Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
By Dave Ornauer
Published: August 24, 2012

2:25 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, Japan time: Okinawa entered Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2 at 2:20 a.m.

Typhoon Bolaven’s forward speed has slowed to just 6 mph northwest, about 450 miles southeast of Okinawa. That’s not good; means the storm is nourishing itself with warm sea-surface temperatures that Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts say will strengthen it to near Category 5-equivalent status.

That will mean sustained 150-mph winds and 185-mph gusts at its center for about 24 hours as it makes its way toward Okinawa, fat and monstrous, with closest point of approach forecast for 15 miles north of Kadena Air Base at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Needless to say, expect upgraded Tropical Cyclone Conditions of Readiness as this thing approaches, with a lengthy lockdown that at this point could last from midnight Saturday to 2 p.m. Monday.

Here’s the latest forecast wind timeline from Kadena’s 18th Wing Weather Flight:

Sustained 40-mph winds – 6 a.m. Saturday.
Sustained 58-mph winds – midnight Saturday.
Maximum 144-mph winds and 178-mph gusts, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Winds diminishing below 58 mph – 2 p.m. Monday.
Winds diminishing below 40 mph – 7 p.m. Monday.
Winds diminishing below 35 mph – 9 p.m. Monday.

I can’t emphasize enough: This one is a bad one. Okinawa could potentially take a pounding as bad as it’s seen since Typhoon Bart in 1999, whose winds were equal to those forecast by Kadena’s weather flight this time.

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
With such a potent threat inbound, Brig. Gen. Matt Molloy, 18th Wing commander, stressed that it's paramount for the island's inhabitants to properly prepare before the storm hits.

"This is the most powerful typhoon forecast to hit the island in 13 years," the commander said. "I can't stress enough how dangerous Typhoon Bolaven is.

"This is not just another typhoon," the general said. "If we all follow the typhoon procedures and take care of each other, we will all make it safe through this typhoon. God bless and stay safe!"

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
Kadena Air Base is the hub of airpower in the Pacific, and home to the Air Force's largest combat wing -- the 18th Wing -- and a variety of associate units. Together they form "Team Kadena" -- a world-class combat team ready to fight and win from the Keystone of the Pacific.

Nearly 18,000 Americans and more than 4,000 Japanese employees and contractors make up Team Kadena.

And the Typhoon is heading straight for the base.
Prayers being sent!

Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Japan, Typhoons Tembin and Bolaven Warnings
Natural Disasters
East Asia & Pacific > Japan
8/23/2012

The Embassy alerts U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Japan that the Kadena Weather Authority and the Japan Meteorological Agency are tracking Typhoons Tembin and Bolaven across the Western Pacific. At this time, Tembin is expected to approach close to Ishigaki, Miyako and Yonaguni Island, and Bolaven is expected to head directly for mainland Okinawa. However, there is always a possibility that the typhoons will change course. Heavy rain and strong winds can be expected across the entire island.

We will continue to monitor Typhoon Tembin and Bolaven's track. Please monitor the storms' projected paths by consulting media sources and the following websites:

Yea, I know. I lived on Guam in the 90's. Typhoon Omar was the worst one I lived through. And you are correct, the houses are concrete bunkers on those islands because they have nowhere to evacuate to. Just stock up, board up, hunker down and mop up afterwards.

Idiots will get hurt with flying debris...and hopefully no one will get killed.

Re: Typhoon Bolaven- Hits Okinawa!
(AP) – 3 hours ago

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful typhoon packing winds up to 215 kilometers (134 miles) per hour was lumbering toward Okinawa on Saturday and was projected to be the strongest typhoon to hit the southern Japanese island in several years.

Typhoon Bolaven, the 15th typhoon of the season, was expected to reach Okinawa on Sunday, island weather officials said.

It comes on the heels of Typhoon Tembin, which on Friday crossed over southern Taiwan and caused flooding in some areas, but largely spared the island's heavily populated areas. Floodwaters from Tembin reached 3 meters (9 feet) high in one town, where armored vehicles rescued several dozen people from their flooded homes. It returned to sea by late Friday morning.

5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, Japan time: Okinawa entered Tropical Cyclone Conditon of Readiness 1 at 5 p.m. local time.

Looks like Typhoon Bolaven will make its entrance to Okinawa as a severe Category 4-equivalent super typhoon, pretty much what Bart was when it battered the island 13 years ago.

We’re still in Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2; expect upgrade to TCCOR 1 this afternoon, 1-C this evening and 1E early tomorrow morning; that timetable could change depending on Bolaven’s forward speed, which at the moment is 8 mph northwest.

The latest forecast wind timeline from Kadena Air Base’s 18th Wing Weather Flight:

-- Sustained 35-mph winds, 3 p.m. Saturday.
-- Sustained 40-mph winds, 7 p.m. Saturday.
-- Sustained 58-mph winds, 5 a.m. Sunday.
-- Maximum 150-mph winds and 184-mph gusts, 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
-- Winds diminishing below 58 mph, 6 a.m. Monday.
-- Winds diminishing below 40 mph, noon Monday.
-- Winds diminishing below 35 mph, 3 p.m. Monday.
