If you floor the gas and brake at the same time....

your car will stop.

When they are working properly, brakes always win.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 212949

My front brakes were winning and my rear brakes were loosing..
Front "disk"... rear "drum" and it was a rear drive so ..hence..the fishtailing..

next......

Re: Woman covers 59 Miles in 35 Minutes with a stuck accelerator
The dispatcher asked her if she could put the shifter into neutral and the driver said it wouldn't move. Now in my experience I have yet to see any car or truck sold in the States that WOULDN'T freely go between drive and neutral without even having to pull a column lever or press a button.

Automatic drivers test this for me. Sitting in your driveway in drive just push forward on your shifter and it should go straight to neutral. Pull back and it should go straight to drive, no buttons needed.

Even if it meant 1000s of dollars of damage, she should have slammed it into park with all her might.

The problem here is that an IQ test should be passed to get a license to drive. She probably couldn't pass an IQ test. AND she was probably talking on the phone the whole way.

Lift off the accelerator and press the brake? lol

Or shifting the car into neutral. So many women dont know this..

Its been discovered how many people mistake the brake for the accelerator, Im dead serious. Its been documented.

I did that once in BMW..HOLY HELL!!!!! It scared the shit out of me and everyone else in traffic.
I just pressed harder hoping to stop and it accelerated like a dragster on nitro at the strip!!
I slapped the shifter into neutral and realized what was up THANK GOD!

My throttle cable snapped once. I had no idea my minivan could do 110, but found out quick. Put it in neutral and the engine screamed more, then turned it off and coasted to a stop. I was two miles from home and couldnt afford a tow. So i started it back up, droppedit into drive, peeled out and held on for dear life. Last quarter mile was a dirt road, that was interesting. Do not try this at home!

Awww, Apollo we're not ALL like that. There are a few of us women that have common sense. I've known since I was a teenager and learned to drive, that you throw it in neutral and shut it OFF if you can't stop. I started learning about cars a little from my dad, and then my first serious boyfriend. Now a little over two decades later (cough) I can troubleshoot with the best of them. lol

I think ALL boys and girls should be taught basic car repair (how to check and change oil/tranny fluid, check for leaks, jump a battery, change an alternator etc.) The schools are busy brainwashing them with useless information, instead of educating them with knowledge for real-life scenarios.

I have honestly had female friends in the past that do not know how to do ANYTHING but put GAS in a car. I am just at a loss for words with that. Of course, I can't say that I haven't known men like that, either. They take a car to the shop for everything.... because they have no clue, and don't want to get their hands dirty.

Re: Woman covers 59 Miles in 35 Minutes with a stuck accelerator
i had a 3.8L chevy Lumina, driving 40.
Needed to brake for a bus and bam, no brakes!! ABS flashing

Accellerator stuck is scary but let me tell you, no brakes is true terror.

I just bought it that day, always used stickshift and not used to the parkingbrake on the fucking left that you have to be an acrobat to kick down when you are 1.95m.

No time, all i could do is hold the steering wheel with both hands, joked to my buddy; this is it, no brakes, brace for impact. Moved to the right of the bus at the last moment, only to find a concrete block for a lightingpole.

totalled the car, half the bus ripped open but no injuries.

Later i heard; if the ABS fails you are a dead duck, all brakes are gone. even you use parking brake or shift to neutral this is not going to slow you down significantly. Just gently hit the least lethal object to stay alive.

I will never buy a chevy again.

Shhesh, the more computer crap they cram into these new cars the worse they'll get. Just wait till it sprouts legs and runs out of your driveway without you in it.

Ok I understand a stuck accelerator last year in my toyota my floor mat was caught on my accelerator I was on a back country road, I could feel the mat was stuck and there was nothing I could do. So as the car was increasing in speed I hit the breaks and the emergency brake at the same time. My car stopped no harm done and later that week I got a recall letter from Toyota, although I am not sure what the issue was with her car it seems she was too busy on the phone to use critical thinking skills.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22689084

Good reflex. I've had the situation happen once also. It was a little basketball rolling around the floor that wedged between the pedal and the wall.

I lifted the pedal and popped with one foot and popped it out with the other. Took two seconds.

I just can't imagine going duhr for 35 minutes a 110 mph.

Usually adrenaline will kick in your thinking and reaction skills.
She used them to call 911 instead.

This is true. You have to turn it to "off", but not to "lock". The brakes will retain power for the first application and then they still will work enough to stop you after that. You just have to push harder.

Wrong. No POWER steering, maybe, and you don't turn the key to "lock"- only to "off".
