Last week, the level of the Mississippi River fell more than 53-feet. The Mississippi River has now been closed after U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could not continue dredging enough to keep up with the amount of water loss that government officials claim is due to the drought. [link to www.msnbc.msn.com] [link to usnews.nbcnews.com] Is that really true? Isn't there another natural event that would 'drain' a great river like the Mississippi or other waterway basin? What about underwater bed ground fissures and sinkholes? Is there something the U.S. government has not 'yet' told the American people or the rest of the world? - RE

Second, the entire river is not closed as you insinuate. A few stretches may be closed of a few miles or more, but the river is alive and well for the most part and I personally witnessed normal barge traffic in St. Louis just today. As to your thread title, the river is not emptying and sinkholes or fault lines have nothing to do with the river being low. I guess technically it empties into the gulf of Mexico, but we both no that's is not what you were referring to. This is a ridiculous alarmist thread with absolutlely no beneficial information. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such garbage.
