Seriously, depending upon the state (Texas is fairly prime due to the high use of power for AC in the summertime plus the near constant sun.) you can make back the cost of the system from the power company within 5-7 years, including maintenance costs, mind you. Unless you're on some acreage out far from the grid, there's no reason to not wire back into the grid. In her circumstance I'd go off entirely. If you have the money and have been done wrong get off the grid. I'm guessing the op doesn't use tons of power and isn't a fan of her power company. For relativity cheap in the long run she can just op out and say fuck them.
