Exactly. I remember this happening a few years ago. I can't remember the name of the storm or even what year it was. What I do remember is that it was never raised to a hurricane, it came on shore and the damage was = to a high cat 1 cane. The only thing I could come up with reasoning wise was the insurance situation at the time. Hurricane insurance was only covering hurricanes and not tropical storms.

Not sure what the standard is now.

Well, of course the pressure is low for a tropical storm. But it really isn't all that surprising.

Isaac is a huge storm.

It takes a while for such large systems, when strengthening, for the wind speeds to catch up to the pressure.


The inner core of Issac hasn't seen a large wind increase, because the energy it is consuming is having to sustain a massive wind field. If Issac was smaller and more compact, it would easily be a hurricane by now.

Let us not forget how much less of a swampland "buffer" Louisiana has to mitigate the storm surge impact.

Major factors:

* Ongoing subsidence

* Levees have reduced outflow of silt

* Intrusion of saltwater has killed off swamp vegetation

Used to be, both barrier islands and massive square mile upon mile of swampland acted to 'suck up' storm surge like a giant sponge.

Not any more.

Google Launches Hurricane Isaac Site

"Google Crisis Response, one of Google's thousands of active projects that merges various Google tools like Maps, Docs, Forms and Earth, posted a new webpage on Monday dedicated to Tropical Storm Isaac — soon to be Hurricane Isaac — in an effort to disseminate helpful information about the hurricane's path, its forecasted track, and how local residents can stay safe during this emergency situation. Google's Crisis Map for Hurricane Isaac allows the user to set up and see public alerts from weather.gov, flood gauge forecasts, surge zones, evacuation zones and routes, barrier resources and relevant YouTube videos for each impacted area."
