The girls were standing by the tracks when the train passed. As it derailed, they were both buried in coal. Very sad.

I did a Google Earth search on the Main Street site. Been through there many times. I can't imagine the mess there is right now.

In the WTOP article above, it mentions the crew of the train saying the emergency brake system kicked in, and that they didn't do it. Interesting.

I grew up around trains. When you hear that train a-coming, you get clear. Drunk or not, they had to hear it. Two or more CSX engines pulling 80 cars, you hear it coming. They grew up there, as well, and should have known better. Doesn't make it any less tragic, though.
