My job can be a first responder at times(ER Nurse). With Katrina, I gave up vacation time and went under the umbrella of the Red Cross to assist. (Red Cross is also under the umbrella of the US Gov. and does require training and certification) My employer also agreed to sponser several employees, including me four several weeks.
Reading these posts, it does take me back. I am not sure, that I would give up my vacation time, if ya'll were in the same disaster. Let FEMA help you and your buds and those not tainted reading posts like these.

Simple, vote republican because they want to cut this type of aid. I've been a 3rd party voter for many years. Not this time, I kind of blame myself for not voting rep all along.
