I appreciate your response AC of Canada. I think maybe you are not familiar with the road construction going on down here everywhere in the lower 48.

Also I am older and it is difficult for me to find construction info on AAA or even google maps. I am not as internet savvy as many who can quickly plot a route in real time.

What kind of phone do you have?

there's a very useful and cheap ap called TeleNav which you can down load to your smart phone or iphone, and it is better than a GPS

It also gives traffic and congestion alerts and gives alternate routes

My wife recently drove down from Canada to Texas, I'll ask her if she has any suggestion

hang in there OP

I've made the drive as far as St. Louis. From Dallas take 69 across Oklahoma into Joplin. Then its highway 44 the rest of the way.

Weekends are the worst time to drive because there's lots of traffic.

If you are traveling alone...I would stay out of Arkansas and Tennessee. The rest stops can be creepy. (Been there...done that)

Best of luck to you...and have a safe trip!

No problem...The drive from Dallas to Joplin is pretty easy. I dont know how many miles you plan to drive each day but you might want to stay in Joplin on your first night. There are plenty of hotels and its a nice city. Try to time your trip so you do not hit St. Louis in rush hour (anytime after about 3 pm- 7pm) Make sure you take 270 around the outside of the city. Then you pick up 55. I can't help you much past that point.

I forgot to mention...If you have any extra money you might want to pick up a Garmin GPS...You can get one pretty cheap now with traffic and lifetime maps. I couldnt get out of my own way if I didn't have a Garmin.

Here is a link to the ones at Walmart.

Thank you so much! I was not sure if Joplin would be about right, but you have helped me confirm this. I'm planning on driving about 7 hours each day (taking an hour off in the middle).

I wonder if I should aim for Chicago on day 2?

Or possibly not quite that far. Maybe Bloomington, IL.

You could make it to Chicago but I would not push it that hard. Chicago is a big city and a big mess...I would stay south of it and tackle the Chicago area in the morning. I drove from Springfield Missouri to Chicago once and was pretty tired when I got there. (I was much younger then too) But...the farm country between St. Louis and Chicago sure was pretty.

Do you have AAA coverage? It gives a great sense of safer traveling. I recommend the extended-mileage towing coverage. I had my tranny go out once in Kansas City and got towed all the way back to eastern Iowa, no charge. Would have cost me $500 if I had to pay directly.

It is not that expensive considering what they offer. They will even send out a tow truck to give you five gallons of free gas if you run out of gas. Free flat tire change. They will also come for free and unlock your car if you lock your keys in.

Take it from another senior, AAA is a must have these days if you roam from home. If you are sitting stranded on the side of the highway, it's a REALLY GOOD thing to have someone to call that will come right away and help you.

Great idea AC...I forgot to mention that. They will even draw up and send you those trip things that show where every rest stop is and all the roads that are under construction.

I've used them a lot in the past but now I just rely on my Garmin. But the garmin will not help if your are broke down in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, I have it, but the trip tic does not "divide" your trip like it should. The segment division is very confusing.

I'll just buy a damn atlas and the Garmin, that is a good idea.

It is strange how they needed so much prompting .....i.e. "the sun rises in the east and sets in the west" and "Where is the sun at noon?

I think partly this is because they played inside so much of their lives in Dallas.

Midland Michigan.... sounds like Dow Chemical & not much else...)))

You'll probably take I-55 to I-80 to I-94 & stay south of Chicago.

I-80 can be a real nightmare due to construction...

Well Midland is where my remaining family is, but I do love the fall and winter. It is a nice little town, a little provincial and somewhat narrow minded and prejudiced I have noticed, but no crime to speak of.

It is a company town. Sugar Land, Tx has a similar history probably, but with less ground and water contamination.
