I Let My 4 Kids Play Outside, On a Sunny Saturday. The Cops Wrote Up a Report

Believe it or not, whenever I'm working on my project car and my daughter is helping, an unmarked will park near my house and sit there. I dare a mofo to do that to me.

No neighborhood is 100% safe anymore. You should be out there watching them. Just my two cents. You never know when some piece of shit will come take your kids. Sadly the only safe place for unattended children is a backyard.

Edit. I'm not talking about the whole police thing. In our town a man tried to take 5 kids from diff schools last year and two days ago a man tried to put a 14 girl waiting at soccer practice in his car. I'm just saying its not very safe for kids anymore. I don't get why everyone is jumping on my back.

i cleaned out my car once on a side street of a neighborhood where it connected to the main side of downtown and a cop literally parked and watched me clean out my car. WTF. our freedoms are being taken.

I recently revisited my old neighborhood where I grew up. I live in a different state now.

There was, and still is, a very big park a couple blocks from my old house. We used to play there a lot. There were never a lot of kids there at once, but there were usually some. Kids would go over to each others' house. Once I remember walking too far when I was very young, going too far and getting lost, then having the cops come and drive me home.

Of course no record was kept or anything, they were there to "protect and serve" and that's what they did.

I'd go off and mom would have no worry. We sort of lived at our friends' houses.

Now there were no kids in the park, no kids wandering the neighborhood. There was a lemonade stand at one house where the girls that lived in the house were selling lemonade, and mom was keeping close watch on it.

Times have changed.

I parked on a side road where folks go to bike and walk, came back and citizen rat-patrol was checking out the car.
That irks me.

Besides, the "field adjacent to" the OP's house is obviously not the OP's property.

The children were on someone else's property, and the police officer had every right to ask them what they were doing there.

For all we know, the owner of the field may have complained about trespassers.

and i thought the world was coming to an end when our government made bicycle safety helmets mandatory for kids (not that any kid outside the city actually wears it).

that is fucked up; kids were playing.

when i was a kid, we made working longbows and crossbows, and practiced them in whatever field we fancied.

They only do that because they are the ones that have a guilty conscience.

I was eating my lunch in my car where I work and a cop came over and asked me what I was doing.....He then started telling me how the office had been broken into...They look for trouble.

I used to do this too. this was about 18 years ago though...

Legal liability.

If the kids get hurt on someone else's property, the property owner will get sued for the expenses.

Most property owners do not want kids playing on their property for that reason.

Nothing against the kids having fun. It's just too much of a financial risk to let happen.

They should come to my courtyard in my building in Toronto , Canada . I have at least 5 families doing that and we live in one of the difficult areas full of crack addicts and so on. They but in , and bother good parents and allow lousy once keep and beat up their kids. In the end social services destroy kids and their lives!

Cops dont need to wonder about kids playing outside...

I stated the reality of the situation. No ideology involved.

Our legal system allows anybody to sue anyone for anything.

An open field likely qualifies as "an attractive nuisance" (legal term meaning, essentially, that kids are attracted to it).

Kid gets hurt, property owner gets sued. Hopefully he has umbrella liability insurance (has nothing to do with umbrellas, means it covers just about everything).

This is reality. Nothing good or right about it.

The reality is property owners have to protect themselves financially, by forbiding trespass -- even by cute kids just playing.

kids can not go outside anymore...so lets make laws about what they can and can not eat to fix the over weight issues that come ...well when kids do not play outside!

WONDERING ABOUT.....when cops wonder nothing good comes.

let him wonder about it over coffee back at the station....no need to freaking write a formal report about some kids playing....unless playing has now become illegal!

the only thing cops should be wondering about is WHY are all the kids NOT playing outside anymore! this should be a good discussion back at the station house!

But a good parent would first ask the kid what the hell they were doing that got them hurt.

Now if the property owner did something stupid, like leave fireworks or didn't take off the refrigerator door, didn't repair the sidewalk - then there could be a reason to place some of the blame on them. But only SOME and it still wouldn't make them responsible for anything bad that happened.

First onus is on the kids for being dumb. Second is on the parents for not instilling fear of being stupid into their kids and for not teaching them to respect other people property.

I really can't think of anything that would be a property owners fault and sue worthy.

Which reminds me of the stupid snow removal laws - if you don't clear your sidewalk and someone falls and gets hurt, you have no liability. If you make an honest attempt to do the right thing and clear and salt the walkway and someone falls - you are liable. When reasonable logic says - it's winter, it's snowy and icy - be careful walking!! If you slip and fall...it's the weather's fault and yours - not a home or business owner's.

Really. What world did you grow up in. Certainly not the one I grew up in, that I am 100% sure of.

My curfew was the porch light.

My parents called my name, not my cell.

I played outside with friends, not online. And we were allowed out to play without our parents being there. We were even allowed out of their sight from morning till night.

If I didn't eat what was cooked for dinner, then I didn't eat.

Sanitizer didn't exist, but you COULD get your mouth washed out with soap.

Getting dirty was ok, and

Neighbors LOVED YOU as much as your parents did....and they showed it by reprimanding you just like they would.

You didn't want to go home if you knew the teacher was going to call because your parents were going to punish you much worse than what the school could do. And there were no explanations or excuses.

And we drank water from a garden hose and survived
