Yes it is and is being played down..The scary thing is this can be weaponized..

If a rat were to crawl in your sleeping bag, leaving it's disgusting trail of urine, feces, what-have-you, and the leave; then you were to climb in, sleep in it, then bam, you've got it.
The dust can have it, so if you don't wash your hands frequently and are digging around in wood piles, etc., bam, you have it.

Rats and mice are everywhere; this virus is everywhere in the desert. Something about the compatibility of our DNA and mice DNA allow for transmitting of the disease. This is mother nature trying to get our population down.

The biggest threat isn't the government, it's the unstable nature of Nature.

HPS in the United States

Through December 31, 2011, a total of 587 cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome have been reported in the United States. Of these, 556 cases occurred from 1993-onward, following the initial identification of HPS, whereas 31 cases were retrospectively identified. Thirty-six percent of all reported cases have resulted in death.

Of persons ill with HPS, 63% have been male, 37% female.

The mean age of confirmed case patients is 37 years (range: 6 to 83 years).

HPS can strike anyone; however, Whites currently account for 78% of all cases. American Indians account for about 18% of cases, African Americans for 2% of cases, and Asians for 1% of cases. About 20% of HPS cases have been reported among Hispanics (ethnicity considered separately from race).

Cases have been reported in 34 states. Over half of the confirmed cases have been reported from areas outside the Four Corners area.

About three-quarters of patients with HPS have been residents of rural areas.

Yosemite rangers in triage mode after hantavirus outbreak

The park has received thousands of calls since six cases of the rodent-borne disease were traced to Yosemite. Officials are answering questions and sending letters to those who may have been infected.

But now, Power says her nephew has flu-like symptoms — which can be the initial indicators of hantavirus. His doctor is monitoring him in case he takes a turn for the worse.

Power said they weren't told about hantavirus upon checking in Aug. 23 and haven't been contacted by the park since. Although they didn't stay in the signature tent cabins, she said she'd still like first-hand information.

"I know they don't want to start a panic," she said. "But I've got an 11-year-old nephew I'm really worried about."


But others kept their plans to visit Yosemite this week, both at Curry Village and beyond. The lobby of the Yosemite Lodge had a steady trickle of guests waiting to check in Friday evening.

One man standing in line eyed a flier sitting on the front desk. "HANTAVIRUS CAUTION," it read.
