How about you turn off the engine. I'm sure it can be done.

Turn off your engine? Bad idea, no steering and the wheel will lock. It may stop accelerating but you still have momentum that you need to control.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19055812

Wrong. No POWER steering, maybe, and you don't turn the key to "lock"- only to "off".

well when you are trying to control a vehicle at those speeds i dont blame her a bit for a panic attack.

she did well to handle the situation..neutral seems the best to do at that speed

All of you who are criticizing her for not turning the car off lack reading comprehension,
It had an AUTOMATIC ignition that could be started REMOTELY,
obviously this system jammed in some way,
and frankly the woman deserves KUDOS for keeping it as together as she did during what must have been a very terrifying moment.

Watch the video of the scene in action,
if you could possibly feel that she did this on PURPOSE, to gain attention from a Lover (?!)

Also, her Guardian Angels were working overtime on this...

So the engine was locked on? She couldn't switch it off? Just because it doesn't use a key doesn't mean there is not an off switch.

But that's not all. The throtal was also stuck open, and the gearbox was stuck in drive.

3 faults at the same time. All 3 also just happened to fix themselves after the car was stopped? That Bullshit.

Have none of you guys heard of this before?? This is a big fucking deal. These cars computer systems fuck up and take off with the driver. It is why I will never, ever buy a newer car. Will stick to the older models, thanks.

[link to www.mnn.com]

They tried to blame it on floor mats, then admitted it was a problem with the vehicle itself. Will have to search some more but I definitely remember it being the COMPUTER SYSTEMS when I originally read about this years ago.

This is fucking terrifying. Imagine all the accidents that have been unknowingly caused by this. Really fucking scary. A lot of people have already lost their lives to this. People who had called the police saying they couldn't stop or turn down the vehicle, then died shortly after.

And for people trying to say "Do this, do that, blah blah" She was on the phone with the fucking police. I'm sure she tried everything. The vehicles go completely unresponsive. it is the computer systems, not a part, like they tried to say.

Or shifting the car into neutral. So many women dont know this..

I did that once in BMW..HOLY HELL!!!!! It scared the shit out of me and everyone else in traffic.
I just pressed harder hoping to stop and it accelerated like a dragster on nitro at the strip!!
I slapped the shifter into neutral and realized what was up THANK GOD!

To my knowledge, only alzheimers and morons have this problem. Why didn't you lift your fucking; foot off the accelerator, since obviously you were standing on it?
Every time some old lady runs over someone in a parking lot, and while they are trying to get her cadillac off the victim, she says "I was standing on the brake pedal, but the wheels just kept spinning". Well fucking duhhhh.

Re: Woman covers 59 Miles in 35 Minutes with a stuck accelerator
I had a little Fiat 10 years back.

The accelerator stuck on twice. First time we were driving at 30mph and I had no clue why it was happening when the revs started to redline.

What did I do without even thinking? Put the clutch down and coasted to the side of the road then shut the engine off. Restarted and all was good.

We were holidaying at the time, had no proper tools, and I had no cover and little money, so didn't take it in.

A few days later it happened again, this time sat idleing in neutral in a car park. Got a few weird looks before I turned it off :)

When I got home and had a look, I found that the throttle cable was snagging on an improperly replaced air filter cover!

Dumb SOB's!

all these "problems" with cars are really problems with retarded drivers.

the firestone tires blowing on ford exploders?
retards over correcting and causeing a rollover, even with REAR tires popping. lol retards!

the toyotas running out of control WOT(wide open throttle)?
retards not knowing how to operate thier cars, one was even a COP. shifting into NUETRAL ALWAYS WORKS. the prius with a remote key FOB i believe can also be shut off by pressing and holding the start button, but FFS you'd have to have a brian and read the owners manual to know that!! retards!

this lady is FULL of CRAP. she did everything wrong and she should be dead now but if not that then at least throw the book at her, charge her with every possible offense, every fine, and jail time. she is a fat ugly retard!

Did you read how she stopped the car?

The highway patrol had to tell her over her damn cell phone:

"Lift up the accelerator and push on the brake"

"And so I did that, and it slammed me from 119 mph to like nothing," she said

They inspected the car immediately after and found nothing wrong with the controls.

Did they inspect her too?

I don't think she was cool headed, she was spazzing out.
She shouldn't be applauded for avoiding a major highway disaster.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Iowa woman whose accelerator got stuck as she drove up Interstate 35 in Missouri managed to control the vehicle even as speeds topped 110 mph and she was forced to the median several times to avoid other drivers, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said....

Osceola she was told to lift up the accelerator and push on the brake.

Heard also that the car was inspected immediately afterward and nothing unusual was found.

35 minutes is an awful long time to panic and have the presence of mind to call 911 but not try the maneuver that the highway patrol eventually suggested (lift the accelerator and press on the brake)

I was test driving a used car.. out on the road, drove it through town and on my way back to the dealership, the brakes stopped working.

I was coming up to a stop light at 25 mph, when I realized I had no brakes...I was pumping the pedal, nothing changed - and at this point I was rolling right into the rear-end of a State Police car with 2 troopers in it.

BAM!!

They both jumped out with guns drawn.. lol...

I told them about the brakes, they were pissed, they towed the car away, drove me back to my car and ripped the dealership a new one.

I didn't buy from that dealership.

Im serious that a emergency driving course should be required of everyone

How to check proper inflation of tires to prevent tire failure. How to check battery connections for corrosion so you arent stuck in the road.

How to make it to a exit ramp if possible instead of parking off to the side of a busy interstate so someone gets hit.

How to drive defensively. How to shift to neutral, etc..

Ok I understand a stuck accelerator last year in my toyota my floor mat was caught on my accelerator I was on a back country road, I could feel the mat was stuck and there was nothing I could do. So as the car was increasing in speed I hit the breaks and the emergency brake at the same time. My car stopped no harm done and later that week I got a recall letter from Toyota, although I am not sure what the issue was with her car it seems she was too busy on the phone to use critical thinking skills.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22689084

Good reflex. I've had the situation happen once also. It was a little basketball rolling around the floor that wedged between the pedal and the wall.

I lifted the pedal and popped with one foot and popped it out with the other. Took two seconds.

I just can't imagine going duhr for 35 minutes a 110 mph.

Usually adrenaline will kick in your thinking and reaction skills.
She used them to call 911 instead.

I've turned off the car while traveling just to see how it would respond. Steering gets stiff but manageable, brakes get soft but still work.
I was able to handle it well enough to pull over and stop just as if normal.

Another time I had the joy of dropping the front end of the drive shaft while going 70mph in the inside lane of a four.
Through a deafening roar of noise and unsure of what specifically just happened, my response was instant and took less than ten seconds beginning to end.
Foot off the accelerator.
Neutral.
Hit flashers.
Eased to the right through all other lanes and coasted to a safe position off to the side of the road
applied brakes.
Made a call for a flatbed tow truck.
Called for a ride.
Never even slowed traffic.
Home an hour later with a smile.
