My aunt in Escondido said the same thing ... haven't felt anything, and the news hasn't reported anything ...

You have to be in constant denial to live there in the first place.

I've lived in So Cal my whole life and have only felt a few very calm earthquakes the entire time. The earthquakes occuring right now are not going to carry very far, when the big one comes, you'll feel it.

No you want feel it very much it will be like being in a baby carriage being rocked gently back and forth. It's what it will do to the earth though that is concerning, those ones are the most dangerous. They destabilize the ground and will cause the ground to more or less break apart right under your feet.

it would depend where you are and how big the quake. northridge for example - you would feel something like that very violently if nearby.

The non-perceptive person can usually only detect earthquakes above 5.5.

Generally this is because people are often in motion/moving.

Re: People from Southern California...
Swarm of earthquakes rattled southern California

The earthquakes are occurring on a northeast striking fault zone located about 6 km north of the northwest end of the mapped Imperial Valley fault. This is within the area called the Brawley Seismic Zone. The BSZ extends from the northern end of the Imperial fault to the southern end of the San Andreas fault. It has been characterized by swarms that have occurred in the 1930s, the 1960s, and 1970s. The last significant swarm before this one occurred in 2005 along the south shore of the Salton Sea, with the largest event of M5.1. In 1981 there was swarm-like activity called the Westmoreland sequence, with a largest event of M 5.8, which occurred 8 km to the northwest of to days activity. Some of the aftershocks of the Mw6.4 1979 earthquake occurred in the same general area.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the southern part of the BSZ was very active. Several swarms included many thousands of events, but with a largest magnitude of only M5.0 or less. From 1981 to 2000, the Brawley Seismic Zone was quiet. In the last decade several swarms smaller than today’s were recorded in the northern part of the zone.

OR ... this happens once every 40 years or so?

How soon after the 1930 and 1970 swarms did a big one occur?

Someone I know who lives north of San Diego said they felt something when the 5.5 hit. The faultlines are different in CA as they are in small pieces so a very small area will feel the quaking. It will not be like the Virginia quake when most of the eastern seaboard felt that one.

And exactly how close to the 'epicenter' would that have to be?

Re: People from Southern California...
USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said earthquake swarms are characteristic of the region, known as the Brawley Seismic Zone.

"The area sees lots of events at once, with many close to the largest magnitude, rather than one main shock with several much smaller aftershocks," Jones said.

Re: People from Southern California...
I have asked this before and no one either knows how to answer it or won't. Here goes again...if they lowered the richter scale measurement by one magnitude a decade ago (this has been verified), then does that mean that what they are showing as a 5.4 now would have been a 6.4 10 years ago?

Also, there are rumors that they lowered the magnitude standard yet another step after last years Japanese EQ but I cannot verify this. If it is true, then the standard has been lowered by two steps in the past 10 years.

If that is the case, would the 5.4 you had today in SoCal have actually been a 7.4 ten years ago by the original standard of eq measurments? Seems logical to me but I wonder, OP, did the earthquake feel stronger to you than what they are reporting?

Not sure why they would keep lowering the measurments by one magnitude unless they know we are about to see an obvious increase in the eq's intensities and don't want to cause a panic by showing the actual magnitude of these monsters. Does anyone know if they did, in fact, lower the richter scale after last years Japan eq?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22157434

no. absolutely not. don't know where you are hearing that but a 5 is a 5 - today, and 10 and 20 years ago also.

would depend on the magnitude and the depth. but you can certainly "detect" quakes much less than mag 5.5

Ok, it seems to me that it has stopped...

Funny thing is that he had 2 EQ 5+ in Chile, one 5+ in Indonesia, one 4+ in Turkey, two 4+ in Nicaragua and some are still undergoing in Alaska... This makes me wonder if the pressure which had been released in CA has now been transfered to the other locations, decentralizing again?
