So when will Russia cut the cord on the International Space Station as they did with Mir. Along with USA's Billion plus Dollar investment. 13 years in orbit on an original 15 year tour. Russia could cut the cord whenever. They say 2020 but the Russians are in control of its fate and any USA funding cuts could cut the cord asap. A controlled reentry sounds complicated and expensive. We need to start thinking about this. I am assuming the damage caused by an uncontrolled reentry of the ISS were it to hit a populated area would be that of a small nuclear explosion about the size of Hiroshima. Not world changing unless you live at ground Zero. This is not likely to happen but just something to consider.

The space station is mostly empty space, it would break apart and burn up in the atmosphere.

There would be no explosion, perhaps some debree would hit the earth though - if it hit an urban area there would be some chaos and perhaps deaths but no nuclear explosion type event.

just a take on that Space.com's Leonard David laid out the plan for the International Space Station's eventual disposal in this article last year. Russia's Progress cargo ships would have to be modified in order to push the space station on a course to come down in the Pacific (or give the station an orbital boost in case more time is needed to execute the de-crewing and deorbiting plan). A contingency plan for deorbiting the space station has to be ready well before 2020, just in case a catastrophic event requires the abandonment and safe disposal of the football-field-sized complex. I'm not sold that they would go to all that trouble

Well, I went with 300 feet by 300 feet for the size. Then I assumed it'd destroy 1000 times that much area around where it lands. Then I calculated the surface of the Earth in square feet. Then I divided to get the chance that it'd kill me: 1 in 62,280,943. So, can't say I'm gonna get TOO worried. Heh.

so your figures based on facts of equation make it one in nine could be effected overall. Don't get me wrong its nothing in terms of world events but there could be a slight inconvenience. I know its a joke to everyone but i am just saying a football sized object in an uncontrolled free fall from space could be a mild inconvenience .
