in your car with the garage door closed with the car running. Just drink until you pass out to your favorite CD.

I met a woman one time in a retirement home. She had half a skull...a huge indentation on the side of her head and it looked very bizarre. My Mother told me she tried to commit suicide with a gun and it didn't work.

Re: Why do people off themselves by jumping off bridges?
I've had a past life memory of jumping off a bridge, although during the memory I didn't relive the pain.

I remembered the jumping, hitting the water, my legs and arms were broken and disjointed as I was falling through the water, and then I blacked out.

I then found myself out in the Void with a monks robe type of garb on. My head was down, my face hidden in the hood, and I was alone and contemplating what I had done.

Oh, lol, but your question was why, not what happens: I was young and in love with someone my father didn't approve of...so I jumped off a bridge.

Quite the daft reason, however it's one that brought me such a large understanding on down the road.

Wasn't there supposedly a bunch of 10 people or something who survived the Hiroshima nuke, literally right at ground zero. Remember reading something of that nature a couple years back. So even thats not a certainty.

WOw pretty interesting experience. Fits in with what I believe about the afterlife resulting from suicides. When you arrive on the other side there is a prolonged periond of self-reflection that lasts longer than time can describe. You're stuck in a void until you come to realize exactly what you threw away by taking your own life.

+1

But, falling 185 feet into water is like driving into a concrete wall at 100 kph, without your car protecting you.

You're probably unconscious, or dead, from the impact alone.
