Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
Super Typhoon Bolaven now has sustained winds of 146 mph and gusts to 188 mph. It is expected to hammer down on the small island of Okinawa, Japan where 7 military installations have almost 50,000 military, family members, civilians and contractors await the impending storm. The center of the storm is projected to pass within 5 nautical miles of Kadena Airbase, the largest of the installations. The storm which has grown to over 700 miles across in size will rival all previous storms in the last 13 years. Okinawa is now starting to feel the effects and the full strength of Bohevan is expected to start approximately 1600hrs on Sunday.

There is a second storm right behind Bohevan, Typhoon Tembin, which is expected to also hit Okinawa 24 hrs after Bohevan passes. Typhoon Tembin is currently a strong Cat 2 typhoon. I imagine the second Cat 2 Typhoon will seem like a light breeze after Bohevan passes. Okinawa is 13 hours ahead of EST.

Okinawa first...next stop Korea!

1:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, Japan time: We’re almost there: sustained 30-mph winds and 55-mph gusts are occurring even as I type this, and the worst is still yet to come. Okinawa remains in Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 1-C; expect that to change momentarily. Sustained 58-mph winds and greater are now forecast for between 1:30 p.m. today and 7 a.m. Monday, with peak 132-mph sustained winds and 161-mph gusts forecast for 6 p.m. Keep it buttoned down and stay safe!

Powerful Typhoon Bolaven nears Japanese island of Okinawa, residents told to stay indoors

By Malcolm Foster, The Associated Press August 26, 2012 3:00 AM

TOKYO - The strongest typhoon to approach Okinawa in several years was bearing down on the southern Japanese island on Sunday as residents were told to stay indoors and warned its strong gusts could overturn cars and cause waves of up to 12 metres (40 feet).

Slow-moving Typhoon Bolaven was centred about 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Okinawa and was expected to pass over the island Sunday evening, dumping as much as 500 millimeters (20 inches) of rain over a 24-hour period, weather officials said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said wind speeds near the centre of the typhoon were about 180 kph (112 mph), with extremely strong gusts reaching 252 kilometres per hour (155 mph).

Those gusts could knock over telephone poles and even overturn cars, while waves around the island could top 12 metres (40 feet), public broadcaster NHK warned.

PAGASA: Igme a typhoon again, may return in 24-48 hours
August 26, 2012 2:32pm

Typhoon Igme (Tembin) has intensified and may return to Philippine territory in the next 24 to 48 hours, state weather forecasters warned Sunday afternoon.

In an advisory, PAGASA said Igme, which weakened after making landfall on Taiwan and exited the Philippines as a tropical storm on Saturday, is again a typhoon.

"Typhoon Igme (Tembin) was at 460 km northwest of Laoag City and still outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). This typhoon may re-enter the PAR within the next 24 to 48 hours," it said in a 1 p.m. advisory.

I wonder if they moved all the aircraft to Andersen on Guam since Osan in Korea is next in line with this storm. People in the states are not paying much attention to Bolaven. I guess they do not understand how much of our military strength is being effected.

I'm always informed on what's going on with the 7th fleet but don't know much about the Air Force Kadena in Okinawa is the largest Air Force base in the pacific I also believe they have a USMC detachment. I can tell you that no 7th fleet ship sorties have been order because Yokuska is too from Okinawa and wont be affected. Any Air Force experts on GLP does anybody know what type of hangers they have at Kadena?

Typhoon Bart claimed at least two lives on Okinawa and brought over 710 mm (28 inches) of rain to the island.[54] Kadena Air Base was badly damaged by the typhoon with over $5 million of damage on the base.[55]

Looks like "Bolaven" becomes stronger ..

58 min ago, CNN

"There's no one on the streets in the town which I'm in," Reynolds said. "This is only going to get worse over the next five, six, seven hours, because the storm itself is quite a way offshore."

Storm surges are expected to be a major problem for the Okinawa area. Highways on low-lying barrier islands could be completely washed out, with surges at the coast expected at about 8 meters (26 feet) high.

More than 400,000 people in the area live in elevations between zero and 50 meters.
