We live in a “never-ending cycle” – I believe that this is what’s coming to visit the USA again !!

The most visible evidence of how dry the 1930s became was the dust storm. Tons of topsoil were blown off barren fields and carried in storm clouds for hundreds of miles. Technically, the driest region of the Plains – southeastern Colorado, southwest Kansas and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas – became known as the Dust Bowl, and many dust storms started there. But the entire region, and eventually the entire country, was affected.
The Dust Bowl got its name after Black Sunday, April 14, 1935. More and more dust storms had been blowing up in the years leading up to that day. In 1932, 14 dust storms were recorded on the Plains. In 1933, there were 38 storms. By 1934, it was estimated that 100 million acres of farmland had lost all or most of the topsoil to the winds. By April 1935, there had been weeks of dust storms, but the cloud that appeared on the horizon that Sunday was the worst. Winds were clocked at 60 mph. Then it hit.

The drought years of the 1930s forced individual farmers and lawmakers at all levels of government to face fundamental questions. What kind of agriculture can be practiced in a semi-arid environment? And how can we restore land that farming practices had damaged and avoid damaging the land in the future?
The statistics tell the story.
• Normally, the state of Nebraska averages around 20 inches of rainfall a year.
• In 1930, Nebraska got 22 inches of rain, and the state's corn crop averaged 25 bushels per acre.
• In 1934, Nebraska saw the driest year on record with only 14.5 inches of rainfall. The state's corn crop dropped even more to only 6.2 bushels per acre.
In other words, between 1930 and 1934 rainfall dropped 27.5 percent, and as a result corn crop yields dropped over 75 percent.

Ummm... just climbed out from under my rock. LOL

I certainly hope you're right... but it doesn't seem that way. I'm in Ohio, and the draught has all but destroyed our corn crop... the animals will suffer for this... prices will soar, and if we don't get normal rain soon... I don't know what will happen. This is agricultural country and we depend on our crops for our income.

The thing that concerns me right now, is that in Missouri they're drilling emergency wells all over the place !!

What happens when the aquifers all go dry from this ????

Interesting article here:

More than 800 requests for aid have already been made to Missouri from farmers who are struggling with the ongoing heat wave and drought.

Early last week, Gov. Jay Nixon announced that $2 million would be available to help farmers drill wells or expand irrigation, but demand for assistance was so high that Nixon announced another $5 million later in the week.

By Tuesday morning, 818 projects had been approved for funding assistance, Nixon's office said.

I'm afraid you're right. The ONE good thing we learned from the "last round" of heat and draught... is that we are more conservative in our agricultural land use.

I really don't think it will help much, though... in the long run.

Our ground is dry and cracked... I don't know how deep those cracks are ?????

Can all of this cause a collapse - sink holes ???

Glad I've spent the past 3 years learning bio-intensive, organic gardening methods that focus on water conservation, seeking out heat and drought tolerant plant varieties, and growing almost all of our own produce. If the OP is correct, these are going to be some really bad times. I don't think most realize how bad this could get.

Not only there is a much bigger population now, population back then, even rich folks were more resilient and down to earth than nowadays. Even in rural areas, how many people today know how to grow crops the traditional way: a family works the land with horses and plough. That knowledge has disappeared. A farmer today relays in tractors with gps, fuel from the gas station and modern equipment. And that´s the rural people! in the city all people can do is run after the latest ipod and tweet.
The combined effect of an economic crysis, with a environmental crysis is going to cause a massive die off.

Thread: Thoughts on creating a RURAL COMMUNITY vision, Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish"

I am not trying to self promote, but this thread is a vision I tender for rural agricultural communities and my experience with my community.

There is a spiritual element to the thread as there is in my community.

Grounding in a community (perhaps faith/kindred/family & friends will be critical to making it through the times coming.

BTW I am not offering an invite to my community... this is my attempt to bear witness to the blessing and vision I have received.... no forms to fill out or application... just information for a vision.

I live in st Charles county Missouri in the middle of farm land. it is bad here. we have cracks in our back yard almost six feet deep. theyre all over my yard...so many i cant let my kids run around. and since they started cutting all the DEAD corn...we watch dust devils across the street go on for hours. Because of that i now have a horrible sinus infection. and the soybeans in my back yard are barely hanging on for life. and today...i looked out my window and thought we were gonna get rain because the sky was a little brown. but i was wrong....its not rain....the sky is tinged brown because of all the dust. its pretty eerie. i am lucky to have a well paying job....but...my job wont last forever. i take care of an elderly man and hes not gonna live forever so im saving as much as i can.
