Ah yes, meant to get to that one. It was shot with the T16 telescope in Spain:

It's my lucky telescope for when the weather isn't playing nice here in Florida.

That's so awesome. What do you use in Florida?

That's so badass. Is it a 12?

I've had a 8' dobsonian mount for a few years now and I wanna upgrade to something with a camera, and obviously much bigger. I got a decent set of celestron eyepieces recently, but it didn't give me too much of a difference with the wide field lenses. It's hard being on a tight budget, but I've been saving. What would you recommend for a 12' and a camera?
 Quoting: AllGunsBlazing

8" LX200. You might be surprised to learn that I'm actually happier with it than I would be a 12" - the classic LX200's all had the same mount systems from 8"-12" (the 16" was a horse of a different color). This meant the 12" had the least amount of spare payload capacity. The 8" leaves me with a generous amount of excess payload capacity I can use to slap on as many extra cameras/scopes as I want without even approaching the mount's carrying limit. If you want to get into astrophotography or videography (I HIGHLY recommend astrovideo with a mallincam) you want to give your mount an easy time; it'll make life easier for you. I'd recommend getting a 10" celestron schmidt-cassegrain (or heck, maybe a 12" if your heart is set on it) on a CGE pro with a hyperstar system (or whatever celestron calls its equivalent) and a mallincam. That will change your viewing experience forever and give you the ability to swap between widefield and closeup all with the same scope.

In other words Jupiter's orbit is out of place.

How goes, .gov shillboy? When are you idiots going to figure out that when you 'debunk' what appears to be a questionable story you prove it is true? Oh and BTW, FUCK OFF
 Quoting: Anonymous Astrophysicist 1310569

I nominate this for ignorant post of the month.
 Quoting: DaNose

Jupiter's orbit is changing constantly as it cycles, as it should be.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19099505

This is true, but that's not the question here. The question is whether or not it's "out of place," in other words changing in some abnormal manner being driven by an unseen perturber. The normal changes to Jupiter's orbit over time are too subtle to notice in the very widefield SOHO images seen here over only about a single orbit.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

So compared to its orbit a few years ago its a 'lil different 'cause it changes slowly as it cycles but is not acting abnormally 'cause there is no nibiru!! Right?

Doc Astro,

You stated in your thread from yesterday that we are north of the galactic plane and there is no alignment with galactic center in 2012. Do you deny that there is an alignment between earth, sun and center of our galaxy from a visual perspective on the upcpming winter solstice which only happens once every 25k years or so?

Not saying this means anything in particular but I understand it to be true. Please comment and thank you.

There is an apparent or visual alignment between earth the sun and the galactic plane (not quite the center though) this winter solstice. It is not unique to this year, however. It has happened every winter solstice since the 90's and will keep happening for a few more years.

Thank you, that's all very helpful. I definitely want to get into trying to take pictures and/or video with my scope. I can't pm with my account, so sorry for the threadjack, but this stuff is so much more helpful than website adverts.

Edit: Also, I don't entirely have my heart set on a 12, it's just I don't seem to get much with my eight inch as far as deep space objects, which is kinda disappointing. Granted however, I was 18 and could only afford a Skywatcher. I know, lol.

You're wrong.

The problem is the galactic plane is very wide. IT takes the solar system decades to move through it. We have been moving through it since the 90s, and will keep on for a few more years.

The Winter solstice is just the point where the Sun is in between us and it, which happens every year as the earth revolves around it.

Absolutely right, it does. The only thing even remotely close to unique about this period in time is just the fact that it happens to occur on the day of the december solstice right now. It's been that way for a number of years now thanks to precession, and it will continue to be that way for a few more years.
