ISAAC Watch Tues 8-28 -- Already SIX (6 !!!) FOOT STORM SURGE Near NOLA and Rising Rapidly
Before dawn here in central US time zone it is hard to get much of a accurate read on Isaac before the early morning satellite and hurricane hunter images come in with first light.

But here:

[link to tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov]

is our most sensitive 'on the ground' predictive tool, the 'normal' or 'predicted' (for normal conditions) tide reading, versus the 'observed' or real life tide elevation.

Shell Beach is just east, and very slightly south of New Orleans.

Before Katrina in 2005, there was actually a state-maintained road to Shell Beach, a real beach (!) and some habitation there.

Katrina destroyed it, and now about all that remains are some meteorlogical observation tools left there just for events like Isaac.

So now, as I look at the difference between the predicted and the observed tidal readings, the real reading is FIVE FEET higher than normal.

This means a 5 ft storm surge is already approaching NOLA.

And the day is yet to dawn, about 24 hours ahead of predicted land fall.

Update - Within the few hours since I first posted this, it has risen to 6 foot storm surge at Shell Beach.

CNN just predicted 6 to 12 foot storm surge for SE Louisiana and Alabama coasts.

Isaac is still "just" a tropical storm.

But this is about the water, not the winds.

NOLA has not been evacuated. The mayor believes the new 10 billion dollare storm surge walls will effectively protect the city.

There is a lot less swampland protecting NOLA today than there was during Katrina.

Here is a simplistic diagram of what has been going on:

This is an article with complex diagrams of the roughly 10 billion dollar new storm surge protection levee system that New Orleans has built since Katrina:

Of course there are some, as any satellite map of SE Louisiana will show.

But, they are:

Smaller in overall size

Damaged by saltwater intrusion (swamp plants don't grow well)

Shallower

Per CNN update:

Overall storm system has slowed to 7 miles per hour in its northwesterly movement.

That means it sits longer in the Gulf soaking up moisture.

Also that it will sit longer over Louisiana dumping out rain.

New Orleans "new" beefed up pumping system can pump out 1" of rainfall the first hour. After the first hour, it can only pump out 1/2" (one half inch) per hour.

N O is expected to recieve well over 10" of rain.

Some of that rain will be at the rate of 4" per hour.

New storm surge prevention levee system is "expected" to hold.

Pilottown at the mouth of the "crow's foot" peninsula of the Mississippi River now likewise shows 6 foot storm surge.

In other words, the eastern side of Plaquemine Parrish which was under mandatory evacuation yesterday... is now underwater.

To understand this, look at a map of SE Louisiana. Of that peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of Mexcio... The eastern half of it, that part that is east of the Mississippi, is underwater, barring -- perhaps -- a few high points of contrived artificial levee or other manmade structure. The land itself is underwater.

This one is not the winds, but the water.

That is how it is with all hurricanes/ tropical storms.

But this more than ever. People will lose interes, pay no attention, fail to evacuate -- and drown or die of injury and disease, cut off -- because it currently lacks a few knots per hour of wind and remains "just" a tropical storm.

Katrina was so horrific because people were not prepared for a hurricane.

Isaac will be horrific because it isn't even an official hurricane.

This is what Katrina did...it slowed and just sat there gaining power before it hit.

Also...Katrina was 7 years ago on August 29th!

Tomorrow it will be 7 years to the day!

With parts of the TS dumping 4 inches of rain an hour and the storm at a speed of 7 mph will cause a disaster for sure.

CNN going with the more or less upbeat theme "People here (New Orleans) trust the levees".

But they are giving Isaac the same sort of lead story time and exposure as they would a major hurricane.

Some place called East Bank 1, Norco, B. LaBranche, LA now shows 7 foot storm surge.

I'll try to go look up where that is.

Or was.

Oh dear.

When I inputted "La Branche Louisiana" into Google satellite maps, it gave me

Norco LaBranche, LA

Which matched the name of the buoy indicating 7 foot storm surge.

It is right on I-10, on a swamp off of Lake Ponchatrain at Kenner LA, immediately west of New Orleans.

Can this be right????
