Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
I would like to make it clear from the start that I am probably not a very sensitive person. I work as a research scientist. I have a very logical and regimented mind when it comes to observing nature. I've got a PhD in Chemical Physics and the closest I've ever come to a spiritual experience has been in the course of my research, when I just had to stop for a while and admire the beautiful complexity of the nature at quantum level.

I've never seen ghosts or witnessed any other paranormal events while fully awake, but I've kept an open mind towards "paranormal". There are limits to our knowledge and these boundaries are constantly being pushed further. Who knows what lies in the murky worlds of multiverses and quantum weirdness?

In 2006 I moved to a brand new house in a newly developed area of the town. After living there for about a week or so, I began to realize that the house had a strange alternating atmosphere. At times it would feel light and cheerful, but on other occasions you could feel as if a heavy, oppressing pressure was bearing down on you. If you were alone, you'd start feeling uncomfortable. You'd feel slightly paranoid as if someone was watching you. One time I was about to open a closed door and got a distinct feeling that there was someone standing, in hunched stance, just behind the door. The feeling was just strong enough to make me hesitate opening the door, which is really silly considering that I was in my own house.

At first I thought it was just me, since in my youth I battled with clinical (diagnosed) depression and was well on my way to alcoholism before I got help. However, you'll never fully recover from the two. The dark cloud of depression, anxiety and the habit of making mountains out of molehills is always there.

Now that I think back, I also kept hearing strange murmuring sounds and clicks/taps, but I simply thought that the murmurings were my next-door neighbours talking or that the house was making noises when the walls and roof warmed up and cooled down. If I remember correctly, I had only a few cases of sleep paralysis, nightmares so bad that I couldn't control them (in my youth I did lucid dreaming and can still take control of most of my nightmares) and night-time anxiety attacks.

Nevertheless, visiting friends - some of them staying overnight - also began to comment on how strangely silent my house and the neighbourhood was and, more importantly, how "thick the air" (their words) sometimes got. As I mentioned, the house was brand new and is mechanically ventilated and air-conditioned. Sometimes there's such a strong draft that I have to turn down the ventilation. At the time I didn't make much of those comments.

However, when my wife (then: girlfriend) moved in, things got more active. I never said anything to her, but it later turned out that both of us heard occasional murmurings and she complained about the occasional heavy feeling in the house. She also reported seeing a ball of light shooting under a cabinet in our shower room, but I thought it had been a reflection from the mirror that's just opposite to the shower door. She also got freaked out by a door (leading to our backyard) opening and closing by itself. I was outside gardening and she had just come from the shower and was dressing up. She thought that I had just opened the door, seen her dressing up and closed the door so that people outside couldn't see inside. However, I had been nowhere near that door and didn't notice it opening and closing.

At the same time she said the door had moved, I had heard rather loud low murmurings in the garden. I can remember it, because I heard the low murmuring and felt strangely disoriented. I remember feeling oddly confused, watching our cherry tree and trying think of what could have made that sound.

Apart from the occasional heavy feeling inside, daytime events have been very rare.

Nights, however, became different. Instead of my usual sleep disturbances, I started waking up to shocking visions of a female face and figure floating near the ceiling and suddenly rushing at my face. Seeing it would jolt me out of bed thus also waking up my wife. I thought I had just not grown accustomed to sleeping next to someone.

I also had one more scarier vision that still troubles me to this day. I was sleeping on my side with my face towards my wife's face. I had fallen asleep, but woke up to see her staring at me and suddenly her mouth opened so wide that it was not humanly possible. It looks liked she was screaming, but there was no sound. I don't remember anything else, but my poor wife got a real scare. She later told me I had grabbed her shoulders hard, trying to push her away, and growled, "Don't come near me. I know who you are." Even as I am writing this, I'm feeling freaked out by this. I love my wife dearly and don't want to scare her or - even worse - hurt her. Fortunately it has never happened again. I do get the visions of the ghostly woman rushing at me from time to time and sometimes my nightmares are so grotesque (fleshy, slimy cancerous-like growths on walls or in furniture, deep, blackened necrotic wounds in my arms, legs or calves and so on) that they make me feel ill even the day after.

Recently we were visited by a wife's relative who's seriously into geomancy, spiritual healing and channelling. The moment she sat down on the couch, she started moving uncomfortably and soon she got up saying "Wow! These energies. Where are they coming from? Something's not right here." We had never said a word about our experiences to her, but she was visibly disturbed by something that she felt in our house. Later that day she did some exploring and claimed that our house has been built on ground that in distant past was a sacred grove where sacrifices were made by our ancestors who worshipped nature gods. She didn't say what kind of sacrifices, and I did some research on the history of the locale and sacred groves in our culture. In our culture, food, drink and animal sacrifices were common, but human sacrifices in Finland were extremely rare (if any). However, the ground on which our house is built used to be a bog and our ancestors punished severe crimes by drowning offenders in bogs.

So, I don't really know what to think about this. On a logical level I think this is nonsense. On an intuitive level, however, I feel that there is something strange going on. Too many coincidences with too many people who know nothing about our experiences. What prompted me to write this post was that I've been feeling the heavy atmosphere again for a week or so. The weather outside is nice and sunny, so it's not about feeling blue on a rainy day. I have also been waking up at around 3 am feeling angry and full of anxiety for no apparent external reason. Once I get up to get a glass of water, I feel that there's something in the dark watching me. I have had no nightmares or visions, but I thought that yesterday I heard that damned murmuring again.

Am I just being irrational and reading too much into random events and peoples' comments? Is there something in the ground or in the neighbourhood that is causing these feelings? It's a scientific fact that the old bog ground is releasing radon gases, which is one of the reasons why the house was built with such good ventilation. The building codes are very specific when building on a ground like this. Infrasounds generated by heavy machinery are another explanation for anxiety and heavy feelings. There is no heavy industry in the neighbourhood, but there is a nearby busy highway with constant heavy traffic including semi-trailer trucks. Or is there a "paranormal" explanation? Residual energies from the past ceremonies in the alleged sacred grove? Restless spirits of people who experienced the horrible death of being drowned in a bog?

A comment regarding that door opening and closing by itself. It has a stiff door damper mechanism just to prevent wind from slamming it shut. Opening and closing it requires quite a bit of force.

Thanks, although I hope that I won't have anything to report. However, the constant oppressive feeling that has lasted now for about a week or so has got me worried. Even if no activity happens, the heavy atmosphere is rather tiring in itself.

Interestingly, these peaks in oppression seem to coincide with the change in seasons. This year we're moving fast towards autumn now already in August. The previous peak in the oppressive atmosphere (and, then, in activity) was when the spring was turning into summer. The year before that it got more pronounced in the early autumn -- like this year.

It could, of course, be that we're both reacting to the change in seasons, but that doesn't explain why people visiting us are feeling it, too.

The borderline dream visions are also easy to explain as hypnagogic hallucinations.

However, if one wants to speculate on a supernatural explanation and accepts the "sacred grove" explanation, then this correlation with the changing seasons could be attributed to the periodically increased activity at the former grove (celebration of the spring and so on).

Another interesting line of thought could be to consider why the highest levels of oppression and activity so far coincided with the time my wife moved permanently in, and why my borderline dream visions always feature an aggressive female figure -- a figure that one time even superimposed it/herself on my sleeping wife. A psychological interpretation would be obvious (i.e. on some level my subconsciousness saw my wife as an intruder), but a paranormal interpretation would also be interesting to entertain. A jealous spirit? A family spirit from my or her side, objecting to us living together as an unmarried couple? Nonsense, of course, but entertaining.

It's interesting information and written clearly.. I would rather see a post like this with no pin, then some quickly hashed together info.

I'm definitely interested in hearing more on this. I have extreme dream states as well and wanted to say, I have had a similar dream looking over at my then girlfriend sleeping and all I saw was her staring at me with her face melting off..

I remember when I snapped awake it freaked her out too. I can clearly remember the image in my mind like it was a picture..

Thanks for the post and I will definitely check back.

Interesting read! but I am super sorry you and your wife are going through this. If the sensitive is correct, is sounds as though there is more going on than just a little ghostie passing through and you may need some professional help?
I am no shaman, but have had many anomalous experiences that have had me investigate how to deal with certain occurrences.

Even a professional can sometimes exacerbate the problem as they are coming in briefly and simply stirring the pot, but you are there full time..so I believe a few things you can do on a regular basis. can help.

I know it sounds new-agey, but sage burning. not just lighting some leaves and blowing it around but really smudging the house: get a good solid cloud of dense sage smoke in every room while saying prayers to what ever benevolent ascended master/angel you relate too, then air out the house.. be prepared for a lingering aroma..some believe that unless you really know what you are doing, this can make it worse, however..

also, become grounded..you can google grounding techniques:psychically as well as physically.

Marshall your fear..its your house and refuse to become fearful or startled.(most important, as I think they feed on this somehow) Laughter, lightness and fun. energies such as that do not like that environment. This is where its possible that your dealing with depression may have helped to usher in the energies? I know this, because I too have dealt with some depression and what it can draw in..

Believe it or not, music helps, especially live music..the happier the better. Parties help too..(a true evil presence with stick around through anything tho:(

I hope you feel free to vent here and dont listen to the trolls;) thanks for posting

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
OP here again (different computer, different IP).

The strong oppressive feeling has gone on unabated and it is taking a toll on our lives. My wife is starting to exhibit signs of depression and I'm constantly too tired to do anything when I get home.

Today I fell asleep on the couch while my wife was working on the computer in a separate room. When I was waking up - half awake, half asleep - I felt several bouts of strange sinking feeling, combined with outside pressure. It was as if something was trying to push itself in and me downwards at the same time.

The part of my brain that was awake and knew that I was still half asleep thought: "What a strange feeling in a dream". Then, I feel slightly deeper into the sleep and started seeing images. In the shallow dream-state I saw an image of me running out of the house feeling enraged. I was clenching my fists and thinking, I must go quickly so that I don't hurt my wife.

At that particular point, I realized again that I was dreaming and I pushed back: these are not my thoughts and feelings and I know that I am dreaming so stop it! I got control of the dream and decided to wake myself up.

Me and my wife haven't argued in a while and there are no big disagreements or tension between us. Once again, it's like the source of oppression is pushing in and trying to drive a wedge between me and my wife.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
I have been feeling inexplicably angry since last Saturday. Everything should be OK, but nevertheless I've got this undirected anger inside that just won't subside.

Last night I again woke up at around 3 am feeling angry. It was so bad that I couldn't get sleep until after half past four when I did a mental exercise: I imagined a white purifying light sweeping me clean of all the negative "mental filth" on me.

I don't know if this is related to the oppressive feeling at home, though. A cloud of doom/darkness seems to be hanging over me at work, too. It feels like there's something thick, nasty and violent accumulating in the air and that something's going to give soon - a bit like when a violent thunderstorm is about to break, but worse.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
The anger has passed and oppression has now lifted to some extent.

However, last weekend there was an interesting incident. Our friends with kids were visiting us. Kids (2- and 5-year old) were exploring every room in the house and at one point they came back acting strangely muted.

The older boy said that there was a ghost in the bathroom (again the bathroom!). We, of course, laughed it off so that the kids wouldn't be even more scared and asked them jokingly what kind of sounds does a ghost make. The younger child replied by making sound that mimicked growling or moaning.

Later on in the evening when our guests were leaving and outdoors clothes were being put on the 2-year old girl, she started looking and pointing to the dark kitchen and making the exact ghost sounds she had made earlier. Her mother asked "what's there?" and the child replied "ghost".

These things just keep adding up and every time it seems to be connected to the bathroom (the kitchen is adjacent to the bathroom)! I'm beginning to suspect that we do have some sort of a ghost in the house indeed. I'm not necessarily talking about a ghost person, but some sort of energy/infrasound that comes and goes and messes with human minds producing ghostly sensations at this location.

Some time when my wife is away, I'm going to sit down with a bottle of wine and have a chat with this "entity"...

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
Last night was a restless night.

I had trouble falling asleep even though I was dead tired when I went to bed with my wife. I finally fell asleep at around 3 am and woke up a few hours later after rather an unpleasant dream. I was lying in the bed just like I had done before falling asleep, except that I was floating slightly above the mattress. Then I started sliding back and forth over the bed at a rapidly increasing rate until I couldn't take it anymore and tried to scream. That woke me up.

It wasn't quite sleep paralysis, but in the dream I felt like I was "bound" and being moved at the will of some presence that I couldn't see. After I woke up, I had the usual chills and unreal feeling ("Am I really awake? Is it going to start again?") I get after dreams like this. My mouth was parched and I considered getting up for a glass of water, but I was too shaken to risk a trip to the kitchen (in my borderline sleep state my line of reasoning was: "if I'm still dreaming, I'll bump into something horrible on the way").

I fell asleep again only to see another unpleasant dream about being trapped in an underground shelter/bunker with hundreds of other people. Something unspeakable was coming for us from the surface and we decided to commit a mass suicide by flushing the bunker with nerve gas to prevent "it" (don't know what) from getting us, and also as a last resort attempt to kill it. I didn't feel fear. I felt sad but also totally confident and at ease with the decision - we were making the right decision. At the same time I was happy that my wife didn't have to die with us.

Yes, I know. Overly dramatic, somewhat Hollywoodesque and pretty standard stuff for a nightmare (in my dreams I've been in a nuclear fallout shelter many times, feeling the ground shake from roaring nuclear explosions above until a close hit buries/incinerates us), but this dream bothered me more. I think the earlier dream made me think that "here we go - it's messing with me again". The way how the latter dream made suicide look like it was the only right option for me, left me wondering whether "it" was messing with me again.

When I told my wife about my restless night, she said that she slept poorly as well. She had had disturbing dreams, too, and didn't want to discuss them. That, in itself, was very unusual of her.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
Once again the oppression has returned with the change of seasons. We got our first snow last week and the winter seems to be setting in. The air feels thick and heavy inside and we both feel these occasional waves of suffocating anxiety and vague hostility.

Last night I had hard time getting sleep - again. My mind was stuck on various problems I'm having at work. They're nothing unusual and usually I can easily compartmentalize my work and private lives, but now I just couldn't shake the looping negative thoughts. I finally fell asleep at around 2 am and dreamt of my old house.

In the dream I went to the upstairs bathroom (yes, again the bathroom). I switched on the fluorescent lights, but they kept flickering on and off as if the lamp was bad. I was standing in the doorway and between flashes of light and darkness, a female figure appeared in front of the handwashing basin, in front of the bathroom mirror.

She was lithe, wore jeans and a dark green haltertop, had two ponytails and appeared young, approximately 25-28 years of age. I knew she wasn't supposed to be there, so I tried asking her: "who are you?", but I couldn't quite get the words out and they came out garbled.

She turned to me and the skin on her bare arms and face caught my attention. It was extremely pale and heavily bruised and marbled from subcutaneous bleeding (I just knew this in the dream). I also knew she was dead and alive at the same time. She had a blank expression and started walking towards me.

She stood in front of me and, with a totally expressionless face, she grabbed my arms and started twisting them to my sides and back with a force that was totally out of proportion. It was like she was trying to break my elbows. While she was doing this, she came right up to my face and hissed. The hissing and the physiologically impossible configuration into which she had twisted my arms (it felt very uncomfortable, but not painful - I rarely if ever feel pain in my dreams) freaked me out.

I tried to free myself, but her grip was too strong. I tried to trip her, but she wouldn't budge. She opened her mouth (yet, the hissing continued) and I knew she was going to bite into my face.

At that point I woke up. It was about a quarter past 3 am. I spent a while reassuring myself that it was a dream, but the walls of reality felt wafer thin. I was afraid that if I move, she'll find me again. It didn't help that I could see that the bathroom door was slightly ajar. I am a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to open doors, and when I go to sleep, I routinely close all the doors that I can see from the bed. My wife even likes to me fun of my door ritual, so I'm pretty sure that the door was closed in the evening.

Uh. Dark times.

Now it has been almost four months since the last "event". The spring is coming and it will be interesting to see if we'll start seing more activity again. Whatever it is, it usually becomes more active with change of seasons.

I'm still intrigued by what the two visiting kids saw last year when they reported having seen a man in the shower/bathroom. Too bad I can't ask them as their parents really wouldn't like it.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
The spring is in full bloom and the oppressive feeling has returned. Earlier this week I had a series of supernaturally themed nightmares in one night: floating dead faces in darkness, a witch trying to control my mind and dead bodies floating in a lake in formation like tree trunks being floated to a mill. I slept fitfully, waking up approximately every two hours, and sweated profusely. At 4 am I woke up to my wife crying in her sleep. I woke her up and she just said that she had a bad dream.

No weird physical events, so far, but based on my earlier experiences, I'd expect something to happen sooner or later this month.

I've done some background research on the location. It is a site for the earliest known inhabiation in the region going back to the stone-age (about 9000 years).

In 1400s, a defensive line ran through the region, and there are still remnants of stone fortifications on the tops of nearby hills. I've always wondered what those stones were, but now I know.

The earliest Christian church near our home was built in 1400s, but before the arrival of Christianity the pagan tribes that lived here had sacred groves in the nearby woods. The groves were also used for handing out justice, and studies have revealed that the punishments did include death by drowning (in a swamp or lake).

The woods near our home are weird. The grow pine, birch and willow trees which is nothing unusual, but the trees are extremely twisted, often hugging the ground. Moreover, the bark on trees appear to have been "gnawed" by something - from the bottom to the top branches. If it were only one tree, I'd say that a lightning bolt has struck the tree and blown away the bark, but so many trees appear damaged in the same way that lightning doesn't explain it. Animals like elks eat tree bark, but they don't roam the woods here in suburbia.

It's also surprisingly quiet in the woods. There is almost no birdsong and in spite of the relatively sparse growth, external sounds are quickly muffled. There is only the sound of wind in the trees. The feeling you get in the woods is not oppressive, though. I'd describe it as more like "majestic" or even "sacred": you get the feeling that you should tread here with humility for this place is old. The feeling is excarbated by the natural state of the forest. Usually here in the suburbia the forests are maintained, almost manicured. For some reason, this forest has been left in its wild state.

Hi, i would like to let you know that it seems what you are experiencing is a thing called sleep paralysis while you are asleep.I have had this experience and its very frightning. It feels as if your being pinned down in bed and you also hallucinate and think that there is somebody in the room with you. There is a scientific explanation and its that while you sleep ur body goes into shut down mode to prevent you acting out ur dreams with body movements. normally b4 rem your body should wake up and come out of the paralysis so the dreamer is not aware, but in sleep parlysis your mind wakes up first and can feel the effect of the body feeling paralysed.. The oppression your feeling could be this. also it sounds that your unconsious mind is trying to tell you something. maybe you have had suffered trauma as a child and cant remeber, because the anger your feeling could be unexpressed anger as a child. Im taking from experience as your story is very similar to my own. i hope this helps and that it dont offend you.....

I'm directing my idea toward mental instability and insecurity. But this is extremely deep and buried fears. Not something that you know about yourself. Something that you don't know about yourself. Something hidden inside you. It's a fear that presets itself at opportune moments when you are most vulnerable. A voice is heard late at night when all is quiet. Why isn't it heard during the day or when you're happy? Because your mind knows a silly voice can't affect you in those moments, so it waits till the right time and condition, late at night when all is quiet and dark - to strike you. It's your own mind working against you because the timing is impeccable. Paranormality should happen anytime. Not only when you're most vulnerable. Imagine a place like Alaska - there's no night there for months on end - so can paranormal exist there? You can't get scared if you're with loved ones and there's enough daylight - so for me it's too coincidental that security and love is missing when terror strikes.

In our human world, there's movies, other people's influences, which create the fear "maybe one day it will happen to me" then it surely will happen because you've created the thought and sowed the seed - in your mind. It will grow one day and I'm an opportune moment, strike you and you will hurt, like you've never hurt before. But you have created it. And you can only end it.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
HI SIR, MY NAME IS JEFFERY AND FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU, I THINK. I SAY I THINK BECAUSE YOUR STORY SOUNDS SO INSANELY SIMILIAR TO WHAT I AM EXPERIENCING IN MY HOME DOWN TO THE BATHROOM SITUATION. ALSO WE SEEM TO HAVE BOTH VERY SIMILIAR PAST LIFE STORIES AS WELL.HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO DO ANYTHING THAT HAS RELIEVED SOME OF THIS FROM HAPPENING TO YOU AND YOUR WIFE? THE THING THAT HAS ME MOST CONFUSED IS THAT WE HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THIS HOME FOR OVER 3 YEARS AND JUST THE LAST 5 OR 6 MONTHS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS DIDN'T START IMMEDIATELY.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home
Hi all. Here's an update.

Gautama: It did happen during the day, too. The balls of light that my wife saw, strange mutterings in the garden and bathroom, and the door that opened and closed by itself (the door with the rather stiff gadget that's designed to prevent wind from moving the door). I do get nightmares when under stress, but I don't recall any particular tension during those times when I had the nightly visions.

The change of seasons has previously sparked more incidents, but this autumn seems to be going well. No visions and no feeling of oppression.

Meanwhile, I've studied the history of our location and it is, indeed, very old. The earliest signs of habitation go back to the stone-age and the first church was built in 1400s. The area is rife with ancient military fortifications (hence, the old stone formations I've found in the nearby woods), but there have not been real conflicts in the area apart from the battles during the Finnish civil war in 1918.

A more interesting find was that there is, indeed, a very old grove in the small bog nearby. The area actually gets its name from it. There is no information as to whether the grove or the bog were used to bury people or not. Drowning people into bogs was an old form of capital punishment here, but dead people were also buried into bogs. Especially women were subject to this kind of treatment and all "apparitions" I've seen have been angry females.

Since the activity in the house seems to focus on the bathroom, one could speculate that the underground flow of water (in and out) attracts something.

I'm going to have the Radon-levels checked this winter.

Re: Oppression, anxiety, dream-state visions and ghost-like phenomena at home

I've had several bouts of sleep paralysis before and most of my nightly terrrors did not involve paralysis at all. The only exception is the levitation/shaking experience at night, and that I am willing to attribute to sleep paralysis.

I think you'd be better off getting a good night's sleep by taking a sleeping aid ... Given the high rate of mental issues in your native land and your previous pathology (no offence) maybe you'd experience some benefit from anti-psychotic sedatives.

Not sleeping is the worst thing when you're already feeling anxious or are prone to it. (Oh and, dude, quit the liquor ... but isn't that supposed to be very expensive over there anyway?)

I find it baffling that a PhD in biochemistry would rather walk the path of the paranormal, than objectively analysing the situation.

You're life has been quite stressful I presume these past few years ... A job with responsibility, new home, a wife ...

Get out some more, get some vitamin D, take it easy, take a good old Suomi sauna, shoot some deer ...

And if that wouldn't help, maybe it's time to move. I bet you've got possibilities abound.

GOOD LOOK!
