Two years ago I worked at "Mom and Pop" shop so there was NO human resources department
The owner's wife as human resources.

I was going to be married and was making wedding plans to have an outdoor wedding that summer.

They fired me for no reason 2 months before my wedding.

I was good friends with one of the employees there....

(The owner's did not know we were girl_friends > we talked earlier on and decided to keep it quiet we knew each other before this job) hf

Well, my friend told me that after I was fired; the owner's wife laughed up a storm and

Said..."Ha ha ha I bet she will not get married now, her fiance will dump her because she doesn't have a job...ha ha ha

My friend told me the details in confidence that the owner's wife fired me for no reason

Only because she hated me for some reason and did not want to see me get married. The owner's wife thought that my

NOW HUSBAND would dump me because I did not have a job.

This is quite ridiculous. My husband LOVES me and did not care either way.

*****WHat kind of people do this***???

Do I have any legal action I can take?

I did a great job for these as******s and they obviously fired me for some kind of personal reason.

THe owner's had a homely daughter who was dumped by her boyfriend a few months before I was fired.

This is one possibility> the owner's wife was jealous I was getting married ....

Depends on the state you are in, In most states we have Right to work laws, which in laymens terms means a company can fire you for any reason whatsoever wihtout any explanation or stated reason. If you knew the owners wife didnt like you and had it out for you, you should have resigned from the posistion and told her you dont work for people like her.
Fact are important, They should be presented first, opinions will vary.

Re: Two years ago I worked at "Mom and Pop" shop so there was NO human resources department
she probably figured that you would be getting paid maternity leave in a few months after you got married. Most states have laws that they have to accommodate you during this time.

the bottom line is that the woman is probably just evil. The homely daughter may or may not have had a spell over what happened to her and you were going to get married, so that could have had some influence, like she might have done a favor for her daughter because you had a man and she didn't.

we out here have no way to really know, but people everywhere really seem to be strange, non-empathetic, greedy, nasty little people these days. I don't like much of the current attitudes.

Thanks

I will forget. The harsh memories come back every now and then

because I am a very nice person and never play games: I am a

"what you see is what you get" type

And when I was hired they seemed like really nice down to earth people

I am just having "flashbacks" I guess....

I did a lot for them ; extra project above and beyond my job

Thanks to all those with nice responses

You are all correct

I will just forget and move on

But like I said, I have weak moments when I feel like>

I think they can fire you for any reason with a few exceptions. The reason you proposed is a legal reason.

The exceptions are if you're fired because of racial or sex discrimination. Maybe also if for health reasons or for age, though it's harder to win those.

In practical terms, if you're fired because you're a woman, or black or hispanic or native american, you can sue. But if you're fired because you're a man or white or asian, you can't even sue under that law -- "reverse discrimination" and they laugh it out of court or just bury your case.

So if you're a white woman, the only chance would be to show that she fired you because you're not a man.

Most states are "Right to work" and as others have said, basically a company can dismiss you for any reason they choose and there is no protection for the employee.

There is good and bad things in the right to work laws...mostly bad. It allows a company to do what it needs to do to remain profitable without unions protecting less than productive workers...but many employers use it to strong arm workers and pay crappy wages. There was a time Unions did great things for workers, but they eventually became corrupt and lost their value and power.

Did you discuss or plan your wedding while on the clock? I know it's easy to get excited at this time in your life and maybe she felt you were too distracted. Just a thought.

Not to worry though. Mean people generally get what is coming to them...what goes around comes around...you shit on people...eventually you will be shat upon yourself.

Then you're completely out of luck. Your job was given to another female, so you won't win on sex discrimination. They may have done that fully aware that it would shield them from a discrimination suit, and it was an effective defense.

Even in states without "right to work" laws, the only difference is that bargaining-unit (union) employees have certain other rights. These days it's rare that anyone anywhere (except SEIU, who are a pain in the neck) have any collective bargaining rights.

No

I think the owner's wife and the owner where just psychos and the wife became jealous of the fact I was getting married. The wife met my now husband.

I don't mean to brag but my husband is a physically nice looking man and has a nice personality.

Her daughter was just dumped by a boyfriend and I think the mother was just insanely jealous.

This is what I think.

In hindsight, you probably realised that just by being there, your presence, was causing them pain in that they were reminded more constantly if that is even possible, of the failed romance that their daughter had.

I'm wondering if the jilted daughter had set a date and could it have been the same time as your wedding? Did their daughter find a new beau?

Being a small place, this was unavoidable (the hurt feelings). Even big companies have small departments that seem like "mom & pop" stores. I've seen some painful situations like your's only involving pregnancies versus infertility/miscarriages, and it can get pretty tense with people running to the restroom to cry all day.
