Here goes again...if they lowered the richter scale measurement by one magnitude a decade ago (this has been verified), then does that mean that what they are showing as a 5.4 now would have been a 6.4 10 years ago? Also, there are rumors that they lowered the magnitude standard yet another step after last years Japanese EQ but I cannot verify this. If it is true, then the standard has been lowered by two steps in the past 10 years. If that is the case, would the 5.4 you had today in SoCal have actually been a 7.4 ten years ago by the original standard of eq measurments? Seems logical to me but I wonder, OP, did the earthquake feel stronger to you than what they are reporting? Not sure why they would keep lowering the measurments by one magnitude unless they know we are about to see an obvious increase in the eq's intensities and don't want to cause a panic by showing the actual magnitude of these monsters. Does anyone know if they did, in fact, lower the richter scale after last years Japan eq? |
