Forecasters are predicting slow-moving Typhoon Bolaven could be the strongest storm to strike the island in more than 50 years.

State broadcaster NHK said gusts could overturn cars, while waves around the island could reach 12m (40ft).

Tropical Storm Isaac, back over warm ocean waters, lashed Cuba with winds and rain as it swept toward the Florida Keys, where it was expected to strike on Sunday as a minor hurricane. The storm left six dead in Haiti, still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, and at least three missing in the Dominican Republic after battering their shared island of Hispaniola on Saturday.

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
On Sunday evening, Bolaven was carrying sustained winds of 213 kilometers (132 miles) per hour, with gusts reaching 259 kilomeers per hour (161 mph) -- the highest since Typhoon Naha in 1956.

"The typhoon is producing wave heights of 16 meters high, so the possibility is there for a storm surge of 8 to 10 meters high on the coastline. Wind gusts will be strong enough to not only uproot or down trees and power lines, but could flip automobiles.

"Okinawa is 100 kilometers (62 miles) long. The size of Bolaven's eye is roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) in width.
This means many residents could experience the eye passing over them; unfortunately, that means putting up with the strongest winds the storm can produce, followed by a calm period with a brief clearing of the skies overhead, then another chaotic period of damaging winds that will be blowing in the opposite direction of the previous winds."

Rainfall totals could top 500 mm (20 inches) in 24 hours, said Sater.

The typhoon, the 15th of the season, was expected to continue into the East China Sea and then into the Yellow Sea, possibly affecting southern coastal areas of South Korea by Tuesday, Japanese weather officials said.

There are actually TWO typhoons side by side right now - Tembin and Bolaven. If you know where to look, you'll see they are on a collision course over China in the next few days. Perfect Storm.

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
- Typhoon Bolaven is a powerful storm and is battering Okinawa with tropical storm force winds on Aug. 26 as it nears the island. Bolaven is expected to cross the northern part of Okinawa later today.

On Aug. 26 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT),Typhoon Bolaven as just 70 nautical miles (80.5 miles/120.6 km) east-southeast of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. It was located near 25.9 North latitude and 128.9 East longitude. It was moving to the northwest at 8 knots (9.2 mph/14.8 kmh) and had maximum sustained winds near 115 knots (132.3 mph/213 kmh). Tropical Storm-force winds extend 230 nautical miles (264.7 miles/426 km) out from the center, making Bolaven a monster storm, about 460 nautical miles (529.4 miles/ 851.9 km) in diameter. That's close to the distance from Boston, Mass. to Pittsburgh, Pa.

Here is a tracking map.

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
The strongest typhoon to hit Okinawa in several years lashed the southern Japanese island and surrounding areas Sunday, injuring four people and cutting off power to about 30,000 households.

Residents were told to stay indoors and warned that the storm's powerful winds could overturn cars and cause waves of up to 40 feet.

The center of slow-moving Typhoon Bolaven was expected to pass over the island Sunday night, dumping as much as 20 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, weather officials said.

Wow...Thanks for posting that video.

Look at the size of those waves and vertical rain. To most people it just looks like an average day in the tropics. For me, who has weathered more than my fair share of Typhoons and Hurricanes it brings back some pretty haunting memories.

That video reminds me of Typhoon Omar. We spent 24 hours locked inside our concrete bunker with no power, water, or contact with the outside world. I can still close my eyes and hear the unnerving sound of the wind howling outside. Guam took a direct hit. The backside of the eye wall was the worst part of the storm. The winds where so strong that water was blowing through our huge wooden front door. I don’t mean through the cracks, it was seeping through the pores in the wood.

The good news is, they know how to build for those types of storms in the pacific. Our house was made from pre-cast concrete with reinforced rebar built to withstand 200 mph winds. We lost a chain link fence and a couple of car windows but that’s all. It was the weeks without power and water afterwards that was the problem.

I’m sure our military will be just fine but its going to be one heck of a week mopping up.

Published: August 24, 2012

2:25 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, Japan time: Okinawa entered Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2 at 2:20 a.m.

Typhoon Bolaven’s forward speed has slowed to just 6 mph northwest, about 450 miles southeast of Okinawa. That’s not good; means the storm is nourishing itself with warm sea-surface temperatures that Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts say will strengthen it to near Category 5-equivalent status.

That will mean sustained 150-mph winds and 185-mph gusts at its center for about 24 hours as it makes its way toward Okinawa, fat and monstrous, with closest point of approach forecast for 15 miles north of Kadena Air Base at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Needless to say, expect upgraded Tropical Cyclone Conditions of Readiness as this thing approaches, with a lengthy lockdown that at this point could last from midnight Saturday to 2 p.m. Monday.

Here’s the latest forecast wind timeline from Kadena’s 18th Wing Weather Flight:

Sustained 40-mph winds – 6 a.m. Saturday.
Sustained 58-mph winds – midnight Saturday.
Maximum 144-mph winds and 178-mph gusts, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Winds diminishing below 58 mph – 2 p.m. Monday.
Winds diminishing below 40 mph – 7 p.m. Monday.
Winds diminishing below 35 mph – 9 p.m. Monday.

I can’t emphasize enough: This one is a bad one. Okinawa could potentially take a pounding as bad as it’s seen since Typhoon Bart in 1999, whose winds were equal to those forecast by Kadena’s weather flight this time.

Since the actual people of Okinawa are well prepared for such things, unlike the trash of the US coastline, we can only hope Kadena is pushed into the ocean where the devil worshipers and rapists belong.
