For real! I wouldnt eat any eggs that only cost $2. Those hens are definitely fed antibiotic hopped up gmo grain. if you are not producing your own food then a good diet should be a significant portion of your income.

The cheap stuff is still the stuff that is bad for you... ten for a dollar hamburger helper, top ramen, 25 cents a bit... cheap ass nutritionless bread... 89 cents.. I could go on... to eat well these days one has to make a lot of money... In fact, I think this is why so many americans are fat.... can only afford cheap ass carbs... spaghetti, ramen, mac and cheese.. hamburger helper, I mean really... veggies are expensive ... and so is even chicken.. if you have kids, one 6 dollar chicken isn't going to go far... people are eating too many carbs because they are cheapest.. honestly... Veggies are great, but most don't fill the belly... at least not for long... protein has just gone thru the roof lately... I have been eating a lot of tuna lately since it is cheap... 68 cents a pop.. I add it to my ramen and mac and cheese... Hard to eat really well these days unless you make a lot of money.... me, I live on $700 a month and some food stamps... disabled.. it's hard.

I know for a fact that the staple things I buy goes up a little bit each week. It has been doing this for months now and getting worse. I once able to spend around 150.00 a week and it last. I now spend around 200 and still have to buy a few additional things before the week is up.
I've thought the same thing about I don't see how some people make it. My husband complains about how much we're spending now. I told him how everything just keeps going up. It's very scary and depressing. I see a lot of people shaking their heads and murmuring about the prices. Unless, your wealthy or get a lot of food stamps your not going to be able to eat like we did in the past.

Friend of mine was working for a private organization that provides some monetary benefits to the poorest of the poor, most of which were homeless. It was her job to allocate money. Before applicants were given a monthly allocation, they had to partake in some brief classes about responsible spending habits. For instance, not spending the money on alcohol or cigarettes, and instead of unhealthy meals, they were promoting nutritious foods - produce in particular.

We're talking about super poor people, many of which have completely used up their government assistance.

Nutritious food just isn't going to cut it for these folk. Realistically, why spend a couple bucks on a bag of salad, when a king size snickers bar costs half as much and would actually give you more protein and might actually curb a hunger pain.

To add, many so called nutritious meals are cooked. One doesn't have too many options cooking when they're living on the streets.

I understand to that cigarettes can in some cases offset the pain of true hunger. And for that matter, why buy a bottle of water or juice, when alcohol can actually keep a person warm when you're living on the freezing streets in winter. As awful and addictive as those two things can be to a person's well being, many don't see any way to live without them.

I digress a bit, maybe too much so, but you're absolutely right - The poorer you are, the less options you have to be eating anything healthy. All you can do is make do with what you can afford and what will fill your stomach and try to be smart with the minimal choices you have to make that dollar stretch.

Yes it is crazy, I try to make everything from scratch. Avoid processed food, grow veggies and herbs in summer can, dry and freeze all I can. Have a big basement, this winter I am setting up tables and lights and I'm growing my own for the winter it will be great to have veggies that aren't 6-8 weeks old, can share with friends and neighbors and it will help with SAD disorder we all get in the winter. Think even with the increase in electricity it will still be safer, cheaper and fresher than buying produce from the store. Don't eat red meat, caught lots of salmon canned, smoked and froze it. Don't eat pork, foul occasionally, do buy organic eggs I have learned to become very creative with lots of spice, bread dough, pie crusts, home made pasta, brown rice, etc. Big Circle of friends we all share, take turns with dinner so we don't get cabin fever or bored with our own cooking. lol

Organic foods, though not all Organic labels are legit., contain far less toxins/antibiotics/pesticides/fertilizers and are non-GMO and not radiated by definition. Ask yourself: what price should one be willing to pay to put the healthiest grade food into one's body? If you don't have your health; you have nothing.

My point is this...
Spent $200 at the grocery store and barely come home with anything.
How do people do it?
I know what I make...and there are alot of people who make alot less.
Are these people now getting priced out of food?
Will they all have to go to the government for food stamps?
Is this what the government wants?
 Quoting: Butterfly girl

I hope its not what they want...its what they might get if the prices keep going up like they are. I use coupons on whatever I possibly can and might even go to 2 different stores to get the better deal. Otherwise, we mostly eat what's on sale that week. We wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise with the prices.
