CNN are expecting a 4 metre storm surge. The levees are designed to pump 25 mm of water per hour and the amount of rain that has been falling is 75 mm per hour.

I saw an interview with the guy in charge of the levees.

He seemed confident and I believed what he said re: that

There will be plenty of damage but probably nothing like Katrina.

Yep, my family had to evacuate off of Grand Isle on Monday morning so thank God they weren't on the island.

CNN just said the storm surge at high tide could be 20ft.

I think they just said it's at 11 ft at low tide.

they also emphasized the storm will last 24 hrs. at least

The latest update puts the track of Hurricane Isaac right over Assumption Parish. The update based on the National Hurricane Center’s forecast advises us that by 6:00 a.m., we should be experiencing tropical storm force winds. At noon, the forecast shows that we should experience the strongest winds (hurricane force) as it is projected for the EYE WALL to be over us. Winds are expected to be sustained at 70 mph with possible gusts from 90-100 mph near the eye wall. These winds are expected to endure until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night. Expected rainfall is 7”.

Please heed the curfew that will go into effect at midnight. This curfew will remain in effect until further notice. We urge all residents to shelter in place. This is a daytime event which will last throughout the day on Wednesday. We shall experience the strongest winds and rain from Noon until 9 p.m. Please note that emergency response vehicles such as Acadian, Fire Depts, etc. will NOT respond once winds are sustained at 50 mph.

If any additional information is needed, please contact the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at 985-369-7386.

The mandatory evacuation has been called because it is anticipated that there will be a time frame where emergency services (ambulance, fire, etc…) will not be able to respond to calls in the parish because of high winds.

The emergency responders in our area follow a protocol as to the weather conditions they can respond in (less than 50 mph winds).

We have received inquiries regarding the local nursing home… Please note that Heritage Manor Nursing Home residents have not been evacuated and are sheltering in place. The facility is staffed accordingly throughout the impending storm.

Due to storm conditions and the uncertainty regarding its aftermath, it has been decided to postpone the distribution of evacuee assistance checks that had been originally scheduled for Thursday, August 30.

The intent of Texas Brine is to reschedule the distribution to Friday, August 31, but a venue has not yet been confirmed. Once confirmed, a notification will be sent to the media and other Assumption Parish officials and information sites.

A mandatory evacuation of all of Assumption Parish has been issued. Assumption Parish is expecting sustained winds of 50 – 70 mph with gusts at 85 mph. Tropical storm force winds are expected by 6 a.m. on Wednesday and are expected to endure until 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Normal conditions are expected by 7 a.m. on Thursday morning.

110mph gust in Myrtle Grove, LA, Plaquemine Parish per Fox 8 New Orleans.

National Hurricane Center has finally seceeded, Isaac is stalled. [link to www.fox8live.com] according to meteorologists here, this storm isn't going to move any time soon because it is blocked by a strong high that is draped across the US.

You don't want it to sit in once place over warm water and churn. That warm water is feeding the beast!

It will just rain and rain and rain...slowly weakening. Possibly move at some point, and then strengthen back up again.

Hypercanes require a minimum ocean temperature of 48 degrees celcius..warmer than any ocean has ever been by about 15 degrees so a hypercane just ain't possible.
If it stalls for long enough it will actually cause upwelling..

But it also has the devastating affect of prolonged heavy rain fall and severe flooding....not a nice scenario !

Isaac has a mind of it's own. At this point I'm starting to think anything is possible.
